Best way to chrome plate resin wheels?
Snake45 replied to mikemodeler's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Two things have worked pretty well for me at reasonable cost. 1. Krylon "Foil" spray paint--the best I've found and the big can will do a lot of stuff. Not perfect but pretty darn impressive results. 2. Deco Color Premium Silver Leaf marker, available at Walmart. It's about 95% as "chromy" as Molotow, but dries faster, dries harder (more durable), and costs much less. I've touched up quite a few wheels and bumpers with this stuff and been VERY pleased with the effect. -
Yah, that's exactly what I'm looking for. I already have a metallic BRG one. I'm trying to get as many polished plastic colors as possible, and I don't have this one yet.

She very well might have worked harder than you (or me), at least for a while there, getting started. I don't agree with Oprah on much and am not that big a fan, but she started from nothing and got where she is by hard work and determination, and I have nothing but respect for that. If more people had her work ethic, the world would be a much better place. Royals, on the other hand...I don't waste any respect on them.

Thanks. I found four of them very fast. Looks like if I'm lucky, the least I'd have to pay would be at least $20 (counting shipping). I have a whole $5 in this one. But if it turns out not to be green, or not savable for some reason, I just might go hunting for one. Thanks for the info!

Here's the Nova Junkyard. If I had the three missing pieces, I could get one of them on the shelf in about 2 hours. I can overcome, but it will take me some time to scratchbuild the hood chrome trim piece, and then search the parts boxes for a suitable dashboard and rear bumper. Oh well, it'll be "fun." And here's the glue bomb Cobra. The paint looks much better in the pic than in 3D; it's quite orange-peeled and of course I can't live with those huge molding lines running down the tops of the fenders, so it'll have to be stripped. Notice the bad glue damage where the windshield mounts, and the missing part of the windshield frame. But there's a twist in the plot: I don't have it apart yet, but it looks like it might be one of the semi-rare AMT Cobra kits molded in green, and I've been looking for one of those for a while now. If it is, I'll polish the plastic out and display it with my rainbow of polished plastic models. If the glue damage goes into the body, which I'm pretty sure it does, I won't be able to use the little racing windshield; I'll have to steal a new stock windshield frame (and probably the windshield) out of an unbuilt kit (I have two or 3) and use it. If I have to go that way, it'll be worth it!

Very sad news. RIP Mr. Meyers, you brought a lot of joy to a lot of people, not the least of whom, modelers.

My thoughts exactly! Well done and model on!

Wow, some really NICE models in this thread! Thanks all for sharing them! I'd never realized before that Mercury used the Comet name on their versions of three different Ford lines--Fairlane, Falcon, and Maverick. Of course I knew this, I just never thought about it before.

That McLaren is a stunner! I'll have to keep an eye open for one of those. Didn't find any interesting diecasts (in my price range, anyway) at the local toy show yesterday. On the way home I made my usual stop at the last Welly-carrrying Rite Aid in my area and saw three things I haven't seen before. 1. Ford Capri (Euro version) in red. I've seen several blue ones at Rite Aids, and knew that red ones were once available, but had never seen a red one in 3D before. I like it better than my Richard Petty Blue one, but not enough to buy it. 2. '65 GTO in bluish-green or dark turquoise. I've had one of these in this color for almost 15 years, and a couple years ago gave it some extensive Snake-Fu which involved reshaping the roof. I also have a gold one new in the box somewhere but can't find it (must have fallen in the Snakepit's Black Hole). Only mention it because I've never seen any '65 GTO at any Rite Aid before. 3. '68 Chevelle SS396 in light yellow or cream. I already have one of these, in black, built from a Testor kit over a decade ago, which involved much laborious work reshaping the side windows. I've seen them in red, too, but never in this light yellow before. Gave considerable thought to buying this one--it would look great with a black vinyl top, but didn't relish the idea of doing that window mod again. The deal-breaker was the door handles--they're attached to some weird little "pedestals" protruding from the door skins. This is not that noticeable on my black one but really stood out on the yellow body. Again, I only mention it because I've never seen the Welly '68 Chevelle at any Rite Aid before.

Very cool, very nicely done. What's the source of the '69? That one looks really good, too.

You have a fine, fine memory, my friend! I've been collecting Skylark glue bombs and parts. Giving serious consideration to building up new version of this exact model, close as I can get it.

What a clean build! Well done and model on!

Pro Street Johan 1966 Marlin info needed
Snake45 replied to Sam I Am's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
For some reason I was thinking it was in Car Modeler magazine, but I could very well be wrong. I do remember 3 or 4 years ago seeing a 1:1 pro touring Marlin in one of the real hot rod rags. -
Local toy show: Unbuilt Testor "Lincoln Mint" diecast '69 GTO kit, $10. Not bad considering what they're going for on eBay now. Fairly cleanly built glue bomb AMT 260 Cobra. 100% complete EXCEPT it's missing half the chrome windshield frame. I'd just shine it up and Snake-Fu it with the racing windshield from an unbuilt kit, EXCEPT there's significant glue damage on the body where the windshield frame once lived (the missing part, of course). So I'll strip the body, repair the damage, give it a quickie paint job and "rehab" it as a racer. I'll easy get my $5 worth of fun out of it. And apparently I didn't learn my lesson with Projekt Junknova. Bought a '66 Nova "junkyard." First glance in the box looks like most of two whole kits (the blue-painted Pro Shop kind), but it's missing a few key pieces to get even one whole car together, namely the rear bumper, hood chrome trim, and dashboard. (The other one has no body parts except the body itself.) Oh well, at least the glass is good and there's at least one set of headlights. Both (pro street) chassis seem to be complete (unlike Project Junknova), engines too, and I think one of them will end up under a '65 Nova junk body I'm rehabbing. Again, I'll get $5 worth of fun out of the mess.

I barely know who Meghan and Harry are and almost wish I didn't. I can't imagine caring about what either of them thinks or says on any subject.

The '71-'73 Mustangs are my least favorite of all Mustangs. In generally, I believe they're like the frozen tundra or the State Department: Any change you could make would be an improvement. So, overall, I like this thing. The wheels are much too big. It would look better on 16" wheels. Also, I liked the rear end treatment until I realized that the taillights are right out of a '69 RS Camaro. No! NO! That is just sick and wrong! He should have scratchbuilt taillights of the same shape, but larger all around.

I grabbed one of these this morning at the local toy show for $10. Unbuilt and seems to be complete.

Been there Done that Got the T-shirt, Got the hat!

Oh I will, I assure you. It just needs a good cleaning inside & out, maybe a little Molotow where the chrome has worn thin, and so forth.
-
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Actually, when Mike turned over the rock, the COMING UP graphic would display, and then there would be 30 seconds of previews from the rest of the show. And then four minutes of commercials. And then the last minute of the show before the commercials would be recapped, and THEN the narrator would ask your question.

The very best Keystone Klassic Kustomags I've ever seen were in the original annual issue of the AMT '69 Riviera. Sadly, they're gone from the reissues. I used mine on the '66 Skylark I built in 1969 (which is about due for a rescue/resto). These days I carefully hoard any Keystones I find for a series of Sox & Martin builds I want to do.

Weird color on a Chevelle, but still a very nice, very clean build. Well done and model on!

FSM - The Automotive Content Thread
Snake45 replied to vincen47's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
April issue: Six pages on a "rat rod"-ish creation based on a Revell '32 Ford 5-window. Resin Cummins diesel whose plumbing reminded me of something from a Dr. Seuss book. It's FSM so of course it's heavy on weathering, "patina," and rust. I bought the issue mainly because a friend of mine has an article on a fairly nice F4U-4 Corsair.
