What Irked You Today?

Walked into one of the schools I work at this morning, and was immediately was asked to meet with the other subs in the office kitchen area. It turned out that a fairly popular English teacher died Friday afternoon of medical causes. Besides being well liked by a lot of students, her husband is a math teacher at the same school. And her father in law subs there quite frequently. In fact he did today. It was a bit of a tough day. To top it off, the teacher who died was a year younger than I.

I didn't know the teacher, Mrs. Young well. But she always seemed friendly to me. In the morning anoucments, they talked and quoted from her favorite book, to Kill a Mockingbird. They read the passage of how it is a sin to kill a mockingbird. Mrs. Young taught at Spring Lake Park High School for about 30 years. She and her husband were very involved in many in school and after school activities. She will be missed.

One positive or negative, depending on how you looked at it, bothered me a bit early on in the day. Mrs. Young mainly taught the 11th and 12th grade kids. So some of the lower grade kids were really not all that affected by her passing. And several were back to living their lives and talking like nothing had happened. At first I thought this was a little disrespectful. But, they are kids. And life does go on. Which is a good thing.

It takes a special kind of person to be a cop. I know I don't have what it takes. But thank God there are people who do have what it takes.

The last two police officers I had to interact with were county detectives. They were two of the smartest and most professional people I've ever encountered, and low-key, realistic, without any swaggering BS. I wish everyone I have to deal with was like that.

Guys (and women) who willingly put their lives on the line every day to try to make the world a decent place for the rest of the citizens are indeed a special breed.

It's hard enough to have any great faith in humanity just watching from the sidelines, but to be immersed, daily, in the worst of what humans do to each other takes a kind of strength I find hard to imagine.

Cops deserve our respect and appreciation 24 /7.

More on that thought...It's rough being a soldier. You risk your life daily, but much of the time, the enemy is clearly defined and you don't usually have to worry too much about being shot in the face by your own countrymen. And when your tour is over, you get to go home to a "civilized" country where nobody's actively trying to kill you.

A cop, on the other hand, never gets to the end of a tour. He never knows for sure who the enemy is, even among members of his own community he's trying to "protect and serve". He never knows which routine traffic stop for an expired tag will end up with some whacked-out psycho cutting him in half with a sawed-off, or when a loser with an imagined grudge will try to sneak up behind him and put a bullet in his head.

I don't know how they can live with that kind of stress every day, day after day after day. 

Those of us who seem to get overwhelmed by having to deal with business problems and juggle picking up the kids and the laundry might take a minute to think what life would be like without the police.

We've always said we (in the law enforcement community) deal everyday with the best people at their worst and the worst people at their best.  Maintaining an even keel and objective perspective, while keeping the safety, peace and dignity of the constituency, and yet remaining safe and healthy for another day, well . . . that's the constant challenge that keeps us getting up every day and 'going to the office.'

On another note, the funeral and interment services are today for the slain officer Ray posted about.  Officer David Glasser, RIP.  He gave his all for his fellow man.

I met him professionally, can't say I knew him or that he was a friend, but he was my brother.  I have friends who knew him well.  Great man, devoted father to two small children, loyal and loving husband to a young woman who is now a widow, and a truly kind and generous friend to many.  A tremendous loss to us all.

Well, you wouldn't believe what kind of imbecile videos I have come across on YouTube. Did you know there seems to be a movement of imbeciles that think the earth is flat? I mean really? Occasionally I would leave a comment on one and the people that reply are dumber than a box of rocks. They think they know it all and they are totally clueless in science and probably can't do any math either. And then there's other nonsense like "rockets don't work in space". AAARRRGGG! If these people are America's future things are going to be pretty sad here. Of course these morons won't go anywhere in life. Well, I just wanted to tell you what irks me. I kept it short.

Yessir, that was a United States Congressman worrying that an island would flip over and sink.

What would a normal driver do? Pull out into the intersection about halfway, then wait for oncoming traffic to clear and make your left turn, or at the very least wait for the light to turn red and then make your left. And maybe the guy behind you can squeeze in his left too, right?

Well, this genius just sat there at the crosswalk. Even when oncoming traffic was completely clear and you could have safely made the left turn walking, he still just sat there. Sat there until the light turned red. When the green arrow came on, thank God he had that figured out and he finally made the turn.

In this case peripheral vision has nothing to do with it. You're looking for oncoming traffic.

I drive for a living & believe me, I see these idiots all day long, every day.

In some intersections where there is no left turn signal, some of these idiots will sit at the cross walk instead of moving out into the intersection when the light turns green!

There are intersections in town that are busy enough where you could easily sit for literally hours without being able to turn left.

Sometimes they just need a gentle "nudge".

Like a full blown laying on of the horn!!

That's true, but at a certain age those "swivel" bearings begin to fail.

I can't count how many times I've been nearly run off of the road by some old fart who can no longer look over his shoulder while changing lanes!

I think it must be more than peripheral vision problems that my friend has. He is more worried about hitting pedestrians, as he lives in DC. He doesn't think he will be able to pass his next eye exam. He is in his 60's and otherwise in good health. I wouldn't know what to do with myself if i couldn't go for a drive whenever I wanted to.

Some folks have Type 2 necks. The ones with their swivel apparatus fused together. 

I used to get angry with others much quicker than I do now. My work has recently taken me to several hospitals for different projects. After seeing many of the folks in there, my life isn't so bad. If it takes me a few minutes longer to get to where I am going, so be it. Much to the surprise of those who know me, I have mellowed with age. Now if that guy would have sat thru the green arrow, I would have gone and knocked on his window. I would be angry with him, but would ask him if he was alright.
