My Dad's '37 Ford Pickup UPDATE 1/9/2014

Because of recent events, I have decided to halt all other projects and begin this one. I have been gathering parts for the last few months but have been waiting to start the model until the actual truck got finished. Obviously, that will not be happening for a while.

My dad told me that I would get the truck if something ever happened to him, but I wasn't expecting it to be this soon. I do not know if I will end up getting the truck after all is said and done, but if I do, I plan on finishing where he left off. It will be built as a memorial to my dad and grandpa who started working on the truck many years ago.

I have a Syclone, Waverider S10, and '37 Ford Pickup that will be used for this project. I don't have the best pictures of the truck, these were all taken by my dad with his cellphone. I do not have any pictures of the truck before the cab was extended.

I will begin on extending the cab tomorrow but it may take a while because this will be the first time.

Cool truck man, the color looks awesome. Let me guess it's sitting on a s10 frame? Popular swap for the older trucks. Good luck and can't wait to see the progress.

I hope to see this at a local show some day as I only live a few miles from you. It would make a great memorial to your Dad and Grandpa.

Yep, S10 frame and ol' 4.3 V6 carb'd with a big cam. My dad did everything on the truck from the engine to the paint. I just hope I can find a spray can that is close in color to this.

I'm up here in Pendleton, we hold a car show every year. I'm hoping I can get the truck done for the next car show.

Started chopping up the cab and got this far last night:

Then this morning I started filling in the gap with strip styrene:

This is where it stands so far. I will keep working on it and hopefully get the cab finished today assuming nothing gets messed up.

And so everybody knows, this thread will mostly be dedicated to the model build, but I will be including updates on the 1:1 once I start working on it.

Thanks Shane.

Got the cab as far done as possible. I've never been too great at bodywork, so it's not perfect. Also extended the frame and steps, or whatever those are called.

I still need to modify the frame more to make everything fit. I was unable to find any spray paint in close color to this so I guess I'm gonna have to learn how to use an airbrush and hope there is some paint left over from the truck.

Keep it going. Go slow. Make it perfect. You are on the right track. I'd sand all the body lines smooth and then remake them with half round stock. That would keep it clean.

That's a good idea, I'll try that. Thanks.

The trick to body work is to take your time and go slow. Lots of sanding and lots of patience. Once I think its close to perfect ill go back and prime the body and see where there is still flaws. The trucj is looking good though!

If you would rather use a spray can than an air brush get the paint code from the paint can and take it to the place the paint was mixed. They should be able to mix a can for you.

If I can't get the airbrushing down, I'll try your idea.

I didn't get much done today, but I did start work on the trim. I decided to use rolled-up putty instead of half rod styrene since I would have to order it online. So far it's working fine, I just have to wait for it to dry so I can start smoothing it out.

John,

You've done some nice work so far. Would it be easier to use part of a second cab to extend it though? May be less shaping. I have an extra cab and lots of extra parts fro this kit that I could send to you. I could also send some half round styrene that would be the same size as the body molding. I should have some that will work.

Let me know. I am sorry to hear about the loss of your father.

Thanks for the offer Tom, I think the cab is nearly complete though. I'm still working on smoothing everything out and should have pictures tonight if all goes well.

The body isn't quite perfect, but I'm going to set it aside while I start working on the drivetrain. I still need to do a little more smoothing and possibly redo the trim, but I should be able to fix it.

So, the pictures highlighted some of the things I need to work on and I will be finishing up the body when I get some free time tomorrow.

Patience Grasshopper! I doubt your Dad rushed his work on the 1:1, so take your time and honor him with a nice build. If you get frustrated, take a breath, step back and walk away for awhile.

This will be a nice tribute to him John, and we are here to help you if you need us!

John,

Glad to see that you are making progress on this. My offer still stands. If you need ANYTHING from the 37 Ford Pickup kit, drop me a line. I've got a box full of parts from it and the panel truck waiting in the wings for you.
