1980 Porsche 911 Targa Carrera Outlaw

After a four-month build, I’m pleased to add my 911 to the completed Cannonball builds.

The goal of the car was to make an outlaw 911 that retained the refinement of a Porsche, but still held some “grit” of a purpose-built Cannonball entrant. Initially, the idea was a simple straight from the box build with modified colors. But, as the build progressed, I wanted to make a full outlaw. So, the body was simplified with the removal of bumper trim and rear bumperettes. The body itself received a non-factory muted green color (Tamiya grey-green) with metallic grey and matte black trim and accents.

The interior received a two-tone black and tan color scheme to compliment the exterior. Seat belts were added with 3D-printed seat belt guides and anchors securing them. The floor was flocked with embossing powder and painted.

The engine is where the greatest modifications took place. The exhaust and ITBs were designed in Fusion360 (as were all 3D-printed parts) and printed. The exhaust itself is tubular and removes the heater core for greater performance. The intake is composed of six individual throttle bodies with fuel injection. Furthermore, an oil cooler was placed in the front bumper and fully plumbed into the engine. Additionally, clutch linkage was added underneath. Printed oil tank, oil thermostat and clutch linkage were made. Ignition wires, throttle linkage, fuel lines and oil lines complete the engine.

Finally, the wheels were modeled on the classic Campognolo wheels and printed to fit the kit tires. The wheels were painted matte black to balance the color scheme and help anchor the lighter body color.

Exterior Paint: Tamiya Grey-Green, metallic grey and matte black

Aftermarket: various wires and photo-etch from Detail Master and Gofer racing, Evergreen and Plastruct plastic stock, BMF decal paper

3D Print: wheels and valve stems, oil tank and thermostat, clutch linkage, ITBs and linkage, fuel filter, full exhaust, ignition coil, fuel filter, seatbelt guides and anchors

Body modifications: smoothed bumpers, front bumper grille opening for front-mount oil cooler (scratch-built), stock exhaust tip location filled.

Exterior mods: scratch built headlight/grille inserts, scratch built LED-style taillight lenses self made licence plates, notched rear bumper to accept exhaust tips made from copper tubing, lowered suspensions.

Wheels: Tamiya Mercedes DTM wheels and disc brakes set in Scale Production 23" aluminum sleeves and tires.

Engine: Dodge Viper V10 robbed from a die cast.

Interior mods: Four Viper bucket seats, stereo system, digital instrument cluster, touch screen GPS.

Just goes to show what can be done with a kit that has plenty of issues. I really like the paint scheme/color choice... the wheel/tire package really sets it off though...

Here is my entry. Revell 1967 Chevelle. (started with a rebuilder) Disk brakes and exhaust came from a '90s AMT nascar kit.  Wheels and tires from the parts box. The engine?   

Well....now this is where things start to get interesting. (switching to CB mode now)

You see, I have this engine builder north of the border (Canada 'eh). He is a wizard with an engine. It's just a little 'ol twin turboed, EFI,  572 b..b..c.  He wouldn't even tell me how much hp it was putting out, only that it was in four digits. Every time I threw a number at him, all he would say is "higher 'eh".  And sneaky? He is the king of  sneakiness.  He crated this bad boy up, packed Red Green dvds around it duct taped the lid on, and covered it with Media Mail stickers. 

When it arrived at my place, it was mated up with a Tremec 6spd, and a spooled 2:14 geared 12 bolt posi unit. Suspension components were stol....ummm...I mean "borrowed' from a certain black and gold nascar. (I sure hope the museum curators don't notice it sitting on cinder blocks for a few days). A road racer buddy, who shall remain nameless (because he IS nameless), dropped off the wheels and tires. I also hopped the fence and "borrowed" the exhaust from another nascar team. (whichever team you dislike the most, well, that's them) How do I keep this thing running cool you ask. Well , I have coolers on everything you can imagine, including my drivers seat (no way is my butt going to stick to the seat if I can help it). How long can I go on a tank of gas you ask. Well, I really don't know. You see, it has a custom fuel cell that starts in the trunk, between the inner fender wells, right up against the back seat, and from there proceeds to use every available square inch of trunk space, as well as dropping down through the trunk floor where the stock tank would be mounted. I had to take a second mortgage out just to fill that monster with high octane. It really won't matter though, because at a 180, this thing will be turning so low rpms that I can easily sing along to my Sammy Hagar cassette (I...can't drive....155). When I took her out for her debugging shake down, I went by this trooper so fast that when his radar gun alarm woke him up, he looked at it and thought he must be parked to close to the airforce base.

