  1. >AS MANY OF US OLD BIKERS SAY >"WE DON'T CARE HOW THEY DO IT IN JAPAN" Sonny Barger, in his biography, "Hells Angel", says that if there were japanese bikes around back then like they are now, no way the Hells Angels would be riding Harleys. And if Sonny sez it, then I believe it! PS: owner of 1:1 Nissan 240SX, Mazda Miata and Toyota Land Cruiser (with GM 383 HT motor)
  2. >There are only a few companies that actually make it, and then they co-brand it to several specific brands. Figure out who makes Tamiya spray paint, and then >buy the cheaper off-brand, but just as good stuff. i am with you on this sometimes, but i think in this case, tamiya does actually make its own paint, or at least formulates it themselves. they are a pretty well vertically integrated company. now they might also sell it to other companies, and possibly someone might sell it cheaper that way, but i have never heard of it.
  3. those decals look retro kool, i remember this kit and that tonneau from when i was a kid. im gonna have to grab one of these.
  4. dispatch from Rockville Maryland: Tamiya 87044 Fine Surface Primer L (White) 180ml It is sealed in plastic wrap. Local pickup only. Please email and arrange for the pickup at a local public place. Cash only. end dispatch pickup at a public place, bring cash. pretty sketchy i would say. now we got a black market in primer!
  5. >The body panels on the Daytona and '66 Sebring car from the rear window back were just body thickness open areas. If you are going to do a detailed version >the inside was bare fiberglass ah, that was exactly what i was after. thank you!
  6. unfortunately, looks like they might be out of stock on the size we would probably want: 52654 Small Convex Profile Sanding Grips - Set of 4 Oversold Reserve Yours Today $5.69 Pack
  7. i am not 100% on this but isnt the little deuce pretty much a shrunk down big deuce? maybe not in the exact details but it always looked pretty close to me. what i mean is there are a lot of big deuce photos to use as reference etc. the little deuce is pretty rare; ive been looking out for one (but for a reasonable price, or, like you, a collection of parts to go with my box sorry i couldnt offer any more help and i hope my suggestion wasnt too obvious. you should start a thread in the workbench section to follow your progress
  8. >stupid california i wish it would sink already its called "welcome to california". and i live out in the sacramento river delta and it IS sinking! the thing i cannot figure is that if it were just california that was the problem, wouldnt they be selling the product in other nearby states? not to mention over the internet but maybe not to cali addresses? and i take it its not even available in japan? if they really are just relabeling it, its hard to believe there is no product on the shelf just because they arent labelled properly. you would think there would be relabeled stock in stores and the general supply chain the very next week (earthquakes and tsunamis excepted of course, and maybe that was part of the problem). personally i think they are reformulating their paint and it might not be the same again. or i guess it could end up better somehow. then the question comes up...would the reformulation be for the entire world, or would they have to produce two products, one for the world and one for the USA? seems like a lot of trouble just for the USA or maybe just the california market.
  9. and here i thought this thread was a poll. i wouldnt vote in it anyway!
  10. its really a drag this stuff isnt available in buzz cans. i wonder what the deal is, maybe it wont stay mixed well enough? i think they could make (another) mint off the paint if it were available to us non-airbrush painters.
  11. that is one of the koolest models i have seen in some time. great job!
  12. well my personal feelings on issue #158 (which i have not yet seen by the way, so its obviously a pretty hollow opinion) is that i am overjoyed to see my lakester in there. excellent piece of writing to accompany it too if i may say so myself! actually i do enjoy articles on things way out of my realm of interest like tractors and diecasts...i find i can appreciate the work put into something without really loving the subject matter and hardly an article passes where i dont learn something, some new technique or tip.
  13. using tamiya's clear red works really nice over many base colors, plus it sprays on evenly and predictably. i shot it over mica red on a red primer and it came out looking real deep and nice. in my experience way easier and more forgiving than those testors candy colors in cans.
  14. yeah i agree on the krylon (crystal) clear: if you put that stuff on too fast, it will definately destroy especially if there are semi-dry enamels beneath it. unless like you say you want to use it as a "barn find", i think a time in the brake fluid (i dont think CSC will cut through the clear) will bring it back to base. then get a food dehydrator to dry your paint in...up there in vermont i bet the air is pretty moist to begin with and testors enamels are really slow drying...a dehydrator will cut that time down to a day or so.
  15. yeah i have to agree, Revell has really been putting out some great new tool models the past couple years.
  16. yeah i notice the seller you bought from has a bunch for sale, 4 at a time or 8 at a time. at $10 for four motors, with shipping PAID, its a bargain. im going to go 20 on eight of them. the seller must have bought up a warehouse of unsold stock or something.
  17. i need one of those cadillac motors, actually i need the trans and especially the linkage and shift handle. arent the allisons AMT and not Revell? i think i got a few of them if you have the caddy motor, pm me please!
  18. >put a red rag in the gas filler the classic "molotov cocktail" gas tank cap. love it!
  19. i was thinking i had wetsanded some but i guess not or i would have remembered the experience! truth is i mostly use it on bodies just to cover decals if i havent used clear or if i applied them over the clear.
  20. >painjob very appropriate typo there bob, describes about 60% of my attempts perfectly. my friend who is a 1:1 painter has a sign over the door to his paint booth: "More On?". thats appropriate too as thats how i ruin most of my bad jobs: think just one more coat will do it. and bob yeah you can use water on future, it has no effect, at least as far as i know, its not water soluble. ammonia and products that use ammonia will remove it clean but not water, at least not after its dry. and its pretty amazing for a top coat but its hard to believe until you actually see it work, even applied by brush.
  21. i agree with mark except if you just burn through the clear while you are achieving the flat surface youre looking for, you dont need to strip and start over. just clear it again and this time let it flow out well by putting just that perfect amount on (yeah easier said than done sometimes, but i generally kind of overdo it and let it flow down and preferably in a temp of about 80 to 85 degrees after warming the paint can to about 110 or so) and hopefully you will end up with a finish that doesnt need extensive polishing a second time. the secret is to get the color flat before shooting the clear. if on the other hand you burn through the color while polishing then, yep, its time to strip and repaint.
  22. >It's about as classic and iconic an engine as any. yep those twin OH cam covers really scream JAGUAR. though didnt E types come with SU carbs and not webers?
  23. this may seem petty and shortsighted, but i have a major problem with anything that contains the word "twit" in its name. just sayin...
  24. thats killer! and i take it thats your 1:1 it is posed on? i have a 1:1 96 240sx, bought new when they were practically giving them away but i always loved the look of the first series as well, which resemble this 180 quite a bit. one question i have and im sure i could research it myself but since you have one maybe you know, ive read about a "lazy eye" conversion kit for the headlights and i have also seen a number of these cars with one headlight halfway open and one closed, kind of "winking" at you. looks kinda funky but it does grow on one. so the question is, is that the "lazy eye" effect they refer to? because it does kind of look like one eye is open and the other, the "lazy" one, closed. i also have a 1:1 series 1 mazda mx-5 (miata) and the same sort of kit is available for that though i have never seen one in real life. just curious. yours is looking great! as for "respect", i give them a lot. way more than say another shoebox chebby which if i never saw another in my life i wouldnt miss it a bit.
