Sebring 12 Hours 1964 Proposed group build thread

Recommended Posts

Here’s what went wrong

the Bradford HRM Daytona body appears to have mastered based upon drawings published in 1964 in the English Model Cars magazine - these drawings were generally good - but the artist often did not have detailed measurments - so mistakes were made … the wheelbase was correct but the body measurments differ from those done by an architect who measured 2287 - since the body length is too long on the Model Cars drawings - the bonnett got short shifted to come up with the right wheelbase …

Ace - 23 and 32 are yours - IF you post the kits - and The post includes some initial work - per my Cobra Daytona post …

Gloobomb Monogram 275P, to be race #23. This is going to be more work than I thought. :D

Teardown complete except for sawing off the heavily glooed roll bar fairing and interior bits. Getting the wheels out of the tires without destroying anything was as close to brain surgery with a chainsaw and a hammer as I'm likely to get. The builder apparently used what remained of the tube after assembling everything else to make sure the wheels would hold together at 200MPH.

Testors/Italeri 250 GTO, with Deeks wire wheel centers (which I may or may not use), to be race #32. Though I prefer the proportions of the Gunze GTO (the only other Ferrari GTO kit I haven't moved west yet), this one has the correct rear wheel arches and lips, and a slightly flatter nose that looks,to me, more like the Sebring #32 car...but it needs an additional gill on each front fender.

Kit had been lightly started. Front lower pan sawed off, templating gills to add one forward.

Therefore the bonnett behind the wheel well is about 3/16s short - which is why Ace and I need some renshape ….  Now once this change is made I’ll probably lose the scale correct wheelbase - but the plus is that the engine comparent will look better - and the bonnett will look correct - its the best we can do until someone sits down at a computer and draws a correct Daytona for 3D printing [any takers?]

For wheels I will use the really nice ones from the Protar kit...

For tires I will go with HRM's Dunlops.  Before I go much further I need to consult with the Ferrari expert, Mr. Bradford.

Randy

I had forgotten how good those Protar wheels were - years before 3D printing …

Well I see we have an impressive list of builders already signed up!!!!

Pierre, that Corvette is just awesome my friend.  Way to set the bar up there!

Andy,  You are making great progress on your body mods, love it.

Finally made some decisions on what to use for my Ferrari GTO car.  Some pics of the chassis 3223GT car from Ultimate Car Page.

Randy, this should be a fantastic build. Possibly the most beautiful car ever made and the Fujimi kit + your upgrades...wow should be awesome!

Nice surgery there Bill!!!!

Like your attention to detail Andy:)

Gary, looking forward to the Porsche build. That old kit really does have a bunch of parts!!

Rex, Good choice there Sir.

Misha, really cool choice! Do not see to many of these built.

Some progress....

Squirted some primer on the body to see what I've got , looks pretty good..

Borrani's assembled,  the one at an angle has been painted with a dull aluminum and added the chrome knockoff, looks like I will not be using the Dunlops, need to source some Goodyears...

Question for our intrepid leader....okay to post photos from the William Jordan site?

gather round , youngsters…

this is the 1/25th scale Ford GT prototype kit - designed by the great Budd Anderson.   with wire wheels - correct for 1964 - this is the car that graced the race program cover  -  and two were entered for the ‘64 race - they just weren’t quite ready - so I’m going to build the Number 9 program cover car - and i think Mr Chernosky 8E39B420-8E5D-42BD-AFA7-5BBB1104254B.jpeg.28dd48cd1480b4e56cf9508742379102.jpegwill post one he’s built - but there’s a second entry to build - who’s in ??!

Both GT40 prototypes were written off in crashes before the end of the race yr - but there are a handful of color pix and 2 dozen fantastic Bl whites of chassis 101 on The Ford Motor Company’s on line research site … so we know exactly what the Sebring cars would have looked like … and there is a re-creation of 101 - i think a collector in Europe did it …

Here’s an interesting thought - Ford’s factory entries were often campaigned by competing teams - including Shelby - so IF the Sebring entries had made the race - it is quite possible that they would have carried contrasting liveries - maybe the white / flat blue nose on 101 - but maybe 102 in different livery ???

Andy...I think have twice that many parts in my Ford GT junkyard. If you need something let me know.   What are you going to do for an engine.. I looked and didn't find too much.

Probably just grow each kit part with some bits of Evergreen plastic  - and I’ve got some 25th scale Webers in my parts box  - the keys are to maintain the correct height and location of the rear axles and to make sire that the exhausts are clear of the suspension trailing arms - also deepen the crank case and open the chassis base plate for the bottom of the engine - see Mr. Ditton’s GT40 build ..

I just found this white metal Gurney Westlake engine in my cleverly labeled Engine Kits box.  It is larger than your kit engine and smaller than 1/24.  It was produced by R&D Unique prior to becoming MiniExotics and has pretty good detail.  The valve covers would need to be changed and it does have a dry sump.  It is yours if you decide you can use it.

Hi Andy, I have found in my stash a pre painted vac form Iso.

It  looks reasonably good but I will need to review dimensions and see what I can do about the wheels prior to seeing if it will slush mould.

If someone turns up with a resin kit offer them the slot.

I'll keep this link informed of my progress.

Dave B

PS it would be a curbside
