Revell B-17G Flying Fortress, 1:48, pic heavy

Recommended Posts

I just finished this up yesterday. When I started the build, I said to myself "why paint all that interior detail, no one will ever see it". But the inside was so well detailed that I couldn't pass up painting most of it. The fit between the fuselage halves was not the best especially the vertical stabilizer part. Comments welcome!

Well done!  That's the thing with those bombers... a lot of manufacturers put so much detail in the interior that we modelers can't ignore.  I built the Accurate Miniatures B-25 and totally detailed out the wonderful interior of that kit.  You did a great job on that old Revell/Monogram kit.

FYI: 231367 LG-R a 322nd BS B-17, "Chow Hound," was lost on a "milk run" August 8, 1944 with Lt. Jack Thompson as pilot. This B -17 took a direct hit by flak, broke into two and crashed will all hands lost.

Great B17 and fantastic detail.   My father flew several missions in WWII and I rode in the Nine-O-Nine about ten years ago.  Sadly that place crashed a few years ago and lives were lost.

I remember that crash.  It was just a couple years ago.

Yes very tragic.  I still have the polo shirt I bought at the air show.   We flew over Gettysburg PA battlefield and next to a P-51 Mustang.  One of the best experiences of my life.

Thanks for your comments Kevdog. In doing some online research in where to place the decals, I found two dates on when Chowhound was shot down: August 8, 1944 and also March 8, 1944. Not sure which is correct? In reading some of the stories about the plane and it’s crew, I see that many of the men were only in their 20’s when they were KIA when the plane went down. I’ve been to the wall honoring the Vietnam vets in Washington but someday I would like to see the memorials of the vets at Omaha beach.

Was your father a crew member on a B-17 Vamach1?

He was a pilot (8th Air Force) and flew 30 missions in several different B17’s.  He received a lot of medals and I was able to track down his flight records at the National Archives from just a few photos of his flight crew and a Facebook page led me to a website that had tons of information.  I put together a lot of information which I have in a photo album that is in storage.

Found pictures I posted years ago on Facebook.  My father is seated bottom row in the middle.

Very cool Vamach1. It's great that you were able to find information and photos about your father's service in WW2.

Nice and great vintage pics. They had a 1:1 one of these at WWII weekend at Reading airport a few years ago. sitting on the tarmac. The bomb doors were open and you could stick you head inside and have a look around. They would even take people up and fly around the place if they got enough people together but at 500+ a piece, (for fuel) not many takers.
