Experimenting With Leather
Straightliner59 replied to Straightliner59's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
That is beautiful work! I was drawing on my memories of learning rudimentary leather work in seventh grade! That was a little while back!- 21 replies

Getting ready to run the brake lines. The rotors and calipers are installed, and the wheels slip onto the axles. I finished and installed the front nerf bar, as well. Seemed like a good time to set everything together, and see how she looks. I have a bit of detail painting to do, yet. I think I like it! Critiques, questions and comments are always welcome. Thanks for looking!

That looks cool, Snake! I built one back in the early '80s. I wish I still had it. I had taken it apart to redo it, and it disappeared, somewhere over umpteen moves.

You might also consider their promo models, instead of actual kits, if you're interested in something like the AMX or Maverick. That's what I did. Like Claude, above, I figure to use them for either a curbside, slammer, or fully detailed, those provide a good starting point.

Super Clean, for sure. Cleans it right down to the plastic. -
*Hoosier Drag Slicks & Front Tires*
Straightliner59 replied to Zippi's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
That is certainly true! I haven't seen slicks on Fireball's site, but his tire decals are fantastic! -
Thank you, Mike. I guess I have used it, before, on my '32 modified roadster. It worked better, there, since it was a cylindrical tank. I had it posted on the old site. Thanks, so much, my friend! I ended up using Tamiya metallic blue for the shocks. I thinned it with window cleaner and shot it through the airbrush. I was surprised at how quickly it cured! When I got home, this morning, I got the front nerf bar soldered together! Thank you both for looking and commenting! I appreciate it!

You might try sanding the lettering from a set that's the right size, and apply decals for the lettering. Joseph, at Fireball likely has some. If so, I can guarantee you that will work, beautifully! -
Scratchbuilding Chassis
Straightliner59 replied to John Pol's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
When I build a brass chassis, I assemble and solder it while pinned to a slab of balsa. I mark all the critical points with a pencil--wheelbase, centerline, track width, etc. -
I rebuilt the shocks, and painted them to match a set of old Gabriels I found online. The suspension is complete except for some detail paint on the shocks, and new bolts for the front shocks. I will machine something for the upper bolts, as those also mount the nerf bar. I still have to drill and paint the calipers, and install them. I'm trying to decide how to set up the brakes. Most of the dirt track supermods appear to have a hand brake. Paved track versions don't appear to, but, I can't find a cockpit photo that shows the pedal/master cylinder assembly. I'll probably just go with what I already know, where that's concerned. It's getting pretty close to being on the wheels, for good! As always, comments, critiques and questions are welcomed! Thanks for looking...

Thanks for the history on this, Bernard. You have to know that one of these will find its way to my display case! -

My guess would be it was running /XS, as pictured, here. -
Main front suspension components are painted and installed. Here it is, on the wheels, for the first time since initial construction and design. Final ride height is set. The rear is sagging, momentarily, as the shocks aren't installed, here. I still need to build the rear brakes, and paint the front ones. Questions, comments and critiques are always welcome. Thanks for looking!

Here's my setup. As a renter, it needs to be temporarily permanent. Although I plan to replace the flex across the top of the window with rigid pipe, it draws wonderfully, as it is. The only time I experience any lingering paint odors is when I need to change the filter. I can remove the installation, and return everything to normal, in five minutes, or less. It's secure, as well. If anyone would like further details about the installation, please ask!

I got an assortment of AWG numbered bits to replace some broken/lost bits from my drill box. Earlier in the week, I received a Revell Snap-Tite '57 Chevy from one purchase and one of the '67 'Vettes, because I had raided the cross-ram manifold from the one I had, for my Supermodified.

Lacquer Thinner versus MEK
Straightliner59 replied to Foghorn Leghorn's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I just keep a small can of Weld-On 4 around. It works great, for most styrene/styrene bonds. It's also much less expensive than dedicated hobby cements. -
That's pretty dang cool! I have built two of his Goldenrod kits. Lots of fun! It might be a good candidate for the 24 hour build!

Man, there is a ton of nail stuff that is useful for modeling. I have been looking at some of these decals, as well.
