Ford Race Car Hauler
landman replied to landman's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I must have bent 6 feet of paper clips without getting one hinge right. Then, as I was rooting around in the '56 Ed Roth pickup kit, I found these. Looks like I can make them work here. I think I'll also break out my Smooth On casting stuff and attempt to make a few sets. -
Assembled the three items I got from Scale Equipment the other day. I had built the CAT 1160 for the race car hauler but it won't fit under the N600 cab so I made it a dolly and it will reside here until it finds a truck to go into. In looking for a large Ford gas engine to replace the CAT I found one in the Ed Roth '56 pickup kit, except it is a 292 and wasn't found in trucks. So it'll go here too. Started on it. Also noticed a mistake while preparing the photos for posting. That is easily fixable.\

I was at Home Depot the other day but forgot to look. Will check next time. But I've looked on the internet for retailers that carry it in Canada and stumbled unto a forum where guys say it can't be found.

Just bought a "correct" 534 on eBay from a junked C600. The cat is going into my background dio until further notice. It'll even get its own custom-built engine stand. -
Thanks guys. I think I will use the X-20 of which I have two bottles for reducing. It's the cleaning I'm worried about. It takes large quantities and I was thinking of lacquer thinner until I read somewhere that it can damage some of the seals. I'll ask Badger directly to see what they say.

Started mocking up for fit. In order for the wheels to be centered in the wheelwells the cab has to move back about 4 scale inches from the Louisville location. I'll also have to notch the front of the frame and move the rear cab mount. tried it with the interior in place to see. The front cab mounts will work where they are but will need some adding to, either on the mount itself or inside the cab. So that is feasible. What isn't is using the CAT. It just won't clear the tub. Hood's too short. So back to Ben's suggestion of using a big Ford V8. They ran FT 361 & 391. Looked through my stash and the only thing close is the Thunderbird V* from the Ed Roth 56 pickup kit. I wonder if that's a 390? -
He sent some photos of his progress. It will definitely be a better roof with the correctly shaped window openings.

I know, at $150 a litre.,
-
Mike, do you use it to clean the brush too?
-
I've been told lacquer thinner "eats" the little O-rings in the airbrush.
-
I've read several threads and comments about using denatured alcohol for this. It is next to impossible to find here. The closest thing is Methyl Hydrate. Would that be a good alternative? If not, what else would work? I'd like to stay away from lacquer thinner if I can. It is not good in the airbrush.

Same here. I have just finished my 67 Mustang convertible using a Fastback kit combined with a resin coupe. I'm still working on a replica of my 34 Chevy 5WC using a 35 diecast convertible and a 34 Ford roof which itself will be modified by some handmade widow openings. I have a 53 Studebaker Starliner which will be the basis of a 64 GT Hawk I once owned using the 62 GT Hawk resin body from Missing Link. I don't think there are kits for my 1940 Packard sedan and my 1947 Oldsmobile L78 sedan. the only !:1 car I've had that has or at least had a kit is the 31 Model A. I don't know if it is even available. That is for the collector cars. My everyday cars were a 1965 Beaumont sedan, 1973 Gremlin X, 1976 Jeep CJ7 (I have built this one), 1976 Plymouth Volaré (I've also built this one and will redo it with the slant 6 from the Dodge 330 kit along with a bench seat), 1987 Buick Electra Estate wagon, 1997 Pontiac Bonneville, 1999 Pontiac Bonneville SLE, 2009 Dodge Avenger. + 3 pickups, 1989, 1998 and 2008 Dodge.

God I hate this when it doesn't print what I said in response to a quote. Here goes, thanks Monty. There is no sentimental value. Just a plan to touch up or restore several Mustangs I built eons ago. I think I may have sprayed it with automotive paint without primer. We'll see how it turns out when stripped. It was my intention to use foil on the brightwork. I was even going to try my hand at paint over foil for the marker lights and the scripts. As for the bumber, I was planning to try out my alclad as soon as my new airbrush arrives. So I'm goig back to school, soto speak.

They used to do that with old powerful cars. I've read many articles about some big classic being pressed into tow truck service and the guy restoring it had to rebody it and/or use a different body style. Mine is sort of like the box cover.

Andy, would the headlight polishing kits work on something like model glass?
-
Al, is it a complete kit? If not what did you use for a donor? Well done in any case.
-
C'est beau Michel. belle job!
-
This will be the next one. It needs a repaint. The paint on it has crazed the plastic. I suppose this requires something more drastic than sanding like a complete strip job. The glass is fogged up, by the clear I imagine so I may need to make some new glass. Can anyone tell me what the maker of this was?

Actually a couple of days ago. More goodies for the background diorama.
