When I Was Young & Dumb: Building the Unbuildable '56 Chevy!

Let's see, I graduated in '76, so I would have been 19 in '77, I'm sure we're semi close in age, if so......That has got to be an amazing feat to make the biggest dog of a '56 model look so impessive!!! That is Box Art good!!! Looking at the front end makes me chuckle about how poorly done this kit really is.... :D

I managed to get this one--my idea of The Ultimate Street Freak--together around 1969 or '70.

Testors jade green metalflake! Cool! I had built one similar to this, then rebuilt it in the 80's, using just the body. I've always meant to get back to it and build a nice stocker like the beautiful version built by John.

"Guys who remember this kit from the '60s no doubt remember the cool artwork of a green custom with the door open that tempted them to buy, then discovered the nightmare of trying to build it!"

WAS THIS IT?

Yep...that's it!  I've acquired a couple of the original release '56 kits from the 60's along with the other notorious Revell Tri-Five Chevies...the '55 and the '57... just because I love the box art...along with the original '56 Ford Pick Up, the '31 Sedan/Woody and the more tolerable '29 Model A Pick Up. Have two or three of that Revell '57 Nomad On the Beach as well. All of them are challenging assemblies...if even possible...but one thing they all share is nicely detailed motors, suspensions, some speed and custom options. 20160925_090243.thumb.jpg.abbd31538601205081a7e01c896f7408.jpg

Actually it's the AMT lacquer equivalent, I forget what it was called, but I remember it had that sweet smell.  Current Testor Mythic Emerald is somewhere in the same ballpark.

Yours is cool, too! B)

LOL Ho man do I know just what your saying I am 68 and started building model cars in 1962 in fact the AMT 62 Ford Fairlane was my first build and i have been building all these years but when Revell came out with the first one witch was the 55 Chevy i thought this is great opening door's and trunk well like you i glued everything but the hood closed then next year it was the 56 Chevy same thing and then the 57 Chevy came out again same thing and by that time i was done with anything that came from Revell and did not buy from them for years all i built was AMT MPC Johan that was it I did go back to Revell in the late 80's and now i love there kits but about 15 years ago at a yard sale i found all 3 kits the 55,56,and 57 for $5.00 each i took them I have not built them and never will I just take them out now and then and look at them and shake my head and put them back on the shelf just to remind me even after all theses years I still think I could not put them together.!!!!!

This is the results of the Hot Rod Version . I did this one post AMT '56 & '57 Ford kits . 3 Union '46 - '48 Fords . I did them all since 1984 . In my Youth I was not too fussy about how bodies fit together  Multiple Piece bodies that is . IIRC . I changed the Roof for a '55 HT . I rejected the Sedan for this build . The Factory Accessory skirts were a must . Yes , I know the Quarter Glass did not fully Retract . Bean Counters strike again . Another Tribute build . I have a stalled '55 HT WIP . Body on this Hot Rod Release is soo bad . It .. Thanx
