Ford LTL 9000 Custom with Livestock Trailer

Recommended Posts

Is it crazy that the trailer will end up shorter than the tractor?!

Yeah, Bradley, it's a little crazy, but I'm a little crazy, too! Actually I have used my scale rulers on both, and the real truck would be 2 feet shorter in 1:1. The truck is 1:24 and scales to 38 feet long, and the AMT trailer is 1:25 and scales to 40 foot long, but I have never been one to nit oick between the two scales! :D If I would have had an extra trailer, I would have made a 53 foot spread axle like a more modern trailer, but oh well.

Looks cool & like whale said, truck looks longer than trailer & that going down the highway would get many looks & comments because, of that look I am sure but, me I see it's a mock set up on how you may do AC & wind guard but, I would dump the headache rack. That's me! The fenders gives that whole truck a plus look.

Thanks, Ken, and the mock up with the wing and A/C, plus the parts I got from Porky, is what I have in mind for the final product. I can't dump the headache rack, though, because even though I don't need a headache rack hauling cattle, I may also use this for other trailers later. The main reason it's on there, though, is it is hiding the square tubing I have glued to the top of the frame rail as a sleeper support and frame stiffener. The tubing sticks far enough out from the sleeper that the rack and deckplate for it covers the added tubing, and the tubing is also past where I cut the frame to add support there.

Love the look of your truck. Here are 2 Big sleepers I built awhile ago

Keep up the good work

Thanks, modeltruckmafia (didn't see your name anywhere), and thanks for the pics of yours! I esecially like the Pete 377, I have been trying to think of a way to mount my wing to the sleeper, and I like the way you did yours. It looks simple and does the job! By the way, what size is that sleeper, it looks a lot like the 230 inch I have planned for a future build.

Ken, here are a few pics showing the main reason for the headache rack on the truck.

This is the rectangular tubing I used for a sleeper mount and frame stiffener.

HPIM2124.jpg

That runs all the way from here to all the way to the cab mount just forward of my front cut in the frame. I decided the headache rack hides the tubing nicely, and the little that could still be seen from under the rack's deckplate appears to be the deck's mounts.

I also like to have trucks with some options of hauling different trailers, so I could also have my flatbeds or lowboy on the back of this. One future idea I already have for this truck is hauling a lowboy with a 1860s era steam engine on the deck, and yes, the train is 1:25 scale!

I think not sure on some things but, a 1/24th scale looks better being hauled on a 1/25th scale.

I'm right with you on that one! You know, you can get two loads out of that kit. My plan is to build two trucks lettered for the same transport company and put the engine on a modified tri-axle lowboy. The tender will go on an AMT Freuhauf flatbed. Secure the tender mid-trailer, off of its trucks on wooden cribbing and chain and block the trucks, one in front of and one behind the tender. If the 40 footer isn't long enough, I'll kitbash a 48' spreadaxle. I don't have the General yet, BUT I did score an unbuilt Airfix 1/25 scale P-51D at an auction last month... That's going to make nice cargo for a lowboy.

I'm interested to see how your "General" build progress's. I've been following this one since I joined the Forum and it's coming along nicely. I'm anxious to see it in color!

Does anyone else ever have one of those days where you just want to scream at the top of your lungs, pull your hair out, and take a hammer to the latest project!?! ;):) WELL, I'M HAVING ONE OF THOSE DAYS!!! I figured since the weather was so nice today, not too humid, bright sunny day, I would stop at the auto parts store to pick up the paint for the truck and maybe finally put something other than primer on it. I get to the parts store and go to the paint aisle, and find every DupliColor paint and primer EXCEPT for what I wanted, the DupliColor Mirage Purple/Red paint I was going to paint the truck! So I took my two cans of primer to the counter, and after helping one of the employees there find a headlight for another customer that he had spent five minutes looking for and only took me five seconds to find for him, I asked the clerk waiting on me what happened to the Mirage paint. He calmly tells me "We discontinued it, sorry." "GREAT!!! THERE GOES MY PAINT JOB!!" I thought, and, even though I already knew the answer, asked him where I might be able to find it. "I dunno." he tells me. So right now the truck will be on hold until I find the paint, even if I have to walk to the ends of the earth to get it! That, or I figure another color I will be happy with, but the Mirage has been the idea from when I cut the first part from the sprue!

