  1. When i started on this thread (well over an hour ago) i just thought you had fabricated a couple of parts for the front end which i thought was very impressive work, but then, as i have scrolled through many pages and seen what i've seen, i then realised the depth of work i was trying to contemplate. I guess, yeah, what can you say, this is Nasa level skill sets, isn't it?
  2. Update, well i have once again reached another low regarding AMT wheels, i've basically snapped the end off of the axle shaft that pushes into the wheel hub carrier, the wheel wasn't rotating freely enough so i pulled it back off, that was a mistake. I had forgot to remove paint from the end of the axle, hence the lack of rotation. Now i have an incredibly difficult job of trying to rectify it. Sigh
  3. Well i would consider myself good but since joining this forum and exploring other people's builds and knowledge, it seems i am quite well off the mark even after 27 years of building. I need to get better at spray painting and weathering techniques, other than that, i do go to great lengths in order to achieve the maximum detail on each vehicle, i've done numerous restorations which involved fabricating pieces from scratch, like wheel hub carriers, and a very intricate clamp type piece for the 1/16 Gene Snow Charger Funny car recently, windows, i do set the bar really high for myself in order to avoid mistakes, but it still happens sometimes. I've seen some of the models on this forum, and boy have i been blown away, especially some of the trucks!
  4. Ahhh, no! Not Humbrol paints, i've still got a few tinlets that i got off my uncle that are from the 60s i think, and they are still totally usable! I have a reasonably good stock of them, gloss 19 and chrome silver are the worst Humbrol paints, they clog up the lid in no time and then you can't shut it properly and the paint dries up.
  5. Thanx Force, looks like i will have to try and weather the engine block to dull off the white a bit, it's not going to be easy!
  6. Thanx Highway, the sand beige engine you posted is the unit that comes in the AMT kit i have, i don't think i have seen that red Cummins engine with that cam cover in a kit. I am going to leave it white but i will try to add some extra detail where i can, i need to get to grips with weathering techniques, i do have a Tamiya weathering sponge brush and a Tamiya weather master snow, soot, rust thing, never used them before, not sure if they are the best to use for the engine and the chassis.
  7. Will keep you updated no problem, i too have the bed together but it isn't painted or anything and i might still break it apart for modification. The instructions say to paint the engine flat white, which i have, but most Cummins engines seem to be red or yellow.
  8. Unbelievable details, as professional as a model build can get!
  9. Thanx David, would the clear yacht varnish be the best or would it be the gloss?
  10. Spray chrome? I guess that will be great for some applications but i don't think you could use it for small bits of body work around the windows or along the body. Would be good to see some results though.
  11. Hi there, so your from Cornwall i see, well that's a lovely place been there quite a lot myself and i met a nice girl down there once! Anyway, yeah this kit, there seems to be a fairly consistent lack of interest overall in building the truck kits, a lot of us start doing some of it and hit blocks and give up for ages and into years. Well i've kept at it this last few weeks, tires and wheels really driving me round the frigging bend to be honest but i now have a nice perfect rolling chassis albeit with one more rear axle to fit. I have already done the interior to near as possible to the factory colours as it would of come, dash is correct, engine is all done, i have built the rear section and prepped it ready for some primer and a few other bits here and there done but still many months of work left. Have another go at yours Gary, a fresh time around seems to work, and we're really up against it too, have a look at this one...
  12. Thanx for the tip Harvey, you know i never actually considered warming a tire up first, although like you say, it isn't needed with the vagueness of AMT wheels and tires. Nevermind, we get through it in the end.
  13. That is, quite stunning, i don't think i can remember seeing a better quality build of this truck on the Internet. I can only aspire to get that level of a paint job on the Peterbuilt i am building, but i am definitely up against it!
  14. Thanx Matt, i think i shall look into the Molotow application i think, although the price seems a lot. I also need to get a simple silver pencil for doing floor pan work, i saw a video on this forum with some guy using one and the results are excellent, a lot more tidier than trying to paint a perfect line with a chrome paint.
  15. Hi there, so what exactly is this bare metal foil you mention, i have never seen that, do you cut pieces out and glue them?
  16. Thank you to everyone who commented here, sorry i have only just been able to find this thread that i started, i think it is a good thing i am a bit better at keeping up with my modeling projects than i am with my Internet duties!
  17. Hi all, so i am just wondering about people's experiences with AMT truck kits. Basically, i have gone back to AMT's 1/25 wrecker kit having started it a couple of years ago, i got to a stage with it where i basically lost interest due to making a painting error on rear axles so i put it away and got on with other projects. Anyway, i have been cracking on with it for the last few months but i am wondering, is it just me, or are AMT instruction sheets piss-poor? They were definitely NOT created by an engineer, and absolutely nothing like Tamiya. I had a few similar issues with fabricating the chassis on Orange Blossom, although that did in the end come out spectacularly (i'll have to upload some pics of kits soon). With regards to the wrecker truck, i have been having one issue after another with putting the wheels together, which i assume will be the same for all AMT truck kits, unless AMT have made the construction process as difficult as hell by design. Any thoughts on this?
  18. Ok Casey, i'll try and do that.
  19. I just missed out on an auction for the Bushwhacker Jimmy about 3 or more years ago, i'd been away and didn't know one came up on auction, Doh! Never so much as seen the other 3, but i know they are somewhere out there, among somebodies lucky collection
  20. Hi again, I think i am enjoying this! This time i am wondering on the rarity of these particular kits, scale of 1-10 again (10 being highest), what do you guys think?
  21. Hi Mark, I've noticed quite often that the quality of AMT plastic can be substandard, even the AMT Peterbuilt Wrecker truck i started on last year has parts that have extra thin layers hanging off pieces and the sprue. Some parts are almost too small to sand down because of it, actually now i think about it, the instruction sheet for said truck was a bit hard to understand when it came to building the chassis, i had to bring up images online. AMT has one of the best line-up of kits, but kits can lack quality.
  22. Excellent knowledge there Mark thanx, i had a feeling the Strip 'n Surf van was rare, i've never seen one for sale, the only closest kit i have would be MPC's Krazy Van which is fairly common. I'll keep my eyes open for a Vega wagon then, but the other problem i have is that i live in England, and so we never did have an abundance of certain things, and with many items on US Ebay, sellers won't ship to England. Phil
  23. Alright there, just a bit of fun i thought, on a scale of 1-10 (10 being rarest), what would you score each of these AMT kits as?
  24. Hi there, i was just trying to view everyone's models in the gallery section but most of them won't open. Any ideas? Thank you
