Well, there are people who like to complain about everything. And there are people who take the good with the bad. As I get older I try not to complain, mostly because I'm tired of hearing myself complain. As long as the good out weights the bad, things are great.

So many of the posts in this thread (and in other threads) read like grumpy old men complaining about the modern world.   I have to laugh at people griping about hat bills and stuff like that.

What irked me? I just noticed a prayer request here for the first time. I just hope that this forum doesn't become another Spotlight Hobbies forum.  I suspect that certain portion of the forum's members is not religious, and to me this subject would belong under "politics and religion" category (which is not welcome here).

I'm not religious at all, but I don't take offence when people to share their beliefs. A lot of people here add religious notes in their posts or private messages. I don't think it's a big deal and it's never bothered me.

If it helps someone deal and cope with a traumatic experience, then I'm all for it.

Politics though? Nope. Nope. Nope.

I agree wholeheartedly, though I prefer to keep my religious beliefs (or lack thereof) strictly private.

Asking for prayer for a loved one is hardly trying to shove dogma down someone's throat, or sway anyone else's beliefs, and shouldn't engender any offence unless it crosses the line and becomes evangelical or argumentative.

In most cases, the nature of prayer sought or denomination of the poster is not specified, and the requested prayers could just as easily be directed to the Great Pumpkin as to some more traditional deity.

By the way...Merry Christmas. I hope worshipers of snork-tailed-snail-monsters won't be offended by the obvious and blatant reference to a competing "religious" event.

I'll tell ya what irked me today......

I received the annual notice from Social Security telling me that my monthly benefit would be increasing by 2% due to the cost of living increase.  That monthly increase would work out to just under $24 based on what my monthly payment is...

Then it advises that the amount being deducted from my payment for Medicare is increasing by just under $23.  So........... my net increase is a whopping, whole $1.00.  Gotta love it...!!!  :blink::(

The local TV station had a little thing about Christmas Shopping and Mall Parking and the dangers in both. I have noticed a major increase in aggressive drivers on the road in the last 30 days or so. People just don't seem to look where they are driving in the parking lots or the highways. The KC Metro drivers are getting so bad it's like looking at Russian drivers on You Tube.

Well, I found out about this late last week, but have been too irked to type.

I had thought that I got holiday pay from my agency so I was planning on not working Christmas day. Turns out that with this client the agency does NOT pay holiday pay. So I either work or take a hit on my paycheck.  Yet it is a holiday for the client company, as is this Friday.

Not sure yet what I am going to do. We've been working 6 days a week for several weeks. I had to miss a day last week as I felt like I was coming down with something. Was really counting on having Christmas day off just to rest, but we need the money.

I can just show up to work that day if I want to, they are open 24/7. So it might be a game day decision.

GRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(gotta love exclamation points.) :P

I understand your pain, I will not be getting paid for xmas nor new years day and I didn't get paid for the two (thanksgiving) days that the company I am contracted to were closed. It seems to be the norm for temp/contract agencies in AZ (and maybe the rest of the USA) since this has happened to me before with a different temp company.

The carrot in front of me now is that the company I am working at has a strong history of converting it's contract workers (a stipulation I made to the temp agency before I decided to enter this process and this temp agency has done well by me previously).

I suggest keep hunting for a an employer that is a better fit for you while you are still getting paid.

Thanks.

I am hoping to get hired direct, either in the dept I am in or another. I am going to have an interview soon about a job there in the repair side. Would be about a $5 an hour raise.

Most other jobs I am seeing pay way less than what I am making ($19/hour). With the loss of my mother in law's contributions to our income I can't afford to take much less. Definitely can't afford to go back to $12 an hour.

This place seems to really like me, just getting hired direct is not as simple as it used to be. Have to wait for an opening and then apply. In the past I would just get converted after 3 months.

Just would have been really nice if the agency had said no holiday pay with this company. Not even going to go into how bad their medical insurance offerings are.

