Joker
This truck is part of a CBP Tow Rig/Trailer entry. Engine swap for a 409 (thanks Bill_R). Cab corners fixed, bed fixed and tailgate modified. Panels scribed, rear window weather strip redone. Yada Yada Yada... doing a diamond plate for the rear bumper ala Jairus Watson (thanks Jairus) MCM article. Spoiler Alert ! Five lugs are being used not six ! Tires are from the 50 Olds stuffed with foam for a balloney look. Joker Edited April 22, 2013 by Joker
Joker
Weather in the Ol' Dominion is not cooperating for paint. So here is a small update. Added side trim and made a hood scoop. The trim is stacked Evergreen #104 for the bottom and #8104 for the top. Scoop was cut on 3 sides lifted and made a smooth bend to it. Planning on adding screen mesh to the scoop opening. Still have to add a gas door since I filled it up during the bodywork stage. This view shows the new rear window weatherstripping and the scoop opening. Can't stand the plain look of the bed interior,so I made a bed cover for it. Joker...gone fly fishin'
Joker
Two more .. (note to self)..paint a used dryer sheet flat black to use as heat insulation and cover up the bottom of the hood.Make a tape patterns first and tape to dryer sheet then paint. 409 needs some washes but it's on it's way. TooOld
Lookin' good James ! I love the old 409 instead of a standard big block . Nice mods too , especially like how you did the side molding . I missed the article on diamond plate , can you show what you're doing ?
Eshaver
James , this build is certainly not something I would have expected from you . Looks fine ! I hope to see it up close provided I can ever make a RAMS meeting too.
BenDover78
Where'd ya get those 5 lug rims at? I love the truck. Reminds me of my grandpa's 86 Silverado, Sitting over in the building. Its a shame too because it has less then 5,000 Miles.
Joker
Thanks Y'all ... Bob..I'll do a how to as soon as I get some spare time. In the mean time the article was done by Jairus Watson, MCM June/July 2004 pp.30-31. It's done by burnishing aluminum foil on some diamond thread plate with an eraser. He used 3M Super 77 spray glue to install. @ Ed..It's for a community build here on MCM..Tow Rigs/Trailers. I picked up a 3 dollar Bass Boat and Trailer (built up) at the Norfolk show during Sandy. Gave me the incentive to work on it..hahaha Austin..sorry I don't have any info on the truck rims. Got them from a vendor a while back for about a buck fifty. Detailed with a Citadel black wash and some clear red on the hubs. Joker Edited May 1, 2013 by Joker
Joker
Same rims/wheels with pinner white walls. Mocked up on an old project. James aka Joker
Fabrux
The wheels I believe are from the MPC 1988 Silverado kit. James, what did you use for the rear window weatherstripping? I have a bunch of these trucks to build and I'd like to try that trick.
Joker
@ Chris ...thanks for the wheel/rim info and your "series" of truck kit history. As far as the rear window trim..Evergreen #240 half round in .040"/1.0mm. I picked out the thinnest one in the bag.The kits rear cab weather strip was not to my liking..it had thick and thin areas so I blocked sanded the entire area as well as repair the hokey cab corners.Glued the piece on the top of the cab then used a paint brush handle to round out the corners. The last piece added was the bottom trim with the ends cut at a slight angle. Last thing I did was give it a light sanding to flatten it out a bit. Hopes this helps.. Joker
Small update..or what I've been up to.. Did a little bit of work/fun on the GMC interior today. Replaced the buckets with a stash box bench of unknown origin. Bench looked kinda plain so I added a styrene border, bench sat kinda high and got the chop...back side of bench was opened so I scratched built a back cover for it..thinking of adding headrest in the near future. The chassis shocks looked plain Jane to me , so I coiled some wire around them for a coil over shock look.Added straight pins for mounting pegs..On a side note..both axles got reenforced with straightened paper clips and super glue ..they looked weak and Fra-Gil-Le..hahahaha The grill needed a lot of sanding to get is to sit right on the front. Looking at the side profile ...looks like the front axle needs to be moved forward a sconch ( technical term...look it up) to center the wheel. Made a grenade shifter for giggles..not going to use it tho..installing the B&M shifter instead..well after a lil' modification that is. That is all.. on with the copy/paste work... Joker
Chassis pics... Bed cover... Indian Larrys question mark cut out of styrene and glued to top of bed for an embossed look. Tail gate release added to inside of bed...and gas door rescribed a bit higher than stock. Angled styrene added to the underside of bedcover to lock it in place. hood scoop opening extended..
