sfhess
My daughter had a 2005 Focus sedan. It was reliable and economical and it saved her life. One night she flipped (not rolled) the car. It was totally destroyed but protected her. She emerged with minor injuries.

kpnuts
Well since a nice kind lady decided to drive into my wife, whilst stationary in a line of traffic at a roundabout and Wright our car off (May not look like to much damage but was 5 grands worth of damage) So now we have a new car. It's a titanium 19 plate close to 13 grand only 7100 on the clock. Pick it up next Sunday.

My wife bought a brand new Ford Taurus in Platinum and has had it for 8+ years and just loves it. She wants to keep it forever, so we'll see. I myself have driven Chevy trucks for 'bout 40 years and needed a change, so I have had a Ford F-150 for four years as I also bought it new. In fact I had ordered it just the way I wanted it to be and I'm very pleased with it so far.
kpnuts
I'm guessing a Taurus is the same as a focus here in the uk

It was larger than the Fusion/Mondeo. The US had the Focus (1st and 3rd gen), and the US Fusion which was a sedan version of the 4th gen Mondeo. Ctmodeler
Well then body shops there are insane . 5000 worth of damage and a total loss . That is crazy . Should have kept the car and the money and fixed that yourself or have someone for you .

Cash and carry is not the EU insurance way. Ford though, is very receptive to deals, I feel that OP did good. Here in Europe, I do believe that Ford here is a bit different from Ford in the US. I can attest, little Ford 4 bangers will run 80 to 100 mph all day long on the German Autobahn, and get great (!!) gas mileage. Recently, I had opportunity in a rental Ford 4 cylinder. Average speed for a 4-hour drive was right at 95mph. No brakes, just left lane and lots of fun. Very early morning, hardly any traffic. Got +35 mpg! Cheap fun. Insurance regulations there may prohibit fixing the car yourself...perhaps it has to be inspected afterward? Even over here, in some states if you rebuild a "total" you cannot get the same insurance on the car after the repair.
Rob Hall
In the US, that would easily be $5k worth of damage. This was over $5k on my sister’s Trax a couple years ago.
kpnuts
It had apparently done a fair bit of damage that cant be seen and it had creased the gas tank you couldn't open the rear door and it was 5000 in pounds stirling I'm over here in the uk
Spottedlaurel
I had my '93 Camry wagon written-off a few years ago after another driver went into the back of me. They let me keep it and gave me the market value, minus a little bit for what they said would be its salvage value. It looked tatty (still does) but I'd spent quite a bit keeping it going, it would have been very difficult to find another one and I think they're fantastic old things. The approved bodyshop prepared a quotation, it would have been around £3500 to get repaired so little surprise about that not happening! It took me three years to get around to it, but I got it back on the road again and I still use it regularly. All I did was fit another tailgate, luckily I had one spare from another wagon I used to have on the road. Even the bumper survived OK. The Audi A4 that hit me got written-off and scrapped. I didn't need to get an inspection, all my insurers needed was to know that it passed an MoT test. There used to be a procedure we had to go through here to get a repaired write-off back on the road, but that got withdrawn a few years ago. Today on the road I have a 2020 Toyota Yaris hybrid. It's a loan car while my Lexus RX450h is in for a service (yes, it was a surprise to me too to get that as my alternative, especially given how much this major service is costing). Just 50 miles on the clock when I was given it, I'll have more than doubled that by the time I get it back there tonight! It's OK, nothing too exciting, keeps up with traffic fine and is doing around 55-60mpg+ on open roads. By way of contrast, at present my RX is getting just under 40mpg (that'll go down to low-mid 30s when the weather gets colder and I use it on shorter journeys). The Yaris has obviously been pulled-off the forecourt for use as a loan car, they have it for sale at £15,695 as a used car even though it's basically brand new. I dread to think what its new list price might be.
Tom Geiger
About ten years ago my wife got hit in front left corner in my 2000 Jaguar S. We had it about a year and had paid $11,000 for it. It was mint and had less than 30,000 miles on it. The damage was estimated at $4500. The offending party’s insurance company offered $5000 cash and wanted the car. They wouldn’t talk settlement where I’d keep the damaged car. I declined, and was too busy with life challenges at the time to sue them so they got away with nopayment. I kept the car which still drove fine. Drove it with the dent all this time, never got repaired. Sold it this year for $3000. Here in US certain insurance companies have made a new industry out of flipping salvage vehicles. They can eliminate their outlay by reselling cars. One company has a yard not far from here that fills up weekly with barely dented cars they’ve screwed people out of. DonW
Not seen much on this topic for a while, maybe 'cos there isn't much opportunity to drive for a lot of people these days! I recently retired my old (1995) BMW 530i touring - one of the few with manual gearbox - and did a deal where my old racing friend will give it a good overhaul and his sons have bought a manual 330i for me in exchange for the old 2002 turbo I used to race but which has been languishing in his yard for years due to lack of funds. So now I drive this when I can. 3 litres, 230 bhp, six speed 'box. Black leather interior. Pictures taken on a cold day in the Brecon Beacons near my home. We have some great driving roads, no cameras, no safety barriers, just watch out for the sheep and the occasional horse. The wheels and tyres could be wider, as on my old 328i, but the current set up gives more responsive handling if not quite so much grip. iamsuperdan
As usual, I've made my late winter vehicle change. First time in a long time there's no pickup in the driveway! Daily is now a 2021 Expedition Max Limited with the "Stealth" package. Nice to drive, surprisingly decent on fuel, all things considered. Had it a couple of week now. This was from the first roadtrip last weekend. Looks like I saved the picture with the IG filters, and not the original. Ahh well. And I still have my old 99 Tahoe as my project/toy/whatever. Took it out in the -30 weather we had a few weeks ago. Performed admirably. Have a large pile of parts to install when the weather is nicer, plus some fab work on the interior, as I transform it into an Overlander-style vehicle.
