What did you get today? (Model Car Related Items)

I need another project like I need another hole in my head. But I also have a really soft spot in my heart for old good quality builds on eBay estate (?) sale-looking auctions that seem like they are being neglected by bidders. Got it with a single bid, $29 total including shipping. Seller had another dual engine roadster, which somebody else saved with a single bid: https://www.ebay.com/itm/275352028692 . Really dusty, all photos here are of it mere minutes after unpacking from the shipping box this afternoon. Apart from the huge sink lines in the door panels, it's still in very good shape overall for paint & build quality, no other major sink areas where the fenders were filled front & rear. Distinctive details are the quad headlights / oval grille opening, fuelie engine, one-piece rear window, and TV in the trunk. Judging from the wire "hinges" for the doors & trunk lid, they were meant to be displayed permanently open, so that's why I can't put them all the way shut. It should shine up nice, and if there's only one bit of remaining minor glue holding the body on, I might be able to pop it off to clean the interior.

Can't say I understand what the "thing" is (looks like the pulley end of a 2-part alternator) n the oval grille opening area, or the choice of what appears to be unfinished taillights at the back, though.

Anybody recognize it from ancient '60s model car mags?

Shipment arrived today. Lotus type 33 and some paints. Never built a formula 1 car but this one captures the era of racing I really like. How does the old saying go. When sex was safe and racing was dangerous.  The Lotus looks a bit of a daunting task with tons of small parts and I still have tons of stuff on the bench before I ever get to it.

Funny thing about the Tamiya model, no plastic shrink wrap. No attempt to seal it at all. I suppose they're going green  or something.

They normally do not shrink wrap kits in Japan or Europe. Just a little round tape at the sides like was done in the USA pre 1965.

No round tape either.

If you ordered it off ebay depending on the seller and where he got it from.  I know if you order kits from plazajapan they will come without shrink wrap and tape.  You can see the contents right on the site before you order the kit.  I've had my eyes on that kit for awhile myself just haven't gotten it yet.

Driving home this morning and saw a Yard Sale sign. Stopped to find most of the normal garbage. I asked if they had any model kits. The guy brought out these that he had said he had for years. Both complete and unstarted. The Duster is still sealed inside. Got them both for $15. Now I'm looking for more Yard Sales on the way home. Just stopped at my second. Lol.

Later-

I actually got the parts I needed to build my MPC Super Stocker GTO on Friday from Khils (Kevin Hilsabeck). Body. Hood. Glass. Headers. Decals and instructions.  I’ve never built a car like this so It should be interesting. Thank you Kevin!

Hi Mike , I built this one recently which includes some of the molded parts from the Tamiya Lotus 25 along with new tooled parts from Ebbro. The best part of this kit is the machined aluminum injector stacks that are included, wish these were available aftermarket. I had a bear of a time getting the upper cowling and engine cover to fit/ fully seat onto the lower tub. I recommend doing lots of dry-fitting and tuning if your kit parts fit like mine did (hopefully yours will fit better!). The assembly and alignment of the exhaust headers was also a test.  It’s a beauty when completed and I hope someday to build another one of these along with a Lotus 25. Good luck! John

Looks great John! I hope mine comes out 1 10th as nice looking. Thanks for the tip on the cowl. You're right, those headders look like a bit of a daunting task. Gonna be a while until I get to this build. I have at least 10 other projects on the bench in front of this one. I always liked the wheels on these. Kind of reminiscent of the Torq Thrusts we saw on the musclecars in the 60s and 70s, 😎

Mike, on the Lotus 33 headers, leave the bond joints between headers and block to the very end, after you’ve aligned the header extensions and wire support thingy that’s attached to the rear of the chassis. If you follow the instructions and pre-bond the headers to the block earlier on, you’ll regret it. Almost took a hammer to one I built after following the instructions!
