when i was growing up our local video store was a little bit seedy. my mum had been told you could get pirate new releases if you asked the right person. i'm not sure if mum asked the right person or not but it sure wasn't saving private ryan. very similar title but i'm not going to say it to save everyones ad blockers from imloding. suffice to say at least shes safe with netflix, lol

One remake that comes to mind which I thoroughly enjoy is The Thing from 1983. Can't beat the original, but that 1983 edition just sleighed me! POW!

I have no opinion regarding that "hot mess" re-remake from a few years ago.

I'd heard -read- rumours that a remake of They Live is "in-the-works". There is no way that the original can be 'bested', especially considering that its main actor is deceased.
Heck, that movie speaks more to today than it did almost 34 years ago!

BTW, @stitchdup, I know of which, um, version, of Private Ryan you're speaking of (never seen it, never will). Of course me mind goes to Seinfeld in respect to pirate films: Cry, Cry Again, replete with Elaine performing the "Thrusting Thumb Dance".

Yes, he is amazing in Papillion and so is Dustin Hoffman. Those 2 are great in almost every movie they do. Papillion made me hate nuns and love island girls. heh heh

I’ve got to add a few horrible remakes. The first being [The Out Of Towners].Then there’s [The In Laws],as well as remake of [The Taking of Pelham 123].And i have to say that all three of these movies were GREAT movies, and never should have been remade. And I gotta go along with Snake on this one,[Assault on Pct 13],was also a pretty bad remake,sorry..I also think the remake of Papillon was pretty lousy too,not horrible, but still pretty crappy..I just hope that if Spielberg is going to do a remake of Bullitt, that there are no dinosaurs (T-Rex)in the film, lol.

Mr. NYLIBUD, I'm with you on those 3 movies you mentioned in your first sentence. I think part of the problem (and my problem) is you had top notch actors in the originals and then they think they're going to make a better movie with whoever they get now. Just leave well enough alone.

Old movies such as mentioned above (The Thing) can benefit with new technology and scare the "blank" out of you so I don't have a problem with that.

Spielberg would have a tough time recreating the chase between the 67 Mustang and 68 Charger in "Bullit" which has gone on to become the granddaddy of all car chases in Hollywood history. Real men drove real cars then. I never was a fan of rebooting classic films.

McQueen's son and the Gas Monkey gang recreated the car, and then recreated the chase scene a couple years ago for TV. They did a pretty good job of it, too. It's probably on YouTube if you want to look for it.

The original (1974?) was the influence for Reservoir Dogs.

Huh,Really?Where did you hear or read that?I mean yes, there were some similarities in both films.First was a robbery, the train,(passenger hostages),in Pelham 123,and the diamond store in Reservoir Dogs.Second was that in both films, none of the robbers knew each other, and went by color coded aliases.Eg;Mr.Blue,Mr.Gray,Mr White/Mr.Pink,Mr Blonde,Mr Brown,Mr.Orange,etc.But other than that i fail to see other real concrete similarities in both films, but i could be wrong, lol. All i do know,is that both films were GREAT,and are definitely two of my favorites. Also Pelham 123 did have some pretty humorous over tones to it,thanks to Walter Matthau, and Jerry Stiller. And you gotta love the final scene of [The Taking of Pelham 123]”Gesundheit”,(German spelling,LOL)

Gesundheit”...

Makes me think of a potential woke sci-fi blockbuster to be called Gesundheit 451, about the systematic tracking down and burning of any papers questioning the origins or handling of the flu-like ailment that can't be named, and the related drug efficacy and side effects.

It’s not a remake, nor a sequel really, but a spinoff. Also, surprised many of you are bashing McQueen’s acting in the original, when it is in fact hailed as one of the breakthrough method acting performances on film, moving away from theatrical delivery, which prevailed in movies before that.
