daveo Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 Hi guys, im thinking of attempting my first 2 tone job, is there any advice someone could offer? Am i crazy? What should i expect? Any and all advice is greatly appreciated, Btw I really love and appreciate this place!, Dave
restoman Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 Mask it as well as you can - overspray will go where you didn't think possible. Don't cheap out on tape. Use the best you can get. I like 3M Fineline for the paint edge, but there are likely others just as good if not better. #1 Rule... if it ain't sanded, don't paint it. Masking tape will easily peel off paint that is sitting on un-sanded parts. Try to keep you coats as thin as possible to avoid build-up on the tape edge. Lighter colours first. Put the first colour on before you mask off for the second colour, letting the overspray go where the second colour will go. When that first colour is dry, then mask and sand for the second colour. Keeps that paint edge from becoming a big ridge. Lots of other things. I'm sure other will chime in.
High octane Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 I just did a two-tone paint job last week. I use 3-M tan masking tape, which as been around for years. After spraying the lighter color and masking, I shoot clear along the tape edge so if there's any bleed through it will be...........................BINGO! Clear. Then I spray my darker color and remove the tape in an hour or two. Piece of cake.
Custom Mike Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 Good advice from both Mike and Nick, the only thing I would add is don't be afraid of it, the worst that can happen is you screw it up. If you do, strip it and try again, every successful two tone I've done has a bunch of failures behind, it's how you learn!
daveo Posted July 5, 2015 Author Posted July 5, 2015 Thanks for all the helpful tips restoman, highoctane, and custommike. I will take those on board and have a practise on and old shell, cheers!

DeeCee Posted July 5, 2015 Posted July 5, 2015 (edited) I do many multi color paint jobs with out any bleed through, i always run my thumb nail across the tape edge, just to make sure it has stuck as best as possible. Just go for it mate, nothing like practice, it's only paint, if you stuff it up, rub it back and go again. But i agree with the others, GOOD quality tape, and low tack if you can get it.
