Roadkill's '68 Dodge Charger "General Mayhem"

Recommended Posts

So here it is... I was waiting to start this one, but I just cant wait til my '55 Chevy gasser is done...

Anyway, it started life out as a Revell Dick Landy's '68 Dodge Charger. My friend got out of model building years ago and gave me everything he had. This included a LOT of poorly built cars that someone tried to build when he was out of town, broken cars, and unbuilt cars.

Amongst them was the '55 Chevy that I started, and this Charger which was started and unfinished. The parts are a mix of the parts from this kit and the '67 Coronet kit, and whatever else he gave me... which was a LOT of extra stuff. I'll try and snap a pic of that stuff soon.

So, to preface the build, I'm a big fan of Hot Rod Magazine, and they do youtube videos called Roadkill which are freaking awesome... so, they did a video recently of them building an extremely bare bones, Mad Max inspired '68 dodge charger that was built to handle anything... and here it is in all of it's awesomeness!

I watch Roadkill also when they release the new episodes. I loved this episode and the muscle truck episode. The muscle truck had a killer exhaust note.

Thanks, I need to get back over to my buddy's house where I do my model building and see if I have a 727 Torqueflite that fits the revell 440 engine... I cant remember if I do!

I might need some random parts for this car as many have been lost over the years so I'm sure I'll be posting wanted ads.

I saw that too! I was a little depressed that someone already beat me to it! But mine will be a little more correct.

Most of the parts below I found out last night belong to the Revell '67 GTX.... and so that leaves me with a lot of missing parts for this charger unfortunately :(

So far, I'm missing the interior tub, interior side panels, steering column and wheel, and one front wheel-back. Kinda depressing.I'll have to scour the interwebz and see if I can find some parts on ebay.

I would imagine once Freiburger is able to get it street legal w/ the state of California, they'll do a lot more with it. Which I look forward to.

Well I found a bunch of parts from a few Chargers that I forgot I had, so some of my issues are solved. Also got in my metal grille, B&M rachet shifter, and MSD box for this build.

Roadkill Charger "General Mayhem" update!

So I've been staying near work this week to watch my sisters place, and I'm closer to my friends house where I do my building, so I stopped by this evening and messed around with the Charger for a few hours.

First I made a few body dents and damage to mimic the real thing

Then I removed the cozywings and all the trim around the windows/doors except a spot in the back.

You can see in that picture I also cut the door handle holes out.

Then I waited for my hand to stop cramping and decided to paint the engine black

If you notice, the engine has a 727 torqueflite trans behind it. I robbed it from my Mr. Norm's '68 Dart when it fell apart. And the valve covers are from the revell '70 Challenger T/A because they are taller in the middle and look more like the valve covers on the 440 that Finnegan and Freiburger pull from the motorhome.

I also did the little dent in the front fender. Don't mind the putty.... my dremel went a little crazy when drilling the holes for where the '68 marker lights *should* be.

Next, I decided to tackle the most iconic part of the General Mayhem....

The grille!

I gotta find just the right kind of lights to put behind it now!

In addition I also found the rear taillights and taillight buckets finally, along with an automatic pedal setup from the same Dart, and electric fan from the old revell 32 ford.

Did a touch more work to it last night:

Removed material from behind the driving lights to open up the holes since the General Mayhem did not have any driving lights at all in the valence

Also trying my hand at a little scratch-building for the first time...

I've cut the original door panels out w/ my squadron scribe tool that I picked up last week.. which was worth it! and started making

I'm trying to recreate doors without door panels on them. And it's kinda tough, my hands are cramping, and everything is hard to cut! But it's going to look like this I hope...

2014-01-14%2011.22.22_zpsjltow6rr.jpg

So I cut the original part out, and started making pieces from evergreen

2014-01-30%2021.26.03_zpsxggotusn.jpg

Going to overlay it to hopefully create some depth.

Looks great, but the mesh on the grille seems too large compared to the real car. It doesn't seem wound tight enough or something. I don't really know what to suggest for an alternative though. Maybe someone else would? I'm not wanting to drag you down or anything, because it is your build after all, but I think a more tightly-wound replacement would make it look more like the real thing.

Yeah I said the same thing too, but I couldn't find much out there without spending more than I wanted too. Screendoor mesh would be ideal but its too flimsy. This stuff is perfect. Plus, when I weather it, it will look better.

Has some paint on it. But I don't like how it turned out. Will be taking a purple bath soon.
