You're getting in the neighborhood of an idea I've been kicking around for a couple decades now: A phantom "32 Mustang."

Nice! I never knew the Blueprinter issue was molded in red--and I own two or three or four of them! The original first issue was molded in red, too. I still have mine, though the windshield frame is pretty much collapsed. Someday I might "restore" it, one way or another. Good call on the bigger tires on the rear. The original kit was one of the very first MPC kits to feature the big-n-bigger hollow vinyl tires, along with the Mako Shark and the Ford J car.

Revell did a diecast '55 Chev 2DS kit that was issued in Badman, America Graffiti, and possibly Two Lane Blacktop boxings. I built the AG one and really enjoyed it. I compared the body with the AMT 1/25 2DS body and found that it was true 1/25 (not 1/24) and very well done indeed. I wish I'd grabbed a few more of these when they were available.

Quick question on clear coating
Snake45 replied to Chrischu33's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
For maximum shine, don't use Future. There are much shinier products to work with. -
Orange Sharpie! I'll have to look for one of those. Never thought about that before. What's everyone's favorite "recipe" for backup lights and clear parking lights that are molded in chrome? I've done them in white, and Aluminum, and my latest experiments have been with Testor White Lightning (white pearl) over flat white primer, which is getting closer but still not what I'm looking for. Any other ideas?

AMT Surf Woody Has anyone built one?

I'm with you, Scott. Pipeline is THE surf rock song. -
That looks even better than the original Badman IMHO. Not a fan of the "cow catcher" front spoiler but otherwise, it captures the look, feel, and "vibe" of the era nearly perfectly. Well done!

I knew I'd seen something like it somewhere before. I'm sure I have that issue, so that must be where. Thanks for the details!

Divided by a common tongue

The US "news" media has fallen in love with the term "tarmac," which apparently means "Any flat surface at an airport that doesn't have grass on it." I laughed out lout once at a reporter who was saying something about something happening "out here on the tarmac" while clearly standing on concrete. Similarly, many ignorant Americans thinks it makes them sound smarter to say "Cordite" instead of "gunpowder." I don't think Cordite was ever loaded in the US, and it hasn't been loaded by anyone anywhere since before WWII (maybe WAY before WWII), and yet you can still hear people talking about "the smell of Cordite in the air." -
Model rubber tire rot, has it happened to you.
Snake45 replied to ranma's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have a built '57 Chevy model on which I used some old AMT redline Firestone Supreme tires. It has been sitting in a JoHan display case in my basement (along with about a dozen other models so cased) for a couple decades. The redline tires are getting whiter and whiter and are looking more and more like powdered donuts. I'd assumed this had something to do with the humidity in my basement but I now realize that none of the other tires under the same conditions have that. I'll have to get that thing out and take a closer look at it sometime. -

I just ran across the term again last night in a US-written, US-edited, US-printed book about Corvettes. -
Modelling Oddities/Mistakes

A lot of the '63 boxes were sort of "generic." I think I have both Corvettes and IIRC they're only pictured on the ends, and that might be a stick-on label. I'll try to take another look at them tonight. -
What Color Was the ORIGINAL Monkeemobile?
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I think Harry said on page 1 that the lettering was added for Season 2 of the TV show. I'm pretty sure that the original issue of the kit had the decals, although at that time I'd never seen the car (pictures or on TV) with the door logos. But I could be wrong about that. Hell, it WAS 50 years ago. -

Here's a link to the '66 JoHan Fury box art. Notice that the markings are for S&M's earlier "Gate City Motor" livery before they started using the familiar and iconic Sox & Martin logo. http://www.terapeak.com/worth/johan-1966-plymouth-fury-stock-dragster-race-1-25-model-kit-c-1266-in-box/391481664295/ -
What Color Was the ORIGINAL Monkeemobile?
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
That makes sense. The TV captures on page 1 of this thread look almost like Model Master Italian Red, a very orange-ish red shade, more orange than Chevy Engine Red (a brilliant red-orange). At this point, I think one could paint one's Monkeemobile in just about any shade of "red" and it could be considered accurate for some point in the car's life. -
And remember, there's amber and then there's amber. Some of it is in the yellow/gold range (like the Testor/MM color) and some of it is of a definite orange tint. I used to have a bottle of "Turn Signal Orange," which was TSA to which I'd added some red or orange or something. I either used it up or it dried out years ago. Now if I'm doing "yellow amber," I use the Testor/MM TSA over a base of white or yellow. For "orange amber," I'll first paint the lens Testor Orange and then put a thin layer of TSA over that. Sadly, Tamiya paints aren't available in my area anymore, or I'd be giving more of them a try.

Modelling Oddities/Mistakes

You just reminded me of another oddity/mistake. JoHan offered a Sox & Martin option on a model in 1966 (or was it '65 or '67?), but it was on a full-size Plymouth Fury, a type that S&M never campaigned as near as I can tell. -

Well, you Brits drive on the wrong side of the road, so why not? But seriously, folks, was anyone still running full-size anythings in NASCAR in 1968? I can't think of one but then I'm not a NASCAR expert by any stretch. -
I think they might make the Turn Signal Amber in acryl, but I use the enamel. I've never seen Testor or Model Master Clear Red in enamel, only the acryl. I used to use their Stop Light Red enamel, but like the Clear Red acryl better. I've also been known to do red lights with a red Sharpie in some cases, and that's worked great. One good use for that is "darkening" old JoHan taillights.

I don't think I've ever heard "slot head" (at least not for screws, har har) in the US. I've seen reference to "slotted head" screws, and sometimes "thin slot" screws, but usually, if it's not a Phillips or Allen or Torx or some other oddball system specified, the word "screw" just implies a simple slot of some kind.
