Following along this one. I inherited this exact kit from my dad during my formative years of building 30+ years ago, and promptly butchered it. I sold the parts on eBay waaay back when it first started and have regretted letting it go ever since. I have the 90's issue and the 2000's issue with the flathead, but I would sure love to have that molded in black version again someday. Your kit looks minty, nice score.

By the way, Rod and Custom Models did a 2 part article on channeling this kit way back in 64 when it was new. Maybe you can find those issues (or someone can share some scans) to give you some guidance on the mods. You're off to a solid start.

Looking forward to following along. I procrastinated years ago when you could get these big kits used for $50-$75. Kicking myself now. I’d love to have a Big Deuce in my stash.

Thanks, I got lucky with this kit. Started working on the x frame bracing tonight, lots of CAD (cardboard assisted design) and measuring holy heck the measuring lol.

I need to get this step perfect so that the boxing of the frame rails goes without a hitch. Trying to build this as if it was the real steel deal.

And here is where work stops for the day, I need to wait for the intended engine to arrive in the mail before I can continue with the front  portion of the x frame. Then once that is complete I can follow up with the boxing of the frame.

Looking good, the Z looks perfect as does the X members. Where did you get the Ardun parts?

From a Facebook group Big Jim’s 1/8 scale garage. Quality stuff.
And now for the updates.

got my flathead block in the mail today and started mocking up the heads. Also got some different tires decided to pair them up with the stock wheels and it looks pretty good.

also got a parts jumble from another Facebook group.

You gonna section that big boy Bill?

I had not planned to section it, just to channel it over the frame. I still want functionality of the doors. That one that you have shown is pretty sweet has a very British roadster vibe to it.

Finally after a long week at work I finally got some time to work on the big ole Deuce engine.
Had to add some materiel to the block to accept the water pumps, a little masking tape template and here we are.
installed the valley pan cover and the front distributer mount, as well as the exhaust block block offs, these resin parts have some great detail and very little prep work is required.
Follow up with the heads and valve train covers and this engine is looking sweet.

I'm havin' almost as much fun watching this go together as if I was doing it myself.

Loved the reference to stone-age CAD too. One of my favorite techniques on the real ones as well.   :D

Thanks Bill, I’m enjoying this one as well, even though the progress is painfully slow lol.
Nothing better than old school CAD. If it works don’t fix it.
I need to add some detail for the crank snout housing as the caster of the resin omitted that detail. I need to visit my hobby store to get some bigger styrene, my supply was based on only building in 1/25 scale lol.
Cheers

  • Bullybeef changed the title to We’re gonna need a bigger boat! 1:8 32 ford roadster build. Updated HACKING!

Well with a channeled body and a z’ed cut in the rear there was no way the original floor pan was going to fit. And because of the x bracing just shortening it wasn’t gonna be the answer. Sooo a sectioning was gonna have to happen, I’m trying to use as much of the kit materiel as possible here.
the first photo is a Lie.
and after mocking it all up again, I realized two things:

1. I need to Bob the rear rails about 9mm to get the body to sit level again.

3. This thing is huuuuge!

Love that stance!

Thank you sir, I hope in its final form it will meet my vision.

Those 5 spokes look really good with the bias ply Firestones. My buddy built a 1:1 roadster with that same wheel/tire combo.

Thank you. I think the kit tires are a bit too 70’s for my liking and those bias plys look killer with the flathead. I’d almost like to have a set of cheater pie crust slicks for the rear.
