HomerS
O'Charley's - what should have been a nice dinner for Mother's Day was a disaster. We should have known better when the location was not full on a date night (Saturday night). it took almost an hour to get food as we watched other tables be seated, order, get their food and some leave while the six if us were still waiting. When it did finally come, my mother in laws had been sitting somewhere so long the sour cream in the dish for her baked potato had liquified. Its was more of an issue since she had ordered BBQ sauce, not sour cream. My son's french fries were old and had no salt at all. The wife and son's girlfriends father said there food had little flavor. My son's girlfriends food was cold and my shrimp was room temperature. She asked for her salad to come out with the meal which it didnt so we had to chase that down. I sent mine back and they asked if I wanted a new one. I said sure so long as it doesnt take another hour! While we were waiting the waitress blamed a back up in the kitchen but we saw several other tables get their food and some dessert while we waited. She told us we would get a free pie for the delay. I didnt veen have my food back and she came over to ask how the checks were to be split up. Really? You are worried about that!!! We had a manager come over who clearly felt inconvenienced that we asked for someone to come over. They took 1/2 off everyones meal and did give us the free pie. Did I mention that they even screwed THAT up as one of them was wrong.I worked for a another company who owned many Applebee's franchises. If this happened there, the humus would have hit the oscillator on many levels for this kinda service from the waitress, the kitchen and especially the manager. crazyjim
O'Charley's is a pretty large company. Get over to their website and lodge a complaint or take a survey. Most large chains will send you a coupon for a freebie. I had to wait 15 minutes for a couple of tacos at Taco Bell a few weeks ago. I complianed online and was sent a $5.00 coupon. cobraman
Not today but yesterday my wife wanted to go see the movie " Mothers Day ". I won't bore you with the details but let me just say some people have no idea how to act in a movie theater.
SfanGoch
That really sucks. There is absolutely no excuse for such bad service. One thing I do if going to a restaurant and I notice the service is bordering on bad to non-existent is to place a pile of bills on the table in the server's presence when I'm ready to order. I then tell him/her that this is the tip; and, if at anytime during my meal I feel the service doesn't meet my standards, the pile will become progressively smaller. They don't like it; but, I always get good service. They want that tip more than they hate me at that moment.

MeatMan
The weather's improving and the hoopties are out! Up here in Ohio it seems like when the weather breaks everyone that really can't afford a car goes out and buys a car that would never make it through the winter. They drive it until it breaks down or the weather turns. Think they have insurance? Gaaaagh!!

SfanGoch
I just got off the phone with the secretary at my son's school. Yesterday, he brought home a letter regarding his graduation and the associated fee. It includes the following:Cap and Gown (students keep) - REALLY?!? How freakin' magnanimous of you. Diploma with cover - I gotta pay extra for his diploma?!? I thought that the tuition had that covered.Yearbook - So what was the twenty bucks I paid in October for? You're going to charge me twice for the same blasted thing?!?Autograph Album - They get them for nothing and want me to pay for it. Nice.Graduation Gift - Keep it. We're getting him one.Mass Program - Since when does a one page folded printout justify an extra charge?Gift to the Church - Like the priests are going out of their way and have to cancel their bowling league match that particular night and should be taken care of. I thought those two weekly offering envelopes dropped in the ushers' baskets every Sunday covered that. She said that in the 18 years she's worked at the school, I'm the first person to complain. Really? What about the petition that over 200 parents, including myself, signed and presented to the school trustees complaining about all of the extraneous fees they pile on us? See, my son attends a Catholic parochial school. I had to shell out $7000 just for tuition for just this year. That's a thousand bucks more than last year and it's going up another $750 in September. Add in uniforms, supplies, an annual registration fee of $400 (why we're required to pay a registration fee every single year is beyond me. I went to parochial school and there never was an annual registration fee) and other ancillary costs, it comes to over $9K. Plus, I'm hit with what the school calls a "Family Volunteer Fee" of $500. It's actually shakedown money collected from parents who don't perform 40 hours of volunteer service for the school. It's increasing to $750 next year. What pisses me off most about this particular fee is that I'm disabled. I broke my neck in a trucking accident in 2007. I explained this to them and was told that my situation doesn't excuse me from paying. The fee applies to everyone who doesn't perform the mandatory volunteer work. If it's "volunteer work", how the hell could it be mandatory?!?I told the schmucks on the school board of directors five years ago about soliciting private and corporate sponsorships in order to raise funds to operate the school, minimize parents' financial burden and ensure the school's continuing existence well into the future. I explained that my son's former school did exactly that and they receive money from philanthropists, Fortune 500 companies and celebrities. They even hold an annual Scholarship Fund dinner at the New York Hilton to thank the sponsors and to raise money. Last year, that school raised almost $3 million in sponsorships and hasn't increased its tuition in ten years. I contacted the board in early September last year to inquire about progress with the sponsorships and was informed by the president of the board she thought what my son's old school accomplished was impressive BUT soliciting sponsorships entails a lot of paperwork. So?!? That's what your position obligates you to do, find ways of making the school financially solvent and viable. The stinking board wasted five years by doing nothing! Instead, they would rather nickel and dime the parents to death for anything and everything. Another parent I spoke with recently hit the nail on the head. He said that the board is intentionally setting the school up to fail. He said that they are probably planning to close the school in the near future and lease the property to developers who will convert it into high-end apartments, as was done to four other Catholic schools here. I agree with his assessment. Too bad. This is the sole remaining parochial school in the entire neighborhood.End of rant.
Harry P.
Catholic schools everywhere are strapped for cash. Here in Chicago there used to be dozens and dozens of Catholic grade schools and high schools... many (most?) of them have closed due to the combination of low student enrollment and ever-increasing costs. crazyjim
I hear what you're saying, Joe, and really feel for you. I went to Catholic grade school but I have no idea what my parents paid. I wsa baptized, first communion, confirmation, mass every Sunday - all at the same church. The I went to get married there. The pastor got out the big book and looked at my donations at Sunday mass sine I was old enough to go. The church gave us these little envelopes to put the money in. This guy looked at every week for years and years and pointed out the Sunday's I missed a donation. I couldn't believe it! He wasn't going to do the wedding ceremony until I made good on the missed donations. I had no choice but to pay up because I wanted to get married in my church. Dominos nobiscum -pass the basket to the right. The pope/vatican has more money than they know what to do with and want more.
Ace-Garageguy
So, looks like you're fcrewed no matter where you try to get a primary education. There just isn't one to be had from most public schools anymore, and the parochial schools are apparently bleeding the parents white, one little paper cut at a time.Like I keep sayin', something is VERY wrong with jus' 'bout everythin' these days. Harry P.
The parochial schools have to hit the parents with tuition and fees... property taxes don't cover them, they only cover public schools. So it's not like the parochial schools are fleecing the parents, it's more like doing what they have to do to survive. And they're really not surviving. Here several are closed every year due to declining enrollments plus increased costs. There are only a fraction still operating compared to 50 years ago.You have to heat the building and keep the lights on whether you have 500 kids or 100 kids going to a particular school, so as enrollment continues to drop in the Catholic schools (mostly due to demographic changes), their only choice is either charge the parents more, or shut the doors. And the parents who are still sending their kids to Catholic schools are hit twice... school tuition, plus they still have to pay property tax to support the public schools, even though their kids are not in the public schools. There have ALWAYS been difficulties. And a reasonably intelligent society should be able to deal with them as effectively as they did half a century ago.The key words here are "reasonably intelligent".
