1/10 scratch built Holden HX Overlander Panel Van

I had to double check the location to make sure that you weren't posing from Australia. Makes an Aussie so proud to see a holden being scratch built. I have dabbled in scratch building and my brother is nagging me for a 1/12 HX panel van sandman. I am pouring over your photo's to see how you did it. I suspect that you might be an expat, and if not, well you bloody well should apply for citizenship. You'd be a shoe in with skills like that. Have you finished it?

Hello Christian! Thank you for the kind words! Still working on it...! Started building the Radiator support panel tonight...lol! Hoping to have the engine bay completed by next weekend..then it's the flooring, dash and seats. Also starting to put together a Shaggin interior for the rear..ha! But will be making it removable, so I won't cover up the stock interior.

I'm not an expat..lol ! I was born and raised in the Caribbean, Island called Trinidad, one of the very few countries that the old Holden's were exported to. Hence my love of these cars. I used to own a Kingswood SL sedan (HX) back in the day...man, I loved that car!

You can always follow along on the link above to the build thread. I will try to post pics here as often as I can...

Sometimes you can pick up a Resin body such as those at www.scaleautomobilia.com.au. Not in any way flogging the company, but I think they are the only ones who carry them at all. I also know of a few very talented Aussie modelers who scratch and cast their Falcons and Holdens. Sadly not a big enough interest for mainstream production but that comes with the territory. There is an Aussie car modelling website - Australian Automotive Model Builders that you can check out if you haven't already for some of the scratch building and heavy modifying of American cars into Aussie Muscle.

Nice work so far. Just curious why you picked 10th scale.

Hey thanks Bob! Well I have been into rc cars for years now, found the Tamiya RC cars an trucks, which were pretty scale hard bodies, then found sites where ppl were scratch building their own bodies and wanted to do the same...lol! Most of the available scale parts (wheels tires etc) are 1/10 scale as well...this car will be an RC.

Hey guys....another small update

No new styrene work as yet....however, this has been bugging me since I bought the engine for this build.....the stock steering servo position! It just takes away all that the engine and tranny brings to the engine bay!

So this is my solution....managed to relocate the steering servo where it will be mostly hidden by the dashboard eventually...and since I will not be opening the doors, it probably won't be seen anyway...this basically has allowed me to add another feature of the 1:1.... A steering box !! And in a similar position as the 1:1...kinda lucked out really...lol

I will probably use a piece of the 3mm (1/8") brass rod to make the connecting rod from the servo to the box....then a regular link rod to the drag link..

Anywho....some pics...watcha think?

In the last 2 pics with the body on the chassis, I had to remove the top connector from the steering box in order to clear the cross brace. The brace will eventually be removed...

Ha! Yes that's always at the back of my mind! However, I find myself driving my cars less over the past couple years...and when I do, it's either indoors or on relatively flat terrain where there's less chance of a spill! For me now it's more about the build...I like that the larger scale allows you to have working features that are closer to the real vehicle, like working suspension and steering etc. for example, for this car I picked up some 1/18 scale hood hinges that work (made of metal with springs), and while 1/18 may sound like they are too small for a 1/10 hood, they actually look pretty good! The plan is to have a locking mechanism that's servo activated to remotely 'pop' the hood...lol!

Another example of what can be done with large scale... My Rothmans Ford Escort MK2 Rally Car..the body is lexan that I bought from a dealer in Finland, but the chassis is all homemade. RWD with a live axle mounted on leaf springs, the motor up front in the traditional 'north / south' orientation mated to a modded tranny connected to axle with a driveshaft located in the trans tunnel ! Also has working front disc brakes that are servo activated. The interior is all made from styrene except the seats...lol!

  • 3 weeks later...

Finished the faux battery top... Covers the servo nicely and is removable. As you can see the 'terminals' are the bolts that hold it in place...which means that later on when I decide to detail out the engine, if I'm doing a harness the wires can be attached to the battery...lol!

What a unique idea for the radiator!

Hey thanks Draggon! However, I can't take credit for it....was pointed in that direction by another builder on Scale4x4RC....

Hey guys...another small update...:D

Got the radiator completed.... Made the mounting brackets like the 1:1 , but mounted it a little different...lol! Made it so it's removable, so when it's time to paint it can come out easily, get painted and the remounted...:D

So...gonna try to focus on getting the dash sorted..

Some pics....
