Chrysler 300c (low and aggressive)

Hi Steve!

The first set of wheels is my favorite (very contemporary), but... the smoked chrome tint of the second set get me to think of the overall "matteness" the car wil project once completed, and it might enhance the ensemble. Maybe easier said than done? You are the judge.

Just my two cents. It's gonna be great whichever way!

PS: The shrink story is real.

Hey Steve,

Impressed with speed/quality of this conversion! Looking forward to finished product.

My vote for wheels would be #1

Hi Russ, thanks for checking in sir! I appreciate you sharing your choice of wheels.

I like wheel #3 my self. Offered a little contrast to the other colors. The real thin sunken front Bumpers look good to me.

Hello David, thanks for the compliment on the bumpers. I must admit, the wheel choice is not going to be quite as easy as I thought. Final choice will come after the body is in colour. Thanks for your vote!

Hi Claude! I might do this exercise again once body is in paint… As I’ve said before, I ALWAYS appreciate your 2cents sir. I figured the shrink story was real, and also interesting. Designing a car is as much psychological as it is visual. The 300’s had me hook line and sinker, and in my opinion, they have stood the test of time.

Excellent work (again...) Steve!!!  Your 2 door version of the Chrysler 300 is exactly as the real car should have been made.  I really like what you are doing my friend, it is very inspiring and it gives ideas to many modelers including me... 😍

Francis! Ya, I think it looks sweet as a 2dr. Thanks for checking in my friend. I still sneak over and drool on your Dodge. You have set the bar incredibly high.

wheel number 1. bumpers look great, as does the body. Im on the fence with the scoop, but Thats just my personal taste

Hi Chris, thank you for the kind words. I appreciate your honest opinion on the scoop, I figured there would be some that didn’t like it. Hopefully it will grow on you once she’s in paint…

Hi guys,

I had fairly productive day at the bench… by my standards.  A few things I didn’t photograph, added the side view mirrors, got another coat of primer on the body, lots of cleanup on suspension parts, minor mods to get the chassis pan to fit in the body with front and rear bumpers installed, assembled the engine halves. Not exciting, but progress.
The front suspension needed a fair bit of modification. After a mock up and some measurements, I need to lower it by 2.5 scale inches, and narrow each side by 3 scale inches to fit the wider tires.

Before:

removing the “posts” that the front suspension mounts to was exactly the amount it needed to be lowered, so that part was easy..

Then cut apart and shorten. I drilled holes and made small styrene pins for added strength, then re-assembled.

The alligator clips are temporarily holding a styrene strip to make sure everything lines up.

Struts needed to be cut down and moved inward. New receivers for the struts are just styrene rod. The old mounts are ground off.

After the changes, everything fits, and lines up! Yay!

Had a productive paint session too, more on that tomorrow…

I may have to tweak things a bit for mounting the engine due raising the crossmember. However, as there won’t be a top to the engine and only the bottom will be seen, it might be fine. I’ll cross that bridge later…

Thanks for looking.

Cheers, Steve

Another update.

I have most of the chassis painted, and a majority of it assembled. The heat shields were treated to 6-8 coats of smoke. The only “chrome” on this build will be the side view mirrors. Headlight and taillights were also treated to multiple coats of smoke. (No photos yet) I had to re-stock my smoke supply today!!

The body work is really close now. Side view mirrors are installed. The plan is for side exit exhaust in the rocker panel, after that it will be a final sand, one more coat of primer and paint.

Hi Atin, I appreciate the kind words, thanks for having a look. With all the talent in this forum I often think I might bore people to tears with my threads. I try to keep it somewhat interesting, hopefully I can pass on a tip or trick that is new to someone.

Quick update,

Had a very enjoyable, productive afternoon at the desk. I have everything in paint now except the license plate frame, I realized as I sat down just now that I forgot to paint that.
Holes made for the NASCAR style exhaust in the rocker panel. This one won’t have my usual polished aluminum exhaust tips. Just ignore that nasty dust bunny on the rear quarter panel, it’s gone now.

body is painted. first a few coats of Tamiya TS100 semi gloss gunmetal

followed with a light coat of smoke, partly for a darker shade, partly for a bit of depth.

last and most important, a medium coat of flat clear

The colour is a bit less shiny than it looks in the photo. I am REALLY pleased with how it turned out, it is exactly the look I wanted.
If all goes well, I should finish this one up by the end of the weekend.
Thanks for lookin, more soon!

Only just seen this one, great progress Steve! The 2-door conversion has worked out very well, excellent colour choice too.

I never have very good experience of spraying Smoke straight from the can, but you've used it to fantastic effect.

The roofline is quite unusual for a modern car in having a pronounced change of angle where the front and rear pillars meet the roof. Wonder what it would look like if they were given more of a rake? Perhaps just the back end, to give it more of a coupe look? I suppose that could be done in conjunction with a roof chop. Certainly not something I'd attempt, my imagination is way ahead of my skill level there.......

Your arrangement reminds me of the side rear window and pillar design on this 2-door Ford Granada:

Paint looks epic! I think you would like the Gun metal TS38, looks almost as your dark gray, can be seen at my Supra in the canonball run. That exhaust cut out turned out great and will look epic when done!

Hello Anton, I’m going to get some of the TS38. The exhaust looks slick, I did a test fit yesterday. Thanks for the PM too!

Hi David! Thanks for the comment, the paint turned out EXACTLY as I wanted, that doesn’t always happen….

Hello Nigel! Thanks for checking in. I think it looks great as a 2dr, I still might do a shortened 2dr hardtop with a slight chop in the future. That Granada has very similar roof lines, thanks for sharing. My early experience with smoke was a little hit and miss, (more miss) but I’m learning some techniques that help. The two main things I’ve learned is: keep the coats light, heavy coats don’t work, and make sure the paint is warm. I’ve been having fun with the smoke.

Cheers, Steve

Great looking body and paint work. I like the side exhaust idea and maybe some black pipes showing. We used to have a '10 Dodge Charger RT with AWD and the color was almost the same as your builds.

Hi David, Yep… the exhaust is painted and the black tips just peek out the holes, it looks pretty sharp. Photos soon!

Really coming along nicely!

I love the heat shield work.

Thank you Dennis. It was interesting that most of the Chrome in this kit goes UNDER the car. Lots of smoke on this one… I did however install the only actual chrome that will be seen which is the side view mirrors.
