The 2022 Cannonball Run Year of Birth Build Thread

For the '61 Ranchero I'm considering some five slot deep dish wheels from the parts box, but one rim is broken, so I'm gonna try to fix it with a parts box ring.

Broken rim is ground off and the ring is prepped.

All four after repair and awaiting paint. Still undecided if these are what I really want to go with but that's where I'm at for now.

May I get in?  If so a question or two.  May I choose the same subject as another builder?  My birth year is 1970 and I am considering a Cyclone but noticed Bill Benson is doing one.  May the car be converted from front engine to mid engine?  Must the wheelbase be stock?  Lastly I need to find out how to upload pics but will look into that on this site.  I recall seeing the information on here.  Thanks guys.- Mark

I got some of the subassemblies and other odds and ends painted. I'm going to need to mock up the suspension to get the wheelbase right.

I cut the body and floor pan down and glued some sheet plastic to the back of the body.

The kit comes with 2 sets of stripe decals, I'm trying to figure out a way to combine the 2 sets to make 1 set for the Centurion.

Mark, yes you may choose to build any kit from the year you were born regardless if someone else is building the same kit. There is no rule against that or any modifications you want to make on the car such as altered wheelbase or engine relocation. So please join if you will, love to see you build with us...

Thank you Wayne, hey I’ve seen other build offs on other sites  Where guys talk and talk about what they’re going to build without actually building. And I don’t want to be that guy! But I’m trying to lock in my build. So here goes...

MPC Californian it’s going to be re-issued this year as far as I know. I have a body that my friend gave me from an original.  I believe the original kit was issued in 1969. And the car is so heavily customized that you really can’t tell what year it is supposed to be. I was just wondering if it’s OK for me to consider this an 1870? If so this will be my choice.  Thank you

I really didn't know much about the kit before it was announced that Round II was working on restoring the tools to re-issue the kit.

I think you are right that it was originally issued in 1969. As I did some research on the history, I learned that It's designed from Harry Bradley's Luxury Sports Car which started out as the 68 Oldsmobile Toronado. There are some slight styling differences between 68 and 70 but since the car is so modified I don't see a problem with you using that kit.

I still haven't committed to what I'm building yet. I've been thinking about it but I'm gonna keep pondering for now...

That is so cool. If R2 does reissue it, I will get one. I love Neo-classic cars. This has a bit of the Neo-classic style. Zimmers and Excalibur’s are cool cars, overpriced and somewhat impractical, but I still like them. 
This will be a cool build.

Mike and Scott,

Thank you for your encouragement and that is exactly what I plan to do with it, recustomize.  Hopefully lose some gaudy aspects and then hot rod it with a Supercar chassis and mega horsepower.  
 

Wayne I have noticed that most of the guys here have posted pictures of the kits and parts they plan to start with.  When relocating to my Mom’s home after a divorce a couple years ago I combined a bunch of my kits into plastic storage bins and no longer have the original boxes.  At least for the ones I decided I was going to build. The few collectible kits that I have as well as ones I’m not sure I will build I have kept in their original boxes.  The Californian is one I started many years ago.  I may or may not have already stated this Olds came from my friend and was only the body and front grill and hood.  Needless to say I didn’t have a box for that one. Where I’m going with all this is I hope it’s OK that the pictures I am attaching I have just gotten off of the Internet because I no longer have the pro stock Oldsmobile or either Mythos boxes.   Also when I say that the project was started, trust me when I say that it is well below the 25% completed limitation.  Basically all I have done is collect the parts. Anyhow here are the main kits I am pulling from.

The tentative plan is the chassis, suspension and interior made from both Monogram and Tamils Mythos parts.  The big block Olds DRCE engine snorting through twin turbos mounted mid ships with some kind of transaxle. 
I need to dig the project out of Mom’s basement and reacquaint myself with it.  Hopefully I will do that by the end of this weekend. A busy work schedule and then a toy show in Pennsylvania on Saturday will keep me from doing any work on it until next week but I thought I should tell you that I’m going to go ahead and lock this one in. No sweat, box not important. All that matters is that we see your basic plastic starting point so we can all appreciate your journey from aspiration to glory 😊. Looking forward to it. (Sorry Anthony, not trying to speak on your behalf).

While I intended to use the spare Thunderbird 390 engine from the Lindberg '34 Ford pickup, I decided to keep it simple by sticking with the kit-provided engine, which is a 427 big block Chevy... ya know, the one with the hole through it. So that's the first thing to patch.

I bought the kit at a swap and the engine halves and heads were glued on with no particular care. I'll live.

You're not wrong,  I'm Anthony Wayne... My mom named me after a historically famous insane person... 😆 "Mad" Anthony... A General from the Revolutionary War...  He's also the founder of the town we lived in... Waynesboro. but mostly famous for his mental illness which caused him many failures at the end of his short life at the age of 51. 😐😁😄

Yeah Buddy! I'm glad to see you using the kit engine and nice fix to the axle hole oil pan.. I believe that is the big block from the 69 Chevelle... very puzzling why AMT did that... I'd bet there's been many p.o. Ford guys who opened the box on that kit.😆 

And I love the wheel opening work you have done... that is superb! I wanna build mine now! Gotta stay focused on all these stalled projects that I'm committed to finishing in 2022 though...

if your ordering wheels I suggest getting them a size or two bigger than you think you need, they seem a little undersized to me but most of my builds are 1/24. they are nice though

Did some thinning of the resin panels to be able to insert the chassis.

Opened up the hood, which is easier said than done. Attempted to duplicate the cutline off the 1:1 around the nose bit it was too thick there. So I ended up cutting the entire front fascia off then once separated from the hood I put it back.

#1 1987 BMW 635 CSI 

made some progress today. Have decided to make a nice NA engine so I started on a new exhaust and I have also drilled the holes for the plug wires both in the distributor and the head. Thinking how I can make the angled plug wire connectors, suggestions? 
 

I am also thorn about the intake, “stock” GR.A intake, webbers or separate valve body’s and fuelinjection…
