  1. making molotov cocktails! PS this is fun!
  2. Dude, really? Cali is famous for so much stuff, but that is probably because it is so darned big. Where to start with obscura. Home of the SR-71/ U-2(Beale AFB). More fresh produce grown here than any other state. California produces more rice than any other state except Arkansas, which is really great for duck hunting. Another little known fact. California is the #3 oil producing state. Yup, the LA basin is full of the stuff. There are more active duty and reserve personnel from California in the military than any from any other state(as of 2017). Just a couple of little know bits and pieces.
  3. and NCC-1701 Enterprise
  4. This advise is IMHO mean as the last step in finishing your model. Black paint or ink in the panel lines just stands out too unrealistically. Doing it before color darkens them just a little and hides any uneven filling by your final color. Much more realistic.
  5. Hummmm, I never would have thought of that.
  6. Frenching, isn't that when you dip the body in beer batter and deep fry it? Or was that tempuraing if you use Panko. Either way the heat kind of distorts the body!
  7. Dave, just curious how one abused the ability to delete your own posts or threads? Not sure how that would happen.
  8. "Collector Kit" is kind of an oxymoron to me. It is only collectable to a collector and then it is only worth what someone will pay for it. So I guess it comes down the the question of, are you a collector or a builder? Once you answer that question, the answer to your first question becomes clear.
  9. As many of you know my favorite place to go for all things airbrush is Coast Air Brush in Anaheim, Ca(yea, just across the 5 from Disneyland). Just about any time anyone here has a question about an airbrush, I refer them to Coast and there is a reason. These guys know what they are doing and can explain it. I am not trying to push a retailer or their product but here is a live feed that they do from time to time with a bunch of different techniques. About half way through they show Createx paints being used on car models. You all may find it interesting. Moderators: Please remove the post if it doesn't meet guidelines. Thanks!
  10. It would be interesting if you would follow up with a different thread. Kind of give us a comparison and your opinions. Thanks!
  11. That is why I said supposedly. For the metrically challenges that would be about 5/16"X 3/4". This is still pretty darned small and and in most cases, it would be about what looks right. If you are going to paint it(say to make it flat black) then the dimensions shrink even more. In modeling, the old Mark I eyeball is more important that all the micrometers in the world.
  12. Ok, I finally found the KA stuff I mentioned. This is 1:24 scale supposedly. http://ka-models.co.kr/?product=hexagon-pattern-mesh-a-0-43mm-x-0-37mm This is the hexagon pattern. They do square, round and diamond as well. It is really nice stuff.
  13. Ok, this is a good example of a car not worth restoring used to create something else. As I recall, this cars body/chassis was so messed up it just couldn't be properly fixed as a restoration and the engine/transmission was not original. You basically had about 1/3 original sheet metal. Chip made it real clear at the start that this was a custom build using what was left to create a usable car. I'm good with this the same way I would be with a custom 49 merc or Model T hot rod. Once it is junk, make what you want of it, instead of hauling it to the junkyard to be scraped or rot away. I say good one Foose!
  14. There have been a number of companies that have made different photoetched mesh sheets. KA and tritool(hasegawa) come to mind but I can't seem to find it, sorry. Just knowing it is out there and who made it is a start though.
  15. Boy was I at a loss on this one! Never would have thought of the middle east. The front should have been a giveaway that it was fiberglass. You are really digging deep to find the last two BU cars. They have really taken a beating from the ugly stick!
  16. I love Porsche's! Ever since I bought a new 1974 911, back when I was a young pilot in the Air Force. Gobs of cornering, instant response to drive input, easy to drive, hard to drive well, unique sound out of that flat 6. Hated the cost and frequency of repair. Parts are stupid expensive. Parts just didn't last a long as they should(to some degree due to living in northern Michigan). Would own another in a heartbeat if I thought I could afford to maintain it. As someone else said, there are some Porsches that need to be preserved like the Carrara's, RS's and RSR's, early 930's and others, but not all of them are worthy of the effort, time and expense. What happens to those cars after they have outlived their parts really doesn't matter. If you love one of the just plain old cars and want to take care of it, then good. Go for it! But some just aren't worth it. Want to convert it to something more to your liking then go for that. Every car of a particular marque is not worthy of preservation, so sacrilege? No, not hardly.
  17. One thought on tamiya paints. I use the heck out of them but to my eye the flat, semigloss and gloss black comes out of an airbrush one level of gloss up. In other words, flat seems to have just a touch of a sheen to it and looks more like semi gloss at the model level. Semigloss seems to be more like what you would call gloss in an engine bay. Gloss is to shiny for the engine. It is more of an exterior color.