So as I was saying under "What did you get today?", my best modeling buddy Tom Piagari and I went to Des Plaines Hobbies yesterday and he dropped off his Dodge minivan at the Car-X repair shop to fix a small fuel leak. They said it would be about $650 because it turned out to be a broken fitting on the top fuel pump that fits in the tank, and it would take several hours. Got a taxi back to his place to chill for the rest of the afternoon, then called back around 4:45 to see how they were doing. The phone rang and rang, then went to a full voice mail box. Odd... We checked online for another number, and as we're scrolling down Google, I notice a headline link "Fire engulfs Des Plaines Auto Shop".

"Tom, look at this..."

"Oh, my God, it couldn't be..."

We hopped into my car and drove over there, and sure enough...

(You can see Des Plaines Hobbies in a couple shots. It was already dark by the time we got there, and two snorkels were still pouring water on the place.)

Turns out that gasoline spilled when they were dropping out the minivan's tank to get the pump out, and something set it off. Tom sent me this photo of what's left of it, still up on the lift:

Fortunately nobody in the shop was hurt, so now it's off to deal with the insurance companies...

P.S. Just so you know, Tom OKed me to post all this; he's a member here but doesn't do a lot of postings. Do check out what he has put up, however - some amazing work.

Wow, that's bad news and sorry to hear it as I've known Tom for a long time, either from model car contests or the Old Town Escorts or Lake Michigan Model Car Clubs. I still see him at the Du Page swap meets in Wheaton. Glad no one was hurt in the fire. Was the fire caused by Tom's leaking fuel line, or no one really knows?

It did have a full tank; don't know if it's SOP to remove a tank that's full or if it should be emptied first.

Yes, it should ALWAYS be SOP to drain a tank prior to removing it...as well as keeping any sources of possible ignition FAR away.

The manufacturers, in their non-hands-on, not-car-guys infinite wisdom, however, have nickel-and-dimed the drain plugs off of many fuel tanks, so you're kinda screwed when you go to drain some of them.

Gasoline weighs about 6 1/2 pounds per gallon, so 10 gallons left in the tank is about 65 pounds. Handling that kind of weight overhead, sloshing around, with open lines, is a recipe for disaster.

And a single drop of cold gasoline falling on a hot work-light bulb will crack the glass and start a fire instantly. I've seen fools with electric space-hearers in their bays too.

Every toolbox needs it's OWN regularly maintained LARGE fire extinguisher, as well as extinguishers mounted on lift posts, and on the wall in FRONT of every work bay.

Getting ready to leave for work & finding out It's -15 outside. I have no garage so I'm hoping my car starts.

I left for work this morning and it was 7 degrees outside with some wind.  It was still dark out.  I felt lousy about this until I drove a block and came across the garbage men...  and realized they'd be out there all day.  My lot could be worse!

Well, looks like my nronchitis from March is back, nearly put me in the hospital too.  When I got to the convinient care after work, my o2 was at 87 (not good!), but came up to 95-99 by the time I left!  The Doctor on call told me that if the treatment I recieved didn't take, I would need to go to the hospital!

Good luck with that Joe and take care of yourself, Spring is only 'bout 100 days away.

Thanks Nick, my boss was telling me all day to go see a doctor after work and she was backed up by the supervisor on this (had already been thinking about it since Sunday), especially after I had to stop for air a couple times walking to my desk from the car (I usually take the more difficult spot to get into and out of, which is also close to the door).  She already told me that if I might have difficulty making it in tomorrow morning, just call off and take the time to recover.

C'mon, Ron. You ain't no lightweight transplant. You're from Lawnguylant. You can take it. Back in them pre-climate change ( :D ) 1970s, We used to have keg parties in the dead of winter at Greenpoint Playground, aka "Dupont Park", which was conveniently located right on the Brooklyn bulkhead of the East River. Of course, we would heist 2x4's from the neighboring lumberyard and start fires in a garbage can. We didn't want the beer to freeze. ;)

That the only decent place to get a gyro around here, Souvlaki House, permanently closed right before the holidays irked me. The two Greek guys were in business for over fifty years.
