  1. I said the tale ended. This was not true.

I spent some time test printing the parts (many thanks to Bill Geary/Mr. Obsessive for assistance). The outcome yielded major design revisions.... Again....

I tested single body and separate roof designs. Each has it's pros and cons as far as the printing and finishing are concerned.

I found also I have to change the chassis design removing tiny parts from the main structure as they tend to break easily.W

Well, that was all for the time being.

  2. What I really miss in this hobby is the concentration on the top of the line models (well, Revell started lately to see the light) and lack of accessories. It is somewhat disappointing to put time and effort in a model seeking perfection, then loose all the realism by standing in front of books on a shelf. I know, dioramas need space, time, imagination, and above all, accessories. The latter what I would love to see, but never came true. Luckily, I am old (or young??) enough to witness the 3D printing age. I did some detail parts and camping and boat trailers to introduce some realism and also uniqueness to my models. Sadly, I am working with a faster pace in the digital world than in real life. Instead of building the camping trailers I did the last couple of months, I started another CAD project, which I am sharing its WIP with you here.  I used some online boat building plans to create this vintage motor boat. It will consist of roughly 10 parts, so not a big hassle to build. I did my best to achieve proper kit engineering. Since clear parts are difficult to print, I designed it with flat wind screen that can be fabricated of any clear sheet. The pictures are a bit outdated. It looks slightly different, has a propeller and a rudder, as well as a dashboard and steering wheel. I am currently working on the seats. I am torn between a bench or bucket seats. What do you think??

    and....

Since we are interested in cars rather than boats, a matching trailer will follow.

    I hope you like it.

  3. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of choices of powerful enough mid size European cars in the kit world. There is no Renault 16, Ford Taunus 17 or Fiat 1300 to put in front of this trailer. There are only kits of sport and upper class cars, like Tamiya's jaguar MK ii and Morgan,  Ebbro's Citroen DS, Hasegawa's BMW 2002 and revell's jaguar E-type and MG.

Some nice looking trailers. One suggestion is to move the axles a bit rearward.  It may be the way they are presented in the photos, but each one appears to be too far forward, which would make the trailer almost impossible to tow and would cause them to sit tail-down nose-up when disconnected.  As a former welder I have built a few trailers and that was a mistake I made on the first one.

This is the prototype I wanted to model:

  5. .... Well, a sort of.... The trailer hitch is still under construction.

What started as a quick project to relief some of the frustration of the Lamborghini LP 500 never ending story turned out to be a lot of work in itself.

I started initially with a multi piece body to achieve some degree of modularity. This was found to be a major printing headache. Different parts deform differently and create more room for flaws. Moreover, the joints were flimsy and needed kit design enhancement. Therefore I decided to start from scratch again, reinforcing the parts wherever possible. I haven't printed any of the models yet, but based on experience it looks a sturdy design.

I have a soft spot for tiny trailers, so I started with a 2000mm design. That would be exactly 80 mm in 1/25. But since Hasegawa and Revell 1/24th models were intended as towing cars, my engineer's mind derailed immediately and stretched the trailer to 2400 mm and 3600 mm, meaning 100 and 150 mm in scale.

After everything was finished I discovered I made the trailers as RHD. Not a big deal though as the STL data can be easily mirrored before printing.

Here are the pictures of the digital models. Photos of the physical models will follow once available. I hope you like them.

I've looked at the colors in the link above and looked at some photos online. Seeing lots of red, white and yellow. But I saw a couple of light green ones that caught my eye. I have a bottle of Tamiya x-15 light green, I'm going with it. The interior will be either black or some type of brown.

This is what I call telepathy. I have chosen the same colour for my targa.

    But....

I gave up using Tamiya acrylic paint for the exterior finish as they cannot be polished properly. Therefore I picked up a close green tone by testor.

  7. My trailer showed earlier was two round in comparison with Revell T2 bus and the sides were too soft to print properly. I did deliberately this way with the intention to add interior details later. Sadly, the first test print showed it was very difficult to put together. A multi piece design suffered from incontinent part deformations and printing tolerances. There was a greater possibility for flaws. To put it short: it looked nice on the screen but terrible in reality.

As a remedy, the body shell was strengthen by a mesh of stiffeners. The roof attachment pins were replaced by a large center tab. The floor panel was also strengthened. This meant interior had to be abandoned in favour of the sturdier body shell and ease of printing.

I will try to print the trailer today. Wish me luck....

  8. This grainy look means either the paint dried before hitting the model (as you guessed), or the paint layer did not reach the saturation level. In this case the painting process has to go on. To assess the situation wet sand the grains with, say 2000 paper. If you get a smooth dull surface, you can go on with the clear. If it exposes the plastic/primer then the paint layer is too thin to achieve gloss.

Yes, 3 body styles.  The Mach 1 and Boss 351 were performance models using the  fastback/Sportsroof body, and the Grande was a deluxe trim on the coupe.

I think they are going to doing a flat hood for the Eleanor movie car.  The weird thing about the Eleanor, though, is it had a '73 Mach 1 grille with the '71-72 style front bumper.

This is probably what I saw in the other thread. I thought it is going to be a "legal" 1973 Mustang.

Ok, I ordered two BOSS kits. I will wait for the Elianor to convert one BOSS to a basic Mustang, and use the BOSS hood with the Elianor to make a customized something.

By the way, I saw alternative painting of the hood to avoid the decal/paint combination. I will probably go this way.

  10. I guess I get it now. So the entry model was simply called Mustang. Hardtop, Convertible or sport roof referred to body style. Grande referred to another trim level.

Anyway, I saw in a different thread test shots of flat hood and a different grill. It seems Revell is going to release the Mustang Sport roof in the future. Therefore, a modification is like resisting assimilation by the Borg: Futile.

  11. Dear All,

As the usual Revell's approach, the kit will have a partial decal for the bonnet, which will never look decent especially for the silver variant. Because of this (well, partially) I thought about building a different variant to avoid this problem altogether. The first variant that came in mind was the Sport Roof. The engine might not be prototypical, but that is far better than an odd looking model. My main problem is the lack of reference material. All I could find is an online brochure with a couple of pictures. Therefore, my question to the  experts here what does it take to convert an 1971 Mustang Boss to Sport Roof? I can print decals and small 3D parts if necessary.

    Thanks in advance.

Does anyone make a quality four door '57 Chevy Bel Air?

A resin manufacturer named f&f used to make a sport sedan many, many years ago. The Model-Haus made a conversion body for revell's black widow kit to convert it into 150 4 door sedan. I believe Steve Kohler (star models) sells a 210 4 Door sedan.

I dont think it looks that far away. The eriba camper trailers were more rounded than the vans

Stick to the van or stick to my preference...... that is a difficult choice... Anyway, the shape is a minor issue that I corrected within minutes. I had to correct many  design deficiencies revealed by the first test print. The multi piece design was scrapped and replaced by a uni-body. I kept the roof separate to facilitate the painting process, and for display purposes should an interior be added in the future. The new body-roof interface is much more elaborate than the four thin corner pins of the initial design. Moreover, the sides are enforces by a dense grid of webs. I tried to avoid using them to add an interior easily in the future. I will add pictures as soon as they are ready.

  14. Comparison of my design with revell's samba bus showed that while the roof and tail gate are very close to the Revell kit, my trailer has rounded sides. The wheel opening is clearly off. I am 100% positive I followed the blueprints. Perhaps the blueprints themselves are not accurate. Anyway, accurate or not, since my trailer is intended to join the Revell bus, Revell design will be the reference.

    Back to the drawing board.
