List of big rig truck engines in kits

Recommended Posts

The AMT california hauler & Pete 352 have 8V71 detroits. I have a few that I wouldnt mind getting rid of. The AMT fords have 3208 Cats, and there was a 12V Detroit in the Tyrone Malone kit that P&P resins sells. The International kits have V8 diesels also, but I doubt thats what your looking for.Thats all I know of V diesels.Hope that helps

This is from another thread, and we have to give Aaronw credit:

AMT American LaFrance Pumper/Ladder/Aerochief - Detroit Diesel 8V71T
AMT Autocar - Cummins NTC250
AMT Bandag Bandit - Detroit Diesel 12V71T
AMT Diamond Reo - Cummins NTD350
AMT Ford C series - Ford SD (401, 477 or 534)
AMT Ford Louisville - Caterpiller 3208 (or the 1160, very similar motors, not positive which)
AMT Freightliner SD/DD - Cummins NTC250
AMT GMC General / Chevrolet Bison - Detroit Diesel 8V92
AMT GMC Astro / Chevrolet Titan - Detroit Diesel 8V71 (old kits optional turbine)
AMT International F-4270 Transtar - Cummins V-903
AMT International Payhauler - Detroit Diesel 16V71
AMT International Paystar - IH V-800
AMT International F2476 - IH V-800
AMT International F2575 - IH V-800
AMT International 4300 - IH V-800
AMT Kenworth Aerodyne - Detroit Diesel 8V92T
AMT KenworthT-600 - Cummins NTA370
AMT Mack Cruiseliner - Mack ENDT676
AMT Mack DM-800 - Mack ENDT865
AMT Mack RS-685 - Mack ENDT675
AMT Volvo N-10 - Volvo F-10
AMT Volvo F-12 Globetrotter - Volvo F-12
AMT White Roadboss - Cummins NTD350
AMT White Western Star - Cummins NTD350
Italeri / Revell of Germany Ford Aeromax 120 - Cummins N14
Italeri Peterbilt 377 - Detroit Diesel Series 60
Monogram Peterbilt 359 - Caterpiller 3406

The N14 above is not an accurate representation, but better resin ones are available. Overall, not many choices for a factory equipped Pete 378, and a V8 wasn't available in a 378, but as a custom truck, anything goes.

Hope this helps, and I bet others can add to the above list.

What's the difference between a Cummins Formula 350 / 400 and an NTC 350 / 400? Are they completely different engines or versions of the same engine?

As far as I know the Cummins Formula is a version of the NTC.

I didn't find one on the list (didn't think I would) but might there happen to be a source for a Cummins V8-185, or something that could be modified to stand in for one?

I'd like to build a Lindberg Dodge as an L-700 with diesel power, and I'm pretty sure there's no Perkins 354 (the other available diesel) in scale. I'd go so far as to scratchbuild one if I absolutely had to, but I can't find any physical measurements for either engine, so if I could start with something in the ballpark I'd be happy.

I think it would be neat to see a Dodge L700 with a Perkins or an early Ford C with an inline Dagenham or Dorset diesel.

I have found a pdf of a Perkins shop manual that gives dimensional data and has a lot of diagrams / photographs.

Here you go.

Allis Chalmers - Plum Crazy Purple

Caterpillar
1145 - New Cat Yellow
1150 - New Cat Yellow
1160 - New Cat Yellow
1673 - New Cat Yellow
1674 - New Cat Yellow
1676 - New Cat Yellow
1693 - New Cat Yellow
3208 - New Cat Yellow
3306 - New Cat Yellow
3406 - New Cat Yellow
3408 - New Cat Yellow
3412 - New Cat Yellow
C5 - C19 - New Cat Yellow with Black valve covers

Edit: I have now found out that Caterpillar Changed the color from the Old Caterpillar Yellow, also known as Hi-Way Yellow, to New Cat Yellow on their machines in June 1979 and that could be the case with the engines too.
So if that's correct the engines would be Cat Hi-Way Yellow from January 1932 until June 1979, after June 1979 New Cat Yellow...except for the cases when the truck manufacturers had their own colors as listed below.
The old Cat Hi-Way Yellow were a brighter shade yellow than the New Cat Yellow wich is more to the mustard shade.

Cummins
H/NH and HS/NHS/NHRS ("Iron Lung") series 672 and 743 cui 50's and early 60's - Cummins Gold close to old Cat yellow
NHC250 - Cummins Beige
NTA370 - Cummins Beige
NTC350 - Cummins Beige
NTC400 - Cummins Beige
NTC475 - Cummins Beige
N14 - Black (cast aluminum valve covers are red and stamped sheet metal valve covers are black)
V-903 - Dark grey or Black
Signature 600/ISX CM570 - Red (may have chrome or black valve covers)

Detroit Diesel
Series 60 - DD Alpine Green or BlueGreen
6-71 - DD Alpiine Green
8V71 - DD Alpine Green
12V71 - DD Alpine Green or Silver (usually turbocharged models)
16V71 - DD Alpine Green
8V92 - DD Alpine Green or Silver (usually turbocharged models)

Chevrolet
1940s to late 1950s - Medium grey
Late 1950s to 1963 I-6 engines Chevrolet engine blue, V-8 Chevrolet engine red (orange)

Ford
Ford 331 Flathead truck engine - Dark Spruce Green
OHV 1954 to 1961 - Red
534SD - Ford Blue

GMC
GMC 1940s - Avacado
GMC late 1940s to early 1950s Dark Green
GMC 1950s Crimson Red
GMC 1960s V-6 Alpine Green, V-8 Red
Turbine - Red

International
V-800 - Metallic blue
Maxx Force - Dark Blue and Silver

Mack - Pre 1990 gold, Post 1990 grey, or blue / grey if equipped with an intercooler
ENDT675
ENDT676
ENDT865
4cyl (Mack AC) - medium grey
Super tip turbine - red
The Maxidyne engine colour was gold, the Maxiydyne truck could easily be identified by the gold dog on the bonnet.
The Thermodyne, Econodyne motors were all painted GREY, these had a chrome dog fitted.
If any other brand of motor was fitted, Cummins,Cat, GM-Detroit, then it would have a chrome dog fitted as well.

Exceptions, some truck manufacturer's use their own colors instead of the engine builders color

AutoCar - White through 1968-69 then manufacturer color

Ford - Black until 1965, Ford Blue until 1982, Ford Corporate Grey

Diamond Reo - Red

International - Red
"International paid Cummins, Detroit and Cat about $25 per engine to have them all painted IH 2150 Red for many years. The practice ended in the '70's, as I remember, and we (International, my employer) pocketed the 25 bucks. Concerning the blue International V-800 in the Paystar, marketing decided that International's new big bore engines should be blue to distinguish them from the competition"

Peterbilt - White through 1984 then engine manufacturer color (there are exceptions as white engines can be found in trucks after 1984 and manufactures colors in trucks before 1984)
Caterpillar was the last engine manufacturer to stop painting them white.

Kenworth - White through 1975 then engine manufacturer color (there are exceptions as white engines can be found in trucks after 1975 and manufacturers colors in trucks before 1975)

Well then I trust it! Dose anyone have any idea what color Dodge painted the engines in their heavy trucks? Were they OEM color?

I'm not 100% sure but I think the large diesels were manufacturer color.

That's kind of what I'm leaning toward. I have a photo of a Dodge Bighorn with the hood tipped, and the engine "looks" white, but you really can't trust 1970s color photography sometimes.

Only exception I see to the color list is the 1693 and prior (older) Cat engines should be "Old" Caterpillar yellow?........................................Mark
