Re-engineering Monograms Lotus Esprit...new update!
randyc replied to Dann Tier's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Good for ya! On the house, that is. -
I will try these ideas soon. Thanks for sharing.

Check these out. I forgot the steering gear obviously. But you don't notice it on the shelf. Looks like I had to do some work at the very front of chassis. I don't remember. And I think I cut the fender Wells out of the 67 and glued them in as well. Not too hard to do.

I had one of those. Laid a beautiful black paint job on it. At some point it fell off the shelf I think. Bought another kit to repair it and redo some of the questionably built parts. Never got back around to it and have no idea where it is now. The red looks great and the set is very nice to have. I do have one fo the Ertl Prestige 1`/18 diecasts, so I probably won;t ever get back to mine IF I find it again. I might have sold it. I recently got a motormax 55 for $10. I blew it aprat and detailed what needed it. Got a 56 for a set of proper wheels for the 55 and I'm working on teh 56 now. But will have a set of early 300s. White 56, red 55, black 57. Nice job and thanks for firing me up more to work on my 56 this weekend.

Thanks! That's the color we (wife helped with it) decided on after the first try was entirely too light - mostly white (made a good primer coat). IF I were to ever paint one again using flat paints, I would smooth it down more before trying to clear it. Lesson learned was that I don't like a dead flat as a base color. And I have a gray car in my collection now that we like. Whoda thunk it? When I look at my cars displayed, I want to see all colors. except black. Black doesn't show up well enough for me in my display. And I do have a few black cars. Can't be helped if black was the only choice. And the "plainness" of the gray makes the car stand out. I have my 53 Chevy in the greenTestors extreme lacquer beside it and they both stand out in their own ways.

Thanks! I'm working on my foiling. A general tip that I learned from Mark Gustavson a long time ago - run the back of an xacto around the trim to give a sharper "edge" to trim the foil after paint. So while I'm smoothing the general body and scribing panel lines, I try to run around all the chrome a couple times so I have a sharper place to trim the foil. that can get tough in places and it shows up sometimes. On the next build, 56 Chrysler, I'm going to try Steven Guthmiller's tip about foiling before paint. Haven't gotten the hang of it in the past but going to try it again later in the paint process.

I used the body on a pro street chaos years ago. If I had to do it again, I can't imagine a better combination than what you did. Beautiful

Thanks! "classy" isn't really what I was thinking, but I do appreciate the kind words. My "guy" did want a car that his girlfriend wouldn't be too embarrassed to ride in.

'69 SS 396 Chevelle kit , AMT kit , no rad fan .
randyc replied to rob1957's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
But there are rarely extra fans in kits since it is NOT a high profile item. It might take me a few minutes to find an extra fan myself. I went to the fotki page. I see the FAN, but not drawing of the RADIATOR/CORE SUPPORT. No install step. what the heck??? It is shown in step 10/11 in place, but nowhere do I see a detail of whether it goes in the body first or glued to chassis. In the 68 instructions, https://public.fotki.com/drasticplasticsmcc/mkiba-build-under-c/amt-instructions/automotive-cars--pi/chevrolet/1961-1970/amt-68-chevrolet-ch/picture002.html#media, it is shown in step 2. Also, the 1970 Chevelle based on the same kit is missing the radiator wall in the instructions. Red car on gray box. Seems like a conspiracy brewing.... And used opened kits can be a mess for this reason. You think everything is there til you get it opened and building, then see what you miss. But the fan is a parts box thing. Maybe a radiatror wall and radiator too. Could be scratch built reasonably easily if builder has enough stuff on hand. -
Still reading this and still thinking on it. Ya know, WHAT IF the people posting atta boys really do think it's great work? IF the more pro builders among us give praise, maybe they have talked to the builder and are being encouraging, even though we see stuff that we think could be done better. Or maybe the atta boys are coming from builders who think it is awesome. Maybe we shouldn't say something that is a bad build to us is a bad build for everyone? And I'm not sure I think people who are extremely critical should be commenting on this or any builds if they haven't posted up themselves for all to see and praise/criticize? I mean, if you're criticizing me or BobJoe or whoever, do you have proof of your skills or are you just bloviating? For me persoanlly, if [for example] Bill Geary comments on MY build, whatever he says is very important to me. I've seen his finished work and he is one of the best ever at figuring out the details and everything else - a total package builder. But if you are critical and I have never seen a finished build from you, then what weight should that carry? My builds are more Roadkill than Pebble Beach, so any comments are welcome. Maybe, just maybe, the comment is not "blind praise" from the individual that made it.

Stuff like that happens to me all the time. Or I put down a part to pick up glue and then can't find the part. And to do fine detail work, I usually have my glasses off. So I have to put my glasses back on, find part, repeat whole process. Keep working - looking forward to seeing the final finish on this one.

THAT is my whole modeling philosophy!!!! This is looking great so far!

Not my normal interests, but who doesn't love a great model? Have read the entire post now and hope to see more of it coming up as you continue to work through the issues. I simply do not have the patience for a project of this magnitude and greatly admire those who do. I do like your comment about doing it over until it is "right" - I know that isn't the exact quote, but a GREAT idea for all modelers of all levels. Thanks for sharing all the details fo the build.

Welcome and please continue to share your builds. This is lovely. I love that generation of cars.

Nice hot rods!

oh that is so sweet! Love those big barges.

I'll see what I can do. It's still on the mantle and not too hard to get to.
-
I do too... and not so fondly. Just not my thing. Had a friend that would drink too much and start playing that Horse with no name song.

Thanks. It's name is Sally. My wife wanted Mustang Sally. I have the green JL GT500 that I call Sam. Mustang Sally and Mustang Sam, living together in Mustang land (in our case, the mantle) .... you have to be old enough to remember Captain & Tenille. And that may be the FIRST time they have been mentioned on this or any model car forum. now back to the topic at hand...

Oh yeah, my guy was stretching every dime. He removed all the brightwork himself so he could polish on it while the car was being painted. He really wanted to take it further, but he just didn't have the money to do anymore right now. He tried to get the most bang for his buck. he probably left he skirts off because he wanted to further distance himself from the car his parents gave him. They were pretty upset when he came back from the car show with all that pinstriping, too. Since his mom took really good care of it, he had to only clean the interior really well and it was fine. Well other than a "new" front seat and one door panel from the junkyard from a wrecked car that was pretty new when junked. [I acrtually did that once with my 71 Dodge Dart - car in junkyard had nicer interior than mine. 4 door seats also fit in 2 dr car. Just rear seat is more rounded at corners]. The Olds also has duals so it makes a bit more noise. He'll drive it till he can afford something nicer. Maybe a new Falcon or Corvair... My mind just keeps expanding the story. Maybe the Olds was replaced with the 56 Chrysler 300 I'm starting now. Or his dad bought a new 300? I could do the whole story... I should stop now... I do kinda think of stories to go with a lot of my builds if they aren't factory stock. Why would something be done like I build it? I guess we are all "that person" in some form when we build.

What can be NON PC about a gray car??? LOL Thanks for the compliment.
