CabDriver Posted October 2, 2021 Share Posted October 2, 2021 I picked up this AMT Plymouth Fury slammer a while back and hadn't really figured out what to do with it until recently…but I don’t have a salt flats build in my collection yet and I’d like one, so here goes! First up, figuring out a replacement for those wheels… Found these in the parts box - not the style I wanted, but with some Moon disks they’ll work just fine… Next up, needed some tires. I spent a while trying to find something suitable that I liked, and in the end I decided to turn down some of those awful blocky Revell tires that they used to put in about every road car kit, and turn them into something more useful. A little machining later…(with an un-modified kit tire in the background for reference): Next up, cut some vinyl to mask them for lettering: Shot some Createx white: Now we’re talking! And with the wheels and scratchbuilt Moon disks: That’ll work! I did some research on the rule book for Speed Week - seems like this car would fit right into the Classic Gas Coupe class, which doesn’t allow body modifications but DOES allow a blower. In addition, you’re allowed to blank off the front grille, so I made some ‘aluminum’ panels to reduce drag up front there somewhat: Time for a mock-up to see how it looks so far: I like it! I’m going to be going for a patina’d pajntjob on this one, with some fancy vintage-looking lettering, so laying down some rust will be the next job…more soon! 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

A little more progress this afternoon - laying down a rusty bare-metal base for the rest of the paintjob to follow… First up, Model Master aluminum and some shading with Vallejo gunmetal: Then, adding some rust…first up, burnt umber: Followed by some ‘fresh’ rust highlights: And then some Vallejo rust wash to add some streaks and light surface rust: Tomorrow’s project will be laying down some body color over all that corrosion…more soon! You may leave it in bare metal (2 gallons of paint add weight, you know!). Besides, it looks fantastic as is, with the light rust streaks. Just my two cents, FWIW... Just cut a stencil out of Oracal masking vinyl on my cutter - but I know people sell these online too A little paintwork today… First some (a lot) of salt: Then red: Once the red dried I shot some highlights in a pink color to lighten it up to look kinda chalky and faded like how red paint often looks. Then, after shooting the white bits, shot the shadows for some lettering on the doors: Before re-masking to shoot some gold before adding some numbers and sponsor decals: It’s starting to look like a racecar! I lay out the design in either the Silhouette software or, if it's more complex, Adobe Illustrator, and then have the machine cut Oracal masking vinyl to the right size to make the masks. Horsepower and weight are your friends out there, and you have to rethink the way you adjust suspension to make the car hook. So Jim, can I assume that you just downloaded a pic of the real tire logos and then traced it out in Illustrator and resized to print on your cutter? I never thought about doing this.. my wife has a Cricut.. I'll have to figure out how to make it printable/cuttable on that. I much prefer airbrushing the tires than using decals. Actually, I found a good photo of a 1:1 tire stencil and used that in this case, but either way works… I kinda ran out of pieces to add to this, so it’s getting towards being done here - added a resin parachute, a couple of fuel lines, some photoetch screws and dzus fasteners and then used some thinned white glue and some fine white embossing powder to add a little salt. To make the car hook, we were actually stiffening the left front and right rear to combat the unloading of the right rear tire. We also didnt run a posi/spool because "its not if, its when you spin a roadster" another way we dealt with traction was to ballast the car heavy. some guys even have weight bars in areas of the car to ballast one side or the other.