I think you will all agree that the back end of a '67 Chevelle is the finest piece of....sheet metal.... that you will ever lay your eyes on....no matter how brief that might be.

So when y'al arrive on the west coast, you'll find me kicked back, feet in the sand, holding a glass of Rhetoric bourbon, just watchin the waves.

Ready at the starting line is my 1981 Mustang Cobra. I started with the Monogram 1979 Mustang kit and swapped in the chassis plate and dual exhaust from the 90 convertible kit and the v8 from the Pace Car version. The intake is from the MPC Mustang Pace Car kit and the valve covers are from the Revell 32 kits. The exhaust manifolds are from the Revell 76 Torino, the air cleaner is from the Moebius 64 Nova along with a 3d printed Predator carb, and I swapped the manual for a C4 automatic since v8s only came that way in 81. The 4 lug wheels are Fujimi and the tires are from Fireball.

I wanted to build this in "Day 2" 1981 style so there's still some 70s left over with the big rear tires but on then modern wheels. I also converted the manual shifter to an auto T handle style and added a cb radio and antenna. The T tops were added to the car along with the rubber trim and roof bracing.

This is my finished entry for the birth year build. Started with the 62 Catalina Gasser. Took off the top to make it a convertible. Wired and plumbed the engine. Scratch built the filler panels for the end of the rear seat. Lowered the front and rear a bit. Wheels and tires came from 70 boss Mustang kit. Scratched out tail pipes and exhaust tips. Laid down the best black paint job I think I have ever done.

My entry for this year is a 1956 Club DeMer, which was a concept car built to highlight Pontiac technology at the time.

The kit was an original box vintage 1956ish, and was a curbside without an engine so I added an early LS engine from a Z06 C7 Corvette. I changed the manifold cover to one I designed that paid homage to the original hood design. I also added some printed Pontiac rocker covers I found on Cults 3D.

Bodywork was extensive, as the original design did not have headlights, and the grille opening barely existed. I also removed a large tail fin from the rear, and added taillights from the same Z06 I got the engine and driveline from. The windshield frame was from a 59 Corvette. I needed to narrow it a bit to fit, and sand the glass to match. I made the faux roll bar from a parts box piece that just needed a little trimming to make work. I designed and printed the outside mirrors and fuel filler cap. The wheels were printed as well. I bought the drawing from Black Box on Cults 3D.

For the interior, I designed and printed the dashboard, console, seats, and door panels. Barely showing between the seats is a hydration pump. No need for water bottles in this car. There are copious amounts of electronics to help the drivers spot and avoid law enforcement as well.

The trunk is packed with the water tank for the hydration pump (white), and the fuel cell.

Finally, underneath I wanted to stay true to the concept car design here by sticking with a rear-mounted transmission, and a DeDion rear suspension. I  copied this design from a Toyota truck. I designed and printed the chassis platform as well, because the kit chassis was made for steel axles, and was a solid piece.

Here is my entry... The year was 1973 the Watergate investigation was in full swing, Carly Simon was at the top of the charts with You're So Vain, and everyone was piling into theaters to see American Graffiti and The Exorcist... but what was really on everyone's mind was that New Chevrolet bodystyle change. Brand new styling and designs over at GM had everyone wanting a New Chevrolet truck. 

I built my Cannonball ride in the from of a "Repo-man" "Grab-n-go" 1973 Chevrolet Longbed stepside Tow truck. The details include: 

A Big Block 427 with dual-quads on a hi-rise intake.

Giant Sprint tires on Road tractor wheels. The front tires are swiped from a new Dodge Challenger. 

3D pinted wrecker boom supplied by BCSmodels.com

The front half of the bed features a built in fuel tank with two side gas tanks and the factory duel fuel tanks mounted on the frame. I think that much fuel may cost as much as the truck nowadays. 🤣😆 I hope I have enough to make the trip...

I chopped the top, stretched and widened the bed, modified the grill to a 1973 only "open" grill, lowered the 4X4 suspension, tubbed the bed, narrowed the rear-end, and I boxed in the rear bumper to appear as a Pro-street when the tailgate is up.

