Update: 2015 Hellcat destroyed, now up for bid...

Recommended Posts

UPDATE: Colorado State Patrol have revealed that the driver of the crashed 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat was 34-year-old Lance Utley. He was traveling along Riverdale Road with two passengers when he lost control of the car and crashed into a tree. Authorities have confirmed that there were no injuries, and that they are charging the driver with careless driving.

That could be repaired right?

Or is the estimated cost of repairs higher than the value of the car?

I guess the insurance company will pay for a new car.

Insurance companies will typically pay up to around 70% of the value of a car to repair it, almost never any more than that. Add up all the parts (large and small), and a LOT of labor (plus refinish materials and time), and consider the main structure is probably tweaked beyond cost-effective and safe repair too, and you have a "total" loss. The insurance will most likely replace the car, and try to attempt to recover some money by selling the remains for salvage.

a former employer of mine bought a nearly-new Jag that had been totalled with insanely low miles; he had heard the engine running at the auction house. get the rolled-up, not one-usable-part hulk stripped down and find every engine mount pad sheared off the block....... yeah, he got it welded up, but had to disclose that fact when selling it..... knocked the value WAAAAAAAAAY down.

The thing is with that hard of a hit he could very well of damaged the engine and in turn the transmission.

That's what I've seen in the reports about it, that the core support got shoved back far enough to get into the block. I saw something similar happen to a '71 'Cuda convertible 383 car. Head on into a telephone pole. Not sure how much damage the engine took, but the impact cracked the trans case and bent the rear axle. Car was total loss.

Why would you be running that ride on a twisting road anyway. It's made for the straight run. There was a similar vid of a Corvette a guy was test driving and he totaled it too! As it's been said many times in this post. A man has to know his limitations. I would add to that also the cars limitations as well.

Yeah, this is going to be how about 80%* of Hellcats meet their fate. They should come with factory-installed dash cams, if only for the entertaining YouTube videos.

*The other 20% being immediately mothballed by idiots looking to sell them for huge profit in 25 years.

Part of it is the weenie 275 tires on it. Won't be the last hello kitty we see piled up. Google wrecked c7 z06. Same thing. Takes some skill to drive a car that can't turn. Lol. I must say though it's amazing what you can get used to. I thought my 540 hp shelby was a handful until I got my 14. It was crazy! For a couple months, now it's 740 at the tires and it's not enough!!

No broken glass, doors seem to be closed could be a nice parts car, or end up as a drag car .

Back in the seventies Ohio did not require insurance. My brother showed up at work to hear about the newly wrecked Camaro sitting in the lot. Seems the guy pulled out in front of someone as he was leaving the dealership. Totaled with no insurance to cover the cost. Talk about low miles.

I saw a similar thing around 1980. I was in a gas station across the street from the Chevy dealer. I heard a horrible sound and looked up to see a Camaro rubber nose flying in the air. A girl had just taken delivery of a new Camaro, was leaving the dealership and was sticking out of the driveway maybe an inch or two too far. A truck passing by caught the edge of the nose and ripped it right off. She was devastated, back tires never got out of the lot!

The worst one I saw personally was when Ford still manufactured cars in Edison, NJ. I used to pass there on my way to work. One day I witnessed an accident where one of the transporter trucks failed to negotiate the left turn onto the highway, climbing the end of the divider and putting the trailer on it's side. Brand new Ford Escorts all over the place! Poor little buggers didn't even get out of the shadow of the factory!

  • 1 month later...

This kind of idiot destruction of beautiful machines by skill-free but monied drivers is nothing new, and will continue as long as there are fast cars for sale to big-headed morons.

It used to be a regular occurrence each year at track days nearby for at least one doctor / lawyer / stockbroker to stuff his shiny new 911 backwards into the Armco, because he hadn't bothered to learn a rear-engined car's handling quirks.

One day in late '86. a fool in a brand new Jag XJ passed me on the outside of a decreasing-radius exit ramp, only to let the rear end come around on him and slide it sideways into a light pole as I motored on by. Horseshoed it. Pretty impressive, dude. Guess you showed me in my old car, huh? And I've seen fools try to make panic-stops in ABS equipped BMWs, Mercs and Ferraris, thinking the brakes would save them when the laws of physics said there was simply no way to stop the car in the space they left themselves.

I don't have a clue as to how stupid douche-sacks can make enough money to buy these cars, but as long as bozos think the skill to drive the things is automatically conferred on the guy who signs the check, the incidents will continue.
