  1. Thanks for your thoughts guys. I am going to sand down the finish a little tonight as it has brought out a few imperfections, bad prep I guess :)

    I suppose I should have had an old piece of plastic to practice on as getting a good finish as its different with the airbrush. Never mind though I am having fun which i the important part.

  2. Well finally got my airbrush running tonight and laid a good coat of paint of my F40 kit. I am totally amazed at the quality of the finish. So much smoother than using rattle cans and deeper colour. It will need rubbing down and another few coats but looking not too bad so far.

    So glad I went for a compressor as using a propellant can was just of no use to me.

  3. Thanks for the replies guys. I was a bit ignorant prior to reading the forum. I always thought that if a paint came out of a can it was best to work in an open environment and with a respirator if possible but never thought the same was true if spraying indoors with an airbrush.

    I am going to have a look at a paint booth but in the meantime I will get a respirator and stick to painting in my open garage.

  4. Hi Guys,

    I have just been reading through the paint booth thread and it has go me thinking. I am just getting back into this hobby and never really thought about paint fumes etc.

    I will be airbrushing with a compressor and plan to use acrylics as often as possible. There will be times tough when I will need to use enamel and other types of paint in the Airbrush.

    My question is what precautions do I need to / should take?

    I was assuming that a lot of the problems with paint fumes were down to the fact that a lot of modelers use aerosol cans and not airbrushes, is this the case?

  5. Hi Robert,

    Its a 1/12th scale by Revell, pretty big at 30 cm I think. Its a shame the detail is not there with the kit though. Even basic obvious things like the F40 logo on the spoiler is not there and the engine detail leaves a lot to be desired in comparison to other models I have seen.

    It is fun though :D

  6. This is the kit I am working on just now. I haven't built a kit since I was a kid so I guess its kinda like my first all over again.

    The rear was a bit of a pain as it comes in three parts, clam shell, spoiler and rear light cluster/grill. This meant a bit of filling and sanding but its there :rolleyes:

    Just waiting on the primer to harden and then I will sand it ready for the colour coats.

  8. I'd also like to add that after I wash the body, I start with the panel lines using those pens. I primer the body and do panel lines again. After each coat of primer and maybe the first few light coats of color and then stop. Let the last wet coat cover and that should deepen them and makes the line just a tad darker than the paint on the car.

    Thanks Chris, maybe I should have looked around the forum a bit first :rolleyes: There is an Art store in my local town that sell those so I have that covered B)

    I am still curious as to how you deepen the panel lines as the ones on the model I am working on are quite shallow.

  9. Hello,

    A simple answer would be paint before assembly. However, there are cases where it is advisable to do the opposite. For example, a subassembly that will get a lot of handling, may be better to do after. Also, if ther is any filling or modifications needed, then of course you need to paint after like for example engine halves. Use the "before" as a rule of thumb, but keep in mind there are going to be exceptions.

    AND let the paint fully dry before handling the parts. That's one of our most common mistakes.

    Thanks for the tips, I have some of the parts painted in primer now and will let them harden overnight. Going to make a start on the body now.

  10. Since that is Enamel paint, you can use just about any type primer (if it were lacquer paint you would want to use lacquer primer.) I would suggest rattle can primer as that should be easy enough to find and will get the job done. It is possible to lay it down pretty smooth, but I usually wet sand with 1000 grit before paint.

  11. Thanks for the welcome and the tips guys, I am actually in the UK so will have a look around my local home depot type stores. I am sure that I will find something similar this side of the Atlantic :(

    I am planning to stick with the Airbrush as I find that aerosols here in Scotland are quite expensive and can sometimes be hard to get the colours you would like. Not sure if we have stricter laws here in the UK on aerosols or not???? It seems that we in the UK can never find the same amount of choice with anything we look for in comparison to other countries.

    The Ferrari is sitting awaiting paint on the major parts which I cannot do until I get my compressor but I will post some pics as the build progresses, no doubt I will be askig for help along the way B)

    My name is Dave and I have recently decided to get back to building model cars. I started building models when I was about 10 years old until I was about 14, though my little bro' used to smash em up..........

    I decided to start building again to give me a hobby to help relax and I love to perfect things..... :rolleyes:

    I am currently building a Revell 1:12 scale Ferrari F40 which I have basically opened up and grouped some parts for painting. I have bought a Badger model 200 airbrush and I am looking for a compressor for this brush as well, suggestions most welcome

    I just realised how bad a finish you can get with enamels straight from the tin so I need to work on thinnng those I think and also getting some nice paint to run through the airbrush.

    Well thats all from me just now but I do hope I can ask you guys for some help and look forward to getting to know everyone