My inspiration came from an old toy I  had called the Clyde's Car Crusher. The wrecker in the set was Yellow and Red... I added weathering using the salt treatment and fading the paint using vinegar and a toothbrush. Finally I added a 1988 Toyota Corolla FX to tow around for fun. 😁

Thanks agian to everyone for the support in continuing the Cannonball Run Community build. This was a fun build as it came down to the wire for me this year! 😆

After a serious last minute thrash I actually made it to the starting line with my entry: "Plan Bee". Named so because my initial idea was getting too complicated,to the point that it was not going to be finished. I really wanted to finish this year, so I decided to regroup. Sticking with the '69 Super Bee that I had chosen for my birth year build, I decided to go the exact opposite direction and build a bare knuckle, old school street machine in the same vein as Hot Rod Magazines Crusher Camaro. If you look at the build thread you will see that the second build actually was a darker blue, but that got ruined and my finished build is actually a third body! Even though it was tense at times, I am glad it is done!

Details of the build:

Paint: Dupli-Color Medium Maui Blue, a GM color. Krylon Short Cuts Clear

Engine: kit 440 with Detail Master velocity stacks, valve covers from the AMT '49 Mercury, block hugger headers from Monogram '37 Ford sedan, resin distributor and plug wires added, electronic ignition from Monogram '37 Ford sedan.

Interior: Painted Tamiya NATO black, roll bar from Revell/Monogram '66 Malibu, shifter from Monogram Nascar kit, black flocking carpet added, dash and door panels detail painted.

Chassis: front suspension lowered and rear narrowed, scratch built frame connectors and driveshaft "loop", exhaust from Monogram '70 T/A Challenger.

Wheels and Tires: front tires are Monogram from the parts box and are older issue tires that are the same as the ones that come in the kit, but they are solid rubber/vinyl. I turned the smooth side out and added white letter tire decals from the SB kit. Backs are the larger street machine tires from a Monogram 1970 Chevelle kit with white letter decals added. Wheels are resin American 5 spoke mags, Modelhaus fronts and Drag City rears. Detail painted with Model Master Metalizer paints.

Other details: Mopar license plate on front bumper, Firebird Designs Pennsylvania license plate on the rear.

#1 1987 C1500 LSX 454SS 

I am born in October of 1987 so the new C1500 had hit the markets. And this is a LSX converted truck. Engine is a mix of C5 corvette LS engines from the PB with a C5R intake plenum, 3D printed valvecovers and new headers out of brass. It also runs a dry sup oil system instead of the AC. 
also converted to a “built” automatic from a Silverado. 
Radiator is C5R, and brake booster is a PB find probably from a Series one. 
long distance fuel cell moved to the back due to wait balance and also the battery have been moved further back to remove weight from up front. 
new custom exhaust with my own design on Magna Flow mufflers. 
 

Exterior wise it’s stock except from things out grill and replaced headlights for my own design. 
otherwise the truck is stock. don’t tell anyone that I messed up the paint and also the decals but I have printed new ones that will go on as soon as I can. 
o and yes it’s missing the mirrors.. al of them and som other parts as well but I consider this a win since I had given up even getting it up on its wheels due to my decal mess up! 
 

Some how the truck was extremely static so dust is to be seen in the pictures! 

The Swedish US size plate reads AMI987 for my original initials and my year.

1957 ford custom with a 427 cobra motor from Texas 3D customs, dual shocks front and rear, electric fan, tinted windows with real window tint, narrowed ford pickup rear end, mild tubbing to accomodate larger tires, 100 gallon fuel tank in rear seat with access from rear window to fill.

My birthyear build for the 2022 Cannonball Run. Monogram 1966? Shelby Cobra 427 S/C. It's painted in a custom mixed copper color using Chroma Molten Metals and Delta Creamcoat Black craft paints. The stripes are painted on using Delta Ceramcoat Black. It's cleared with Krylon Short Cuts Gloss Clear, wet-sanded, polished, and waxed. The wheels and tires are from the Revell Dom's GTX kit, the steering wheel from the Revell Ferrari Testarossa, gauge decals from Best Model Car Parts on ebay, and I added ignition wires. The chrome parts were stripped and painted with Anita's Glossy Black, and the interior is sprayed in Anita's Glossy Black craft paint as well.
