1969 Camaro Z28, vintage racing inspired

I started this project a wile ago. And have made som progress. I had decided on a Pro touring look with ‘19 BBS.. but did not wan to continue for some reason.. was surfing the net and just figured it needed mini lite wheels. Found some decent ones in Sweden but not staggered. Was also looking at scaleproduction which have a nice set but they are in Germany.. but it got me thinking.

Found a set of RS watanabes on a Swedish site and thought that they would work. And then I remembered  that I had a set in the PB.
Problem is they are 4 Bolt and maybe to wide. The C5R Silverado won’t be using its corvette wheels so the wheel nuts will not be used. And thanks to my old stash I had an second set. So.. centrum bolt is the solution! I Made the front as you can se with the shaft going through and the nut retaining it. The rears had an different problem since the rims had a 3mm centrum bore in stead of the 2mm needed. So I put the corvette part in my dremel and turned it down in size and made it conical so it would fit. Problem is almost solved. Now I just need to remove the original screws and fil their holes and repeat on the other two wheels.

I believe the wheels come from a AE86 from aoshima.

I believe it looks decent for a test fit. But i will need to work on the fitment on both corners. They need to come inwards to the body some. Might need to alter the front backing plate/upright.

first time trying these techniques. Worked ok but second set will be better 😉

The stock Z28 engine will see some minor upgrades I guess.

comments and thoughts are most welcome!

Very creative, the wheels and tires look spot on for a racer.  Look forward to seeing your progress on this

Thanks! Yes I believe so to!

Hi Anton, I like those wheels, good choice for the car. Maybe a touch lower with the stance? Then again, I just like low!! Do you have a body colour yet?

Cheers, Steve

Yes you might be right! I had the stance set up for the other wheels but i think you are right! I have actualy lifted the rear suspension a bit from stock so it would have a bit of forward lean as I like them but I will tweek it I think.

Color vise I am thinking of gold with black stripes or solid gray.. not sure.

Looking pretty good on the build so far Anton.  Looks like Chevy orange for the engine so you going with a traditional body color for the Camaro or custom?

thanks m8! Yes you are right on the color of the motor. As mentioned after your post 🙂 thinking about gold with black or solid grey. A friends Camaro is inspirational: 178525-3973796.jpg

I like your ideas on this , and having owned a '69 Camaro for a total of 18 years in the past I have a great interest in them. I like the slight rack of the stance and I know this is only plastic, but if you were to go any lower you would need to either narrow the track of the tires to fit under the body or flare the wheel wells. Looking at your friends beautiful '68 Camaro, did he add a '69 front lower valance panel ?,  you can see how Chevrolet designed the wheel well openings differently between the '67 & '68 Camaros from the '69 model.

thanks for the encouragement:-) I could not agree more about narrowing the track if I want it lower. I Will need to look for an other set of front tires since one is missing.

Yes he did a custom front valance for it where he blended a ‘69 Camaro section. Some more info on it if you are interested: started from a quite rough point. https://www.garaget.org/?car=178525

Maybe a small piece of sheet plastic cut to size to fill the gap.

Nice Camaro !!! Its gonna turn out being a track beast,  love the aggressive stance and wheel combo .

As far as the grill gap, just a thin strip of plastic along the top to fill,  something like. 015 " aka plastic for sale signs would work there

Thanks guys! Absolutely. Just thought if there was a known problem that had a known fix except for the adding material part, such as “for using the standard grill you need to remove the tab or such” 🙂

I test fitted the non RS grill and I have a huge gap on top of the grill. Any special fixes for this?

I never noticed that before. I always assumed they actually were open there. Guess not.

Excellent work so far, the wheels and brakes look great.

For the gap? I would just add a styrene strip of appropriate thickness to the inside of the opening in the body.

David G.

Thanks! Yes I will do that to fill the gap 🙂

Done some small progress. Managed to get the wheels inboard some with some tweeking, hacking of the front calipers and adjustments to the rear hubs. Still not perfect butt getting there. Removed the lift blocks on the rear to lover it, still need to alter the front.

the cut caliper.

I can't tell for certain, but could you have the grille in upside down? They DO have a top and a bottom. Try flipping it over and see if it fits better.
