Need a Paystar grill
falcongeorge replied to falcongeorge's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Any luck on info on the fiberglass hood paystar? Thats what I need the extra grill for, to make the extra little piece at the bottom. Heres a rough guess on where I am gonna have to cut. Also have to saw the front fenders off and add a pie-shaped piece to the inside to bring the width back. -
I need an extra paystar grill. Doesn't need to be in great shape, as I will be stripping the chrome, discarding the lettering across the top, just cutting off the top and bottom, and glueing them together. Anyone have an old one in their parts box they are willing to part with?

When I look at the photo of the Sourkraut piece, it doesnt even look like there is a raised molding around the window. You could probably even skip that step, which would make it REALLY easy. -

I dont have a Revell KW kit handy, but here is how I would come up with the dimensions. You have a nice, clear photo of the Sourkraut piece right? Print it out. Now you measure across the hole in the back of the Revell cab you have, then you measure across the cab insert in the photo from the sourkraut site, right? Calculate the percentage needed to increase the size of the photo of the insert from the sourkraut site to make it big enough to fill the hole in the kit cab, then measure the window opening in the photo, and multiply those dimensions by the same percentage #. Easy, no? -

This piece is so easy to make. Just cut a piece of .040 sheet styrene that fits the hole in the back of the cab, cut a hole in it for the back window, take a piece of .030 evergreen half-round, glue a bit of it down with liquid cement and let it set. Once the end is firmly glued down, work your way around the window with more liquid cement. To form the corners, apply the liquid cement directly to the half-round to soften it so it doesnt break, and pull it around a drill bit that matches the radius at the corner of the window openings. I have used the same technique many times to make chrome trim or window moldings for car kits. You should be able to turn this piece out in an hour, start to finish. Beats waiting for a month to get a resin piece... -

Looks like it need to be tapered in approx. 3/8" per side! YIKES! -

the one fairly glaring issue here is the "international" lettering. It should be sunken, but on the ERTL 4300 grill and the paystar grill, its raised. Its sunken in the S-series ERTL grill, but its considerably larger & wont work. I think its something I will probably just have to live with. Its also incorrect for the 4300 & the regular paystar kit, and everyone seems to be unaware of it, so I guess its not that big a deal, but its the kind of thing that bugs me. -

You know, when I look at these, the nose looks quite similar to the 4300. The nose tapers more and is a bit narrower at the front, the fenders are wider, and they use a paystar grill. I think I might try converting my 4300. If Cargo Star can come up with some dimensional info for the nose, I will take a run at it. -
The captions on the photos on hanks website say its a "210". It would not be a very difficult conversion. Use the hendrix cab from Spaulding Shipping, a set of fenders from a Paystar with some extra tread-plate, and make a grill shell and butterfly hood. Yea, I saved that photo for a reason. LOL. I have NO TIME for model building right now, its spring so yardwork time, & I have a 1-1 model kit of a Chevy II out in the garage, and a 14 month old daughter. but hopefully, there will be some more free time soon.

WOW! Some great contest photos in there as well Daniel! Nice and big too. Good stuff. I am gonna try to round up some reference material & take a run at the Pacific nose. -
Rivet detail
falcongeorge replied to whale392's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I have a AMT small window Pete cab that I will be pulling a mold off of that will need rivet detail, these will probably come off in the RTV. Maybe I should drill holes and use .010 styrene rod. Sounds like some real misery... -

Yup, thats it. And yes, those things are real beasts! LOL! Maybe I am bias because I grew up in BC, but I think the NW has by far the coolest trucks of anywhere else. You have have those Michigan centipedes,Pacifics & Hayes are REAL trucks! -

Someone used to do a cab conversion for a Pacific, but IIRC it was the Pacific steel cab, not the international cab, and it was for one of the more heavy-duty off-road models. Pacific started using the International cab on some trucks in the 1970s, with the Pacific cab as an option. -
I did once send some stuff off to be cast by someone, wound up with no master, no parts, and no credit for the master. No reflection on you whatsoever, I know there ARE honorable casters out there, but that only has to happen once to leave a REALLY bad taste in someones mouth. If I do either the Pacific nose, or the fiberglass SFA paystar nose, I will probably cast it myself.

Thanks Cargostar. You seem to be the "go-to" guy for binder info. -

Is the grill surround on this hood the same width as the one in the kit? It looks like the grill itself is about the same width, but the surround is maybe about 3" narrower? Then you cut the "INTERNATIONAL" badge off the top of the grill and move it down into the top of the grill itself, so its flush across the top? Do you have any photos of the top of the hood? -

Or heres another possible nose conversion for the Paystar, although I think the Pacific would attract more interest. -

Thanks for the info Dan. I had pretty much figured this particular truck had a scratchbuilt nose, as it says that on the slip in the photo. I was more wondering if anyone was doing the nose in resin, and maybe hoping to spark some interest in someone doing it. Really nice build your friend did, by the way.
