Winners of 24 Hours of Le Mans in Scale

1931 Alfa Romeo 8C, Lord Howe-Henry Birkin, Union Kit (Frog)

I first saw this kit when it was brought back from England by an acquaintance.  I just had to have one and it wasn't until I made a trip to London and found this one, but it was by then released by Union.  Union got the box art wrong by using an Alfa 1750 6C.  Only having B/W photos to go on I had trouble identifying the color of the wheels.  Later I found a painting with black wheels and most restored Alfa 8C now have black wheels, so I repainted mine black too, about 40 years later.

1962 Ferrari 330 TRi, Gendebien-P.Hill, Teapot Graphics (John Johnson) resin kit.

The following model was built and photographed by William DePooter of Belgium.

And for a friendly comparison the same kit built by me but in a different setting.

And the winner is William DePooter!!!!

Thanks for the kind words, Helmut.  Many years ago there was an article in the old Motor Racing Replica News that described how to convert the Heller Talbot F1 to the Le Mans version.  It looked like the project was beyond my skill set, so I was very happy when Fernando Pinto of Portugal came out with his resin kit of the Le Mans Talbot a couple of years ago.

Gotta luv both of these models,  I would have a hard time picking the better one...they are both great.

1952 Mercedes Benz 300 SL, Lang - Riess, CMC 

The bar over the rear number light appeared only in practice and not during the race.  It was an experiment using a fluorescent light.

Can you keep a secret?  The model is a diecast from Germany but don't let the mods know.

1964 Ferrari 275P, Vaccarrella- Guichet, Monogram 

The 275P was an updated version of the 250P 1963 winner. With an enlarged engine and minor body modifications were made to the Monogram kit body.

 

 

1965 Ferrari 250LM, Gregory-Rindt (Hugus) - BBurago + Bondo 

The 250LM was an attempt to get a rear engined follow on to the GTO classified as GT.  It did not work and the 250LM was classified as a sports racing car and not a GT. NART entered this car with a less than enthusiastic driver crew who reportedly hoped it would breakdown and they could go back to bed.  NART entered another 250LM for Ed Hugus but it did not make it to the start of the race due to mechanical problems.   During the night time in the rain Gregory pulled into the pits complaining he could not see.  Rindt was summoned but could not be found so Hugus stepped in and drove until Rindt could be located and placed in the car which continued to a surprising victory.  NART kept Hugus's participation a secret because it would have disqualified their victory.

The BBurago model was modified with an extended nose using Bondo and Herb Deeks wire wheels.

Excellent models, Gary, of the Ferrari 1964 and 65 winners - as young schoolboys in Austria, we were all fans of Jochen Rindt, who later became Austria's first F1- world champion (tragically, after his death).

I will redo one of my built 250 LMs and try to make a longnose.

I have also been tempted several times in buying a 300 SL on ebay Germany, but either those CMC models were horribly expensive or prone to zinc pest (especially the Carrera Panamericana car) - so I kept holding back. 

Also a fantastic model is the - probably would have been 1955 winner - Mercedes 300 SLR by Minichamps (Fangio/Moss driving till the company withdrew the remaining works cars after the horror crash) with the famous air-brake.

Helmut,

I have the 300 SLR by Pauls Model Art.  Is It the same as Minichamps?  I will try and sneak it in with the D Type.

PM sent, Gary - they belong to the same owner/founder (Paul Günther Lang).

I have the 300 SLR Le Mans 1955, Mille Miglia 1955 and the Coupé which was intended to be raced in 1956 but became the private car of Rudolf Uhlenhaut, the racing engineer and developer, when MB pulled the plug.

1955 Jaguar D Type, Hawthorne - Bueb, Lindberg + Bondo

Before there were several resin releases of D Type Jaguars there was only the Linberg and Strombecker kits.  This model was based upon the Lindberg kit with an extended nose made of Bondo.

Well done, Gary - all the styrene kits that have been done seem to be of the shortnose type (the 1956 and 57 winners). Maybe I will turn one of my XKSS kits into a D-Type.

Here are two more from my collection.  Both models are 1/28 scale  and are made by Mitsuwa of Japan. This company made several Le Mans racers and all used the same battery powered chassis.  While considered mostly a toy the bodies were reasonably accurate. there were 8 total in the line (I have all of them built)  but only these two were Lemans winners.

 

The Matra MS670. Matra Equip would win Lemans in 1972, 73 and 74.  Paint is Humbrol  French  blue.

The Porsche 917KH of Richard Attwood and Hans Herrmann won the race in 1970.  I had to hand cut the white graphics from white vinyl  tape as the ancient decal sheet graphics could not be saved. I did mange to save the sponser decals but they haven't stood the test of time much better.

Very nice build, Rich,  of an ugly racecar (at least for my taste) - though the new Le Mans cars may be much more efficient aerodynamically and mecanically than earlier ones, they're missing the elegant lines and look bulky (the same goes by the way, for the actual F 1 racers)

Probably couldn't agree with you more, Helmut.  But as a model kit, for me, it was a "gotta have"

This is a really marvelous build of the very simple Monogram kit.  Scott really nailed the interior.

Excellent build of the last Le-Mans-winning works Ferrari. I will save the interior photo for my own buildThe tires seem to come from Protar's 250 GTO (later reissued by Revell AG).

1949 Ferrari 166MM Barchetta, Chinetti - Lord Selsdon, UMI kit

This resin kit was one of the early full detailed resin kits.  Paul Fisher mastered the body and Mike Quarterman did the rest.
