NOBLNG Posted January 11, 2022 Share Posted January 11, 2022 (edited) I don’t know if this build of the MPC Godzilla jeep really warrants a build thread, but what the heck. This kit can be built as an MB or a CJ-2A. I am doing a resurrected old CJ. Mostly I want to detail it and correct some issues. One is the lack of detail on the differentials, and the fact that the ring gear is on the wrong side on the rear one. I decided to convert it to 12v, so I ditched the generator and added an alternator. I fabbed a new distributor and moved it to the center of the block where it belongs. Added a proper coil, fuel pump and air cleaner setup. Chariots of Fire Posted January 14, 2022 Share Posted January 14, 2022 Looks pretty good to me, Greg. I use small brass tubing (0.018) dia. for plugs. Holes are drilled in the head. If desired, you can over drill just the surface of the holes to show a depression in the head. Insert the pieces of tubing and then carefully grind away the tubing so that they are all the same height. Insert small craft wire in the tubing for the plug wires. This is quite small stuff but the look is pretty good. In the photo below you can see the "plugs" and some pieces of craft wire that will be inserted into the brass tubing. I crimp the wire over first so that it is bent toward the distributor where the wire is cut and inserted into the top. This is a Dodge T-214 engine, BTW that I used in the Weapons Carrier projects. Thanks Charles! That is a great idea. I thought that 1/16” od. was the smallest tube that K&S made. Is 0.018” the id? I just looked on their website again and see 1/32” od. tube(0.03125”) and 1mm. od. tube (0.0394”). A local hobby shop doesn’t stock it, but will order it for me so I will have it on hand. Chariots of Fire Posted January 15, 2022 Share Posted January 15, 2022 Trumpeter makes a brass tubing set called Master Tools. There are 8 pieces in the set ranging from 1.1mm Dia. to 1.4mm Dia. Got them at the local hobby shop. I was told they were telescopic but they are not. But they are good size for spark plugs. Each piece is almost 8 inches long. Item Number is 09944. I plan on adding a winch, so I need a big battery.🙂 The steering arm from the box to the bellcrank hits the front axle housing so I’ll have to put a bend in it or something. NOBLNG Posted January 16, 2022 Author Share Posted January 16, 2022 (edited) I cut the WILLYS letters out of some .010” styrene and glued them to another layer of .010”. Then I made a mold of it so I could cast it. There was no way I was going to attempt to make four identical scripts. One was hard enough!🧐 They came out just a touch big, but close enough.😬 I made a cutout in some .015” styrene and used it as a guage to file down the back of the castings till there was very little left of the second .010” layer, then attached them with thin CA. NOBLNG Posted January 21, 2022 Author Share Posted January 21, 2022 (edited) Got a bit more done on this one. The paint is Mr. Color Russet mixed 50/50 with Mr. Color levelling thinner. I scratch built some shifter levers from welding wire since the t/c shifters in the kit were pretty ugly.😬 The winch is a warn 8274 from Olsen Bros. I still have to wind the cable I made onto it. The CJs did not have a glove box like the MBs, so I got rid of it and printed a new dash plaque. I also replaced the lumps that the kit had for the park brake handle, throttle and choke knobs. I also scratched out a new rear view mirror and a wiper setup.
