  1. This is going to be a 1/25th scale model of the 1954 Lincoln Capri Ray Crawford raced in the 1954 Carrera Panamericana.

Ray along with co-piloto Enrique finished 1st in the Stock Car Class.

R&R Resins (no longer in exists) produced a resin curbside model of both the 1953 and 1954 Lincoln Capri. I was not able to locate the 1954 kit but was able to find a 1953 kit. No big deal, how much difference is there really! Definitely found out the difference when the kit arrived, more on that later.

Instead of doing just a curbside of Ray's Lincoln, I decided add chassis and driveline detail to the model. I used the Lindberg 1953 Ford Victoria kit for the chassis, wheels and tires and the Monogram '57 Ford Del Rio Ranch Wagon kit for the engine.

I found a set of decals for the car from "Platto's Place" and my buddy Steve filled in with a couple of extra decals.

Now on to the difference between a 1953 and 1954 Lincoln Capri. The chrome trim on the sides and the front and rear bumpers are completely different.

I removed the hood, firewall and chassis side panels from the resin body. To be replaced with the same parts from the 1953 Ford. Also removed the '53 trim from the body.

After removing the '53 trim from the body, I used really small half-round plastic strip for the '54 trim.

More to come...the NNL West is calling!

    Hello Curt,

do you remember the size of half round rod that you used? (Diameter)

I'd like to try to add some trim to a project or two for the first time.

    Thanks

  2. The work you've done on this is FANTASTIC!

I did wonder why you didn't start with the Reliable Resins' 1961 Corvette.

If you don't mind me asking; is the Reliable Resin copy hard to work?

I have two of the SMP 1961 annuals, one unbuilt (good to excellent) that I was lucky enough get from Tom and Jill Carter of Hobby Heaven, back in the late 1980's

(Remember when they would send out their new listings, and then trying to get through on the phone?)

And the second one, is a partially built reclamation project, that I was given for free!

I've always wanted to build one of these, being a fan of the TV series too, and will probably build the partially built one and use an AMT '62 for parts. SAE featured one on their cover, and the build, around the time I was watching the TV series on Nickelodeon.

A little FIY on the TV series on DVD

I purchased a complete set of the series back in 2003,  this is before there was a studio produced set, and these were from a private seller, and although some of the episodes are poor, very poor, it was worth what I spent, because several episodes in the set were copied from the original 16mm film, and are of good quality, but more importantly, contain the original Chevrolet ads.

I don't know if the factory set that has been available a few years now, have the sponsor's ads.

  3. Has anyone actually measured one of these (or their '68 Chevy pickup for that matter)???

I saw the Chevy on eBay quite a while back and messaged the seller for a wheelbase measurement...it was more like 1/28, at least according to the dimension they gave me, so I passed...

I suppose I should do my best to answer jeffs396' question, in the case you haven't bought one.

The truck is 1/25 scale, I don't have a 70's Ford p/u kit to compare it to, but I do have a resin 1/25 scale '72 Chevrolet Suburban and the doors, hood, tailgate and width are almost the same and the First Gear is even a couple of centimetres longer in overall length.

If you'd like me to post some side by side pics; let me know.

I believe these resin Subbys are based on the AMT '72 Cheyenne kit.

  4.

    Hello, and thank you MP.

They appear a little different, I'll have get the diecast and, or, figure something out.

Hello Mandarin and Chuck...hey the two user names together sound like a recipe idea for Allrecipes.com.

I finally found a reasonably priced First Gear '73 p/u to raid for wheel covers ($30.+) from Collectible Diecast.

They are exactly what I needed!

The first one of mine, is with the loose AMT part in the foreground...not flat enough for that look.

  5. Hello Charlie,

    thanks for the tips.

I've decided on Tamiya Light Blue Pearl, after looking at quite a few pics of it online.

It looks like what I want, and hoping it won't come out too glitzy.

On the grill/lights; I trust your memory, but I think what I'm after is the more the Caprice look than the Impala, so I adapted the grill from an AMT '76 Caprice by splitting it and filing off a row or two of the grid in the middle and rejoining it.

    Im happy with it.

  6. Hello AG,

I can't file off enough off the tub to make it seat where I'd like.

The tub already has a couple of paper thin shallow spots.

