That's a naturally aspirated Caterpiller 3208 that was built for Ford by Caterpiller and sold in Ford trucks as the V200 or V220. From what I've heard, this engine is actually a Caterpiller 1160 which is the predecessor to the 3208. Apparently the 1160 & 3208 had different fronts.

Hi Jim,

Did Ford paint the engines blue or leave them cat yellow in the Louisville Line trucks? I only drove a couple of Louisville Line's and they both had DD 318's that were so cruddy you couldn't tell what the original engine color was :o

Rick, I'm pretty sure Justin is correct as you could probably find them in both. Ford truck engines in the 1970s were Ford Blue, but if there was a rush order the engine probably would have been OEM color. Similar to Peterbilt & Kenworth who had their engines painted white, or International who had their engines painted red; but OEM colors always crept in!
