Wow! A great review. And a great build. I had not run across this video in my search for info on this kit. I’m pleased to see what to look out for when building the kit. Hopefully helping me avoid pitfalls when I get around to building mine. And its nice to see it can be build into a fairly nice looking representation of a 917.

As I write this I’m finishing up my 1/32 scale AMT 917/10 kit. And your right, it is a very good kit. I’m applying Indycal decals to make in to George Follmer’s, Porsche 917/10-003. The RC Cola version. Great decals by the way. They are going down great. Giving me no troubles so far. 

I bring this up because you question the difference in quality of the two 1/32 Porsches? MPC’s 917K vs AMT’s 917/10. It’s my understanding they are from two totally different sources. MPC’s was a re-boxed Airfix kit. AMT’s is a kit was tooled up by Matchbox. If I’m wrong on this, somebody needs to correct me.

I did not try watching it with subtitles. I didn’t even think of that. An interesting video. Again not a great one. But, the only one out there, that I’ve found, looking at this kit.

Very nice. You know Chevrolet almost offered a Monte Carlo convertible in 1970. In fact, Chevrolet showed a drawing/painting of the Monte convertible in one their 1970 accessory brochures.

This my Revell ‘64 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt. The reason I posted it here instead with the drag racers, is this car is really not intended to be use on the drag strip. It’s a sleeper/street racer. And sometimes grocery getter. A “plane Jane” car that most people would notice until it was too late. The only clue is the 427 Thunderbird engine badges on the front fenders.

Yea, I saw the video you linked to, earlier today. Not bad. But, I had a bit of a hard time understanding what the presenter was saying. Other than that, it was an okay review of the kit’s history and contents. Not great. But, one of the few reviews out there that I too can find on the kit. 

I’d love to see more reviews. And perhaps a build up or two.

Thanks to Tom for kindly inviting me to his shop, and letting me see this magnificent car in the flesh. Plus seeing his beautiful 1963 Thunderbird convertible again. And an interesting future project he’s working on. That I’m looking forward to seeing done in the future. 

 

As a follow up to seeing the car above. That afternoon, I got curious and started doing more research on the XM Turnpike Cruiser. I discovered there was a pamphlet that Mercury made out on the car. I assume to be given out where ever the car might appear. I have several pamphlets on other show cars from the period. So I than went on eBay to see if I could find one. And there were several available, so I bought one. It came in today’s mail, and I thought I would share it with you.

I suspect your correct. And I think the folks at AMT were right for doing it that way. It looks great, and different from Cal Drag Combo. Plus when this kit came out, I knew nothing about towing trailers with cars on them or not. It looked good to me then. And from an “art” perspective, still looks good now.

I just ordered this kit from a vendor on eBay. From what little I can find on the web, it’s a reboxing of an Airfix kit, and looks okay. When I get the kit, I’ll open the box and show the contents here. In the mean time, I’d be interested in hearing other’s opinions on this. The good. The bad. Or the ugly. 

I have ordered Indycal decals for this kit. Gulf-Porsche #20, raced at Spa. As I don’t like what I’ve seen of the decals included with the kit. Nor do I trust them after almost 50 years.

I’ve towed a car or two on both trailers and car dollies back in my day. The thing that bothers me on the above box art, wouldn’t towing the Chevelle backwards on the trailer like that, give the tail wagging the dog effect? At the suggestion of a boss one time, I was to tow a car on a dolly backwards. I could barely leave the lot and a vehicle I was towing start wagging back and forth. Which in turn started effecting the tow vehicle’s handling. “The tail of the dog, wagging the dog.” Enough to scared me into refusing to do the run. Our service manage then tried it, and came back and said he wouldn’t do if he were asked, either. The weight bias with the engine facing backwards is what caused the problem. Now this was with using a car dolly. Maybe with a double axle trailer it would be different. But, having towed cars with both open and enclosed double axle trailers in the past, I doubt it. Still, even if it wouldn’t work in real life, the box art above still looks great. And I’d buy one if reissued.

Thank you Doug. It is fun to get a “redo” on kits one built as a kid. And hopefully do a better job with them.

Aside from that, I've not found many colour photos of the real Gurney car; I'm unsure what colour seat it's supposed to have.

Another site I’ve been to in the past. And another good one worth sharing with others here. Still questioning the red seats. But, that’s okay. I’ve thought about buying their decals. The price seems right. And from what I’ve seen their quality is good too.