P.S.: For the faithful followers, NO I'M NOT GOING TO DESTROY IT WITH A HAMMER, I was just kidding!! ;)

Chris, are you living inside my head!??! That is EXACTLY what I was planning! Well, sort of! My actual plan includes a trainload (pun intended!) of other models along with the two trucks. My vision has a police escort at the front, then an escort pickup or van in front of the lead tractor with the engine itself on it, then a chase vehicle and another escort vehicle between the two trucks, then the truck hauling the tender, then another chase truck and another police car bringing up the rear.

It will probably be quite a while before I get started on it, though, but when I do, you'll see it here! And yes, I already have the General!

Well, they do say "Great minds think alike!":lol::lol: That is one neat vision!!! That'll be one massive convoy! I thought about a Lindy Crown-Vic as an escort vehicle for mine...

As far as your paint problems go... Don't sell the bike shop, Wilbur! http://www.TCPglobal.com sells DupliColor Mirage, although I didn't see the Purple/Red combo you specified so it looks like the autoparts store just quit stocking it. You should be able to find it... I'll look around for you here at home... I've lucked out before!

Edit... OK, online I have found Purple/Green and Red/Blue but no Purple/Red... I think I now see your dilemma... although, The Purple/Green seems to have a red shift to it and the Red/Blue has a bit of a Purple shift to it... They look very similar on screen.

Yeah, great mind do think alike! And obviously, my great mind doesn't think too clearly sometimes! I just checked DupliColors website in their Mirage line:

http://www.duplicolor.com/products/mirage.html

and found out I goofed!! I was thinking the Red/Blue, I think I was getting the purple from the Purple/Green because the thought had gone through my mind of trying ghost flames with that! I think the parts store just isn't stocking it, but they ain't the only one in the area. I'm going to check the other stores the next time I do some running, probably later today.

Well, after driving all over town today, I have good news and bad news to report on the paint situation! The good news is I did find a local store that, even though they don't stock the DupliColor Mirage, they can order it in from their warehouse for me. The bad news is it would cost me almost double what I seen it priced when it was still readily available on the shelves!! I'm still considering having them order it, but I may just say the heck with it and come up with another color for it, even though I really wanted to try the Mirage paint on it!

Thanks Dennis, and since I was planning this paint job from the start, I'll probably just bite the bullet and spend the extra and get it from the one place here locally. I may end up finding a better color choice I'd be happy with, but I doubt it.

IT'S MINI UPDATE TIME AGAIN! As I had posted earlier in the thread I was problems finding the paint I wanted to use on the tractor, but the problem is SOLVED!! I solved the problem by deciding just to take the hammer to it and call it quits! HAHA I'M KIDDING!!! I had you going for a minute, didn't I?? :D Anyway, to the serious matter at hand, I did find a new color to paint the truck, and I'm liking this one MUCH BETTER! I was just about defeated on finding a nice alternative to the DupliColor Mirage when I stopped by the local Lowes. I ended up finding this there. The color is called Galaxy Blue, and there is a galaxy of colors in it!

HPIM2128.jpg

HPIM2129.jpg

When I was looking at the cap at the store, I seen at least blue, purple, green, gold, red, and hints of magenta and teal. Why worry about red and blue when I can have this! I test sprayed it on a spare 70 Coronet body, because I can't find anywhere on the can whether it is enamel or lacquer, mainly because I wanted to make sure it wouldn't craze or anything bad. I tell you, these pics don't do the paint justice, either.

HPIM2131.jpg

HPIM2132.jpg

Dennis, thanks for the advice, I was not going to be happy without the Mirage, UNTIL I FOUND THIS!! :D

P.S.: Look for the truck to be in paint SOON!!!! :oB):D

Good call on the color choice, and I believe with a good fade-in it will go wonderfully with the mural on the sleeper.

Thanks, Jamie, I kinda figured it was enamel, but wasn't 100% sure. Lowes did also have Rustoleum lacquers, too, but they were clearly marked lacquer on the can, so that was part of my confusion, too. You have to spray a black basecoat under the Colorshift first, which you have to buy separately, it is not like the Duplicolor where everything was sold in a kit. I will also have to buy some clearcoat for it, so I can have a nice high gloss shine. I'd say if you want your KW the same, go for it! The paint is (at least at my local Lowes) in the section where the spray paints are, and don't get sticker shock when you find it, just the can of the Colorshift is $19.99!
