Neat...I built that kit as a kid back in the day..still have it, in it's brushpainted glue bomb form as I built it at age 8...

It looks like a nice kit , but why ? Did MPC sell a lot of these or did they end up on the "sale" tables ?

I'll apologize now since I'm sure I'll get blasted for that comment .

When I first started selling cars in 1978, the very first car I sold was a new Light Blue Metallic 1978 Chevette. I have one in my display case which was a built up I bought on Ebay. I would like to get two of these kits somehow to do the car right, as the one I sold was a 4-door, and MPC' Model was a two door.

Bob,

Those were the days of annual kits and for some strange reason, I always thought the Chevette was a neat little car. My best friend from the neighborhood had a couple of different ones and they were simple little cars to drive and maintain, if they were not abused.

I wish the couple I had back in the late 70's didn't get tossed when my Dad decided to clean the basement out one weekend but there were some other more valuable kits he tossed too! I guess it was payback for the missing tools from my bicycle building days!

Thanks for the retro-review , Casey !

I've built a number of these when I was young (back when these annuals were new) , and , yes , they were typically in the bargain bins at the fledgling department stores ( Penney's , et al. ) .

I'd like to have one of these now a days ! I'd build it as a fictitious Baldwin-Motion Phase III !

I seem to remember seeing a variation of the Chevette on one of the earlier modern Dr. Who shows (the Dr. was being played by the villn from the second "Gone in 60 Seconds") and I thought those were sold by Opel too.

And all this was a precursor to the "J" body cars that debuted in 1982 which ultimately led to the demise of the "T" car. Who could forget the wonderful FWD Cavalier from Chevy and of course the luxury version Cadillac Cimarron?!?!?!

I would say the GM H-body cars (Vega/Astre/Monza/Sunbird/Firenza/Skyhawk) were the J-body's predecessors.

Cool. Thanks for the pictures. I like the Chevette kit because it represents an era of model manufacturing that, for some reason, thought people would want models of cars that were mundane.

Really, the Chevette is an ugly slug - my wife had one for a time. The design is really void of anything interesting and that 4 cylinder put out a whopping 60 hp or so. It did get decent gas mileage though.

I like the model (and the accoutrements), just not a fan of the real deal.

I guess I'm drawn to ugly, slug-like designs. :lol: I've always like the split grilles on Pontiacs, and the Astre and Chevette/Acadian both had 'em:

I tend to gravitate toward hatchbacks and cars with fastback rooflines, too, so even the 4-door Chevette has some appeal to me. I think their simplicity is also appealing, but you're right in that they are definitely and entry level car, devoid of almost all creature comforts and luxury options...which is probably why they got 40 mpg.

This is just about the frumpiest car you could buy in '77, but the oddball Sandpiper package has a unique appeal to me. I guess growing up during the "flares and tape stripes" era has had a lasting effect on me. :D

I like the Sandpiper graphic. That would make a nice build - looking at the "loaded" list - the Sandpiper edition was loaded, including "deluxe belts".

I see your point, too. The design is simple - the car is simple and follows the principle of its design. I like cars others think are "ugly" too.

I like Chevettes. I've actually been watching for one for something cheap to drive in-town. They're not so great on the highway. Unless, of course, I can find a GenII MFI 2.8 litre V6 from a Camaro with matching automatic to drop in it.....

I'd love to see this kit come back, or at least the diorama parts. I can think of a few uses for that tent.

I might like to convert one to the 1980 4-door my mother had for a couple of years. Now, how to make that different grille/headlight combination and the wraparound taillights.

MPC did '78 and '79 Chevette kits and promos with the "flatter" nose, but I don't think they did an '80+ with the wraparound tailights.

I had a Chevette; I think it was an '80. It had air conditioning and I was crazy about that little car! I fondly remember the kit as well. I would love to get another kit of this car.
