This is "Nader's Nightmare", the 1966 Corvair Corsa Demolition Derby car that I built to show what became of my "Junkyard Refugee" AMT '66 Corvair Corsa coupe rebuild. This model started out as a body supplied by a new friend after I posted that I was looking for old Corvair model parts. This model was built almost exclusively from the parts box, using just a few bits and pieces from parts kits that I use in the restoration of other Corvair annuals I've picked up over the years. The only parts I had to pull from a different kit were the 14" steelies from an AMT '58 Impala.

I first built my 1965 Pontiac 2+2 based Demolition Derby car several years ago, during the era when the Joe Gibbs NASCAR team was still campaigning Pontiacs. A bunch of things came together in the build: I wanted to build a Derby car, I had a can of lime green paint that I wanted to try out on something, and the Bobby Labonte #18 car had just won the NASCAR race that weekend. I put all of that together and came up with a Pontiac painted up like the Interstate Batteries-sponsored car, but sponsored by "Interstate Auto Salvage"! I gave it the number "18sr" in recognition of Labonte's car.

I had to do some renovations to the model to have it conform to therules of the CBP. Those rules were based closely on actual Demolition Derby rules, and in some areas my model just didn't fill the bill. I changed several of the details and added a bunch of parts, most notably the "Shark's Fin" number board on the roof and the roll cage. The driver's door was repainted orange, and I added hold down bolts to the hood and decklid.
