Made up five "tuck and roll" pieces for the interior (to go with the two pieces for the seat). And the cleanup/sanding work is about to the point where I can call it ready for primer. Joe Nunes Posted January 2, 2023 Author Share Posted January 2, 2023 The upper body welt needed a good sanding to make it look nice and uniform. I decided to just remove the welt and replace it with a piece of half-round plastic. Started to sand the welt off and as my eyes wandered around the work bench I saw my Empire 6” ruler made of tempered stainless steel. Running the sharp tool edge over the plastic welt resulted in a flat, smooth, removal of the welt plastic and brought the welt height down to where it is even with the body plastic. I have already scribed a relief below the original welt material so now I can glue the new half round welt plastic to replace the original uneven upper body welt. This was a standard scale for Monogram although they released a '32 coupe with a clear top in a slightly larger scale. Joe Nunes Posted January 6, 2023 Author Share Posted January 6, 2023 There is an area on the body that keeps getting my attention and I thought I would call it out for you so you can be aware. The joint between the cowl piece and body sides can separate due to there not being much plastic material for a secure glued butt joint (can I really say that here? 😉) The joint on the port side has started to come apart a couple of times so far on the build. I glued the cowl to the body again this morning and have decided to install a piece of flat plastic across the glued joint, on the inside of the body, to reinforce the area and as an aid to keep the parts together. I will make the reinforcement pieces to look like upholstered strike pads where a driver’s foot might contact the inside of the body. Nothing fancy but it should do the job for me. Decided to see if I could glue the new upper body welt line using only one piece of half round material so there would not be any breaks in the welt from one side to the other. A length of Plastruct .040”/1.0mm half round was pulled from the package, I think I took a deep breath, and I started the gluing procedure. Moving slowly, and using various sizes of clothes pins for clamps, the half round was successfully glued onto the body. Had to play around with the model for a few moments. The top is sitting on the body without pins, glue or tape. Joe Nunes Posted January 20, 2023 Author Share Posted January 20, 2023 Have been looking at the back window opening on the top. Decided I didn’t want to leave it as a “hole” on the model. A window surround was made for the inside of the top from the same plastic sheet material used to make the details for the inside of the body. I thought it looked good on the inside of the top, so, I tried it out on the outside of the rear window and will be making a matching design outside surround, too. The original window molding piece will work better for the inside of the top. Also am considering a small piece of the plastic sheet for the firewall, similar to the addition to my AMT 1936 Ford Roadster build as shown in an included photo. Once that’s made I can do a bit more final sanding and then wash the parts in preparation for the primer coat. I have included a photo showing my color choice for the major items; straight out of the can for the body, and grill. The frame rails and engine block will be body color with a Testors Dull Cote overspray to break up the color sheen a bit. Interior will be white with body color accents.
