coreyh29645
petty crashed his car in practice and they did not have a rule to allow a back up car back then.
Roadkill2525
Richard crashed his car in practice two days before suffering a concusion and bruised leg, NASCAR officals didn't allow Petty to bring in a backup car so D.K. Ulrich offered his seat to the King. Richard Petty drove the Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2 in 1986 with this only exception. Dwight55
If you'll notice that is a Busch car, not a cup.
Roadkill2525
The Winston decal is above the Busch decal and hidden by Richard's hand.

1zebra3
I believe thats the Busch pole decal which you would not see on the Petty cars or any other alcohol or tobacco advertisement Edited February 2, 2012 by 1zebra3
dh85ss
THIS CAR DID NOT BELONG TO PETTY , HE RENTED THE CAR FROM D.K.ULRICH.
1zebra3
I know it did not belong to Petty that is why you see a BUSCH decal on it. As I stated Richard Petty did not permit acohol or tobacco advertisement on his cars.

Tommy Kortman
The contingency decals you see on the front fenders of the cup cars are minor sponsors of the series. You actually get these decals from NASCAR, and the package comes with a diagram showing you where each decal is supposed to go. NASCAR does this all the way down to the local weekly racing series. (Late Models). Nice photo of a rare moment.
