GeeBee Posted February 16, 2013 Share Posted February 16, 2013 I already had two of these in the stash, and the weekend I won another off eBay, it came this morning and instead of putting with the others in the stash, I decided I really needed to get one on the building board. A quick look at the parts, and compairing it against the Tamiya version I can see some plus points on the Revell version, a little more detail and a slightly different way of building it .. As always, I started with the body, not sure why, but I've always done it this way, one thing I noticed on the body was a moulding line on both front wings, the L/H side was slightly worst, and the line goes through the panel line that goes through the front valance and also goes around the top of the wings by the headlamps, it didn't take long to remove with a sanding stick, then smoothed out with a finer sanding pad. Before After That was the worst part of the body and apart from just cleaning off a little bit of flash, the body is pretty good, there's a lot more mould lines to remove on the Tamiya version After removing the bonnet and roof from the parts tree, and getting ready, I started on the engine, which goes together real well, I've left of certain parts until the engine has been sprayed green Although it tells you to fix in the engine first then fix on the inner wings, the Tamiya version has these moulded as part of the floorpan, I dry fitted the inner wings in place then tried to fix in the engine, which it did without any problems, so the inner wings and bulkhead were fixed into place, it will make painting a little easier and will of course look better Another nice touch over the Tamiya version is seperate subframes, the Tamiya version has them moulded as part of the floorpan with just the outer parts of the subframe to add, which you do have to add to the Revell version, but should look a little better once fitted and also has the little fuel pump fitted to the subframe, this is a seperate part and fits on without problems. A few parts mounted on cocktail stick ready for painting And the colour I'm going to be painting this one ?? I've had this paint for a while, as I was going to convert another Tamiya Mini to a Pre '66 body, I won't have to do this with the Revell version .... GeeBee Posted February 23, 2013 Author Share Posted February 23, 2013 A little more progress on the Mini, the wheels were stripped of there chrome, as I think the chrome looks a little thick and of course the originals were made of polished stainless steel, so they were soaked in household bleach for around 20 min's, and then rinsed under cold running water, they were then primed, and then given a couple of coats of gloss black lacqer ready for the Alclad. Most of the smaller parts have been airbrushed, and the interior panel have had there body colour parts painted, they will be masked up so the grey vinyl panels can be airbrushed, this is a little different to the way Tamiya do it on there Mini Cooper, but I think by the time it is all finished, it will look just fine, The roof panel was airbrushed in Old English White lacquer, it will wet sanded and polished out before painting the gutter rail in body colour Now that body has had a bit of time to dry off, I thought before I do any polishing and then the BMF for the chrome trim, it was a good idea to see just how well the body and the chassis fitted together, as after building quite a few of the Tamiya versions, which can be a little tricky in getting the two together without a lot of bending etc, well I can report that the Revell version just falls together, there are two locating tabs at the front, but everything lines up absoloutely perfect ... (We have a couple of Mk I's in the Mini Club I belong to, Old English White top looks great on them.) Can't wait to see the finished model. I was checking out your wheel build up and thought to myself, "Hey where are the cooling holes?" Not a "Cooper S" so no cooling holes! Wonder when Revell will come out with the "S" version? That colour, Fiesta Yellow was one of the the least popular colours on the Cooper's but I kind of like it, here what it should look like when it's finished I don't thin it will too long before Revell offer the 'S' version, as if you look on the inside of the body, there are two mold marks where the fuel tank fillers should be on a later 'S' version, also under the rear parcel shelf there are four holes molded in, not sure what these are for, are Revell going to be doing a Race/Rally version ?? GeeBee Posted February 25, 2013 Author Share Posted February 25, 2013 Not a great deal done today, as I had to do a bit of grocery shopping, then a visit to see Mom, but a little bit of masking, so I can crack out the airbrush tomorrow. As I had built the front end up, and not follow the instructions, it needed masking as the base would be the subframe on the real thing, and these were black, or that's the colour they started off at, a few months, and they were usually covered in engine oil .... Cheers, Jim Well I did a build a few years ago, and I ended up stripping the interior parts, and the artists acrylic was the hardest to remove, and it needs no clear on top, you won't see this paint once the flocking has gone on, but for interior seats and vinyl parts, it looks great, just the right amount of sheen, and there's plenty of colours to choose from Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It's easy to add subtle shading and a bit of texture, and you can create wrinkles using a gel medium. You can also change your mind in the process by washing some of it away with water.