The rear of the chassis is seating where I'd like it, after filing off the edges of the wheel wells and edges behind and around the fuel tank, but the chassis is teetering at a fulcrum at the rear of the tub.

I believe  I'll have to cut the chassis into a front section, just behind that cross brace and a rear section just in front of the wheel wells.

  7. These are my builds, and rebuilds in 2010.

that is a unique color on your '97 Crown Vic rebuild.

Did you mix that, or is it a stock color?

I would love to build something with that.

  8. One thing about the Blazer (the burgundy one)--that tool broke in half in the door section. When they restored it, they had to retool the door handles, and they did them too small. I've been looking for an original with the right sized door handles for years.

Bob Johnson was the one who told me what had happened to the door handles, so that's probably pretty accurate.

    Terry

I built that kit in '80

bought it at a "People's Drug" store somewhere in the D.C. metro area.

I still have many of the parts in my parts boxes, but I don't know where the rest of it went.

If I run across it; it's yours!

  9. They do look a little different, but they are meant to represent the same 1:1 wheel cover. They look pretty good with a little detail painting, though to be honest the lettering is a tad on the large side.

    003_zpswnfoqnsl.jpg

Yes it's that wide "moat" surrounding the roundel that puts me off on using them on my "Zebra" unit.

I have two sets of resin copies of these, and I will definitely use one set on my "75-78" unmarked SFPD, but really want a little different look and feel on the '72.

I might even use the covers from the 1/24 Motor Max '86 Diplomat, which are headed to the parts box.

  10. Mike, that would be Custom Squads. Tony makes the best and most accurate light bars and accessories for RMPs. For decals, there's The Police Decal Shop on eBay. The decals are first rate. Sorry, I can't provide a link. Only one per post, it seems. :)

Hey! Thank you for the links.

I didn't know of Custom Squads...I've been waiting for my good friend Jeff of Policecarmodels to restock a few detail parts, so it's nice to know of other sources too.

The hubs and wheels at Custom Squads appear to be superior to anything I've seen!

  11.  Wow ,that came out great! Nice work on that interior. Always wanted to build one but just have not gotten to it yet. Again, Really, Really nice and the interior detail is just spectacular.

      Thank you. Jeff

Thanks! Not very good pics. I was trying to describe the floor mounted shotgun rack in front of the operator's seat in detail to another builder on the telephone, and took a few quick snaps. Notice one follicle from my eyebrow in the starboard side rear seat!

I didn't want to be accused of being a copycat so I gave mine a lower stance, (I just couldn't leave it missionary with, what's going to be a COOL looking Inspector figure) and I used Duplicolor GM Sand Metallic. And I didn't know about the white insert in their nozzles, used for "fanning" the paint, so I removed it and threw it away!!

I called Duplicolor thinking, by the way my paint job came out just globs and sags, that I must've bought a bum can. They are very nice and patient people by the by!

To make a long story longer; I had to start over, and had a hard time getting it all off the body and that's why it has the "witness" scratches in places...I'll do better next time.

I have a diecast N.Y.C. Police Department 2009 Unmarked CV that's almost ready for progress pics that I'll put up here as soon as I'm able.

  12.

I would pay a king's ransom ($$$.00) for an original or resin copy of the little soap box racer!

    Any takers?

Correct. Back in the day I picked up the "Derby Champions" '69 El Camino, and it contained a separate sheet for the Soap Box Derby version plus TWO of the sheets in your pic (score!)...and I still haven't cut them up.

The Derby Champions kit was re-issued shortly after the regular annual so I would assume this sheet was included in the annual with the Derby stuff being added later.

  13. Hello LRN!

you've inspired me to try my hand at one of these.

could you please elaborate on the Ford Van wheel covers?

If I can find some; I'd like to use them on a 1972 LTD. Also.

    Thanks for any help.

    Looks great!

  14. Hello AGg

I'm looking for answers on the correct way to evenly trim out or enlarge tire openings.

I've recently ordered a ModelHaus '85 Impala full kit with some of their T-196 tires.

Carol has recommended those tires to get the desired factory stock look I want to end up with, but warned "depending on your modelling skill" to get them to fit the hubcaps and wheel backs.

I've presumed that trimming will be necessary.

Other than a sharp blade; and band aids what else would you recommend?

I'll post pics of these sessions (and injuries) as I progress.

    Thanking you in advance
