Buy two get 30% off on third. So, in other words, 10% off, right? Reminds me of that old pitch that I absolutely detest: "The more you buy, the more you save!" No, idiot, the more you buy, the more you SPEND.

Car Content in February FSM

My Dad, who flew dozens of military and civilian types, told me that his alltime favorite was the Fairchild/Fokker F28. (His favorite military was the C-121 Constellation.) -
Very nice, very clean build! Well done and model on--we don't see enough of you around here!

Huh. I can't lay hands on it at the moment, but I distinctly remember the body on my 2nd Revell (the one in the middle) being the same size as the bodies of the JoHan '71, the AMT '74 snapper, and the more recent Revell '70. And smaller of course than the Monogram 1/24.

Car Content in February FSM

Seems to be mainly a tribute to Desert Storm jets and tanks. Yawn. Not me. Every page of such stuff is a complete waste of my money, as is every rerun of "Light Up a Starship USS Enterprise." I wish they'd bring out a dedicated sci-fi/horror modeling magazine, and if they threw all the figures and busts and heads in there too, so much the better. -
Absolutely amazing work--you made this misshapened body look about as good as possible. I don't think it's 1/24 though--the first one was, but this one is 1/25 I'm pretty sure. Well done and model on!

Rustoleum Clear Gloss Lacquer
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Just checked coat three, which dried without fogging and seems to be filling in the orange peel rather nicely. Laid on coat four. If all goes well, will do five and six tomorrow, then maybe try starting to polish. Fingers crossed! -
Just finished it--another ripping good yarn! The ambigrams didn't play as big as part in the movie as I remember them doing in the book, but still a good story well told. Now on to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, another one I read several years ago but have never seen. I hope it's as good as the last two.

To me, it's begging for big slicks on black open wheels.

I haven't subscribed to FSM in years, but if I happen to run across an issue at a time my reading stash is getting low, I'll buy it. Just bought the Feb issue. The car feature is a 6- page article on building a weathered, rusty Jeep CJ. By comparison, there's an 8 page story on Godzilla fighting Martians, and 4 pages on painting a Phantom of the Opera head. There's also a 1-page workbench review of the Italeri BMW M1 Procar in Marlboro markings. If either of these car features appeals to you, grab a copy. If not, you haven't missed anything.

Rustoleum Clear Gloss Lacquer
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Update: Have now laid three coats--two light mist coats, one heavy wet coat--on JunkNova, which I believe was orignally painted with rattlecan Model Master Purple Pearl (now discontinued). There has been no adverse reaction between the lacquer and the purple. The original paint is fairly deep and glossy on the horizontal surfaces (trunk, roof, hood, fender tops) but a bit thin and orange-peeled on the vertical surfaces (body sides). My goal is to build up a level, polishable surface everywhere, and then color-sand and polish it. The plan is to lay 2-4 more wet coats of the lacquer and see what it looks like. My experience with rattlecan lacquers is that except for Testor Wet Look Clear, which goes on thick and dries very hard, you need quite a few coats to stand up to a good polish. I'm prepared to use 8-10 coats if necessary. -
Ranma, following your tips, I now have the '66 frame sitting under the junk '65 body. Thanks again!

Actually, if the paint job goes as planned, it will have another name, but I won't reveal it until completion.

amt 1202 1/25 AMT 1963 Chevy II Nova Station Wagon - Craftsman Plus
Snake45 replied to Casey's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
The hardtop and convertible were both in one kit, so that's actually only 4 kits. I ordered a couple of Nova wagons from Modelroundup today. They expect them in anytime between now and the end of the month.- 599 replies

After years of hearing about it, I finally saw Quigley Down Under on Netflix. Not bad at all. All the way through, I thought it could have easily been a Clint Eastwood movie, slotting in nicely between Outlaw Josie Wales and Pale Rider. Research says that it was originally written with Steve McQueen in mind, but he passed before it could be done. Eastwood's name didn't come up. Yesterday I watched The DaVinci Code (Netflix), which I hadn't seen before. I read the book about 15 years ago, but don't remember too much about it, so can't say if the movie was true to the book, but the movie was quite good anyway--as good as any of the Mission Impossibles, and better than any of the Bournes. Now I'm gonna watch Angels and Demons. Also read that one about 15 years ago, and the only thing I remember is it had something to do with writing that could be read right side up or upside down.

Homer, once or twice a year, three or four ANG A-10s will do a fly-by of the airport I live near, doing several low-level circuits before leaving. You can always hear them whistling/whining long before you see them. I imagine that sound was the last thing a lot of Bad People around the world ever heard.

Wow, that came out REALLY nice! I might have to put one of these things on my build list! Model on!

Its cousin, the '69 Camaro, is almost as bad. I've built 5 of them over the decades, but never again. The last two reissues, with the revised, backbirth roof, isn't worth messing with AT ALL. If you absolutely MUST torture yourself with building one of these just to say you did, start with one of the '80s reissues--it will at least build into something that looks kinda sorta somewhat like a '69 Camaro (-ish) from three feet away. The later ones won't even do that.

Looks like you and I will be at the opposite ends of the cost spectrum. My Stupidbird came from a lot of two glue bombs I bought on eBay for I think around $30 (for both), the tires come from a '75 Vette I bought at Ollie's just for parts for $10, Gramps46 donated the wheels, and the engine will come from the parts box.

Very nice, very clean! I too have acquired a pair of glue bomb rebuilders and you are an inspiration to me. Well done and model on!
