If I am not mistaken, which I usully am according to the wife. That truck is one of the very first model trucks that AMT put out back in the late 50's or early 60's. Your right it is a very basic kit, it was made in the times when they used screws for the final assembley.

As for the make of the truck I am not sure. It kinda of resembles a GMC and or MACK cabover. But my best guess would be that it is an artists drawing of just a truck.

I think that's the Dodge cab over w/ a Fruehauf trailer. As far as being mistaken you're not alone brother! My girlfriend (of 10 years) has been telling me the same thing! According to her my strong points aren't decision making but for getting things down from the top shelf at the grocery store that she can't reach! GEEEEZE .....

What's goin' on...

Randy.

I emailed Tim Ahlborn and asked him this. Here's his reply......

"Scott

The Dirt Hauler was AMT's first truck kit. It was more of a toy, a fantasy truck, very futuristic. It was around 1/28th or 1/30th scale.

And now we know!

thank you very much ,now I can move on with my life.well maybe..... now I need to find another one to build perhaps as an auto transporter like the european race teams used in the 50's and 60's or a tow truck or a camper or a missle launcher or or or dang maybe I need more than 1 more.oh I forgot the obvious choice box stock you know for posterity. thanks again for your help. btw the racers wedge fits on the back almost perfectly.

can any one tell me what this truck is .the kit is pretty basic I just want to see or at least know what the prototype looks like thanks in advance for your help

ok now how about if you've seen it before I have only seen this one and a cab of one in a parts lot on an auction site .the lines of this truck speak to me(too much?)I'm just curious if they are easily obtained or pretty rare. this one is complete and I would rather carve into one that is in worse shape.but I'll do it if I have to.

Randxo:

My guess is that they are very darn rare, as I have only seen one other one like it, and I own it (no I dont want to sell it). I bought it off of the bay about a year ago and havent seen one on there since.

Before I set the knife to it I would do some research and try to find out just what its worth and how many where made. Beings that it is probley around 50 years old and was AMT's first model truck, I would venture to say that there were not that many made. As it was an unproven seller, they wouldn't flood the market with them till they found out how the public would take to them. As far as I know they were never repoped.

Thats just my way of thinking, and my throughts on it. I do like what you are thinking of doing with this old truck, it sounds like it could be an interesting build.

I got mine on the bay also which was fortunate for me it was a buy it now for $30 or $40 and i think the shipping might have been a little high I ended up getting it on the last day . once i got it i've been looking for more haven't seen any except the one built one in the back of a parts lot.my problem isn't to cut it up or not but rather what to build it as if i can't find more. like i said the racers wedge almost falls onto the back of the cab .and i bet the trailer could be a nice start on a dump truck fantasy style and the rims will look ok on an older medium duty truck.nothing here worth super detailing but a good basis for a suggestive build.

Yeah this thing is a rare one. This is the second time in my life I've heard/seen this kit. The first time was from another model (truck) discussion group. Would it be worth building? It all depends on if you really want to. I like to have mulitples of each kit before one gets built. One to build and the other for the stash collection. Example I spent about three years looking for the AMT White Western Star (GP decals) sealed at a reasonable price. Before I build this I'm going to get at least one more. Another option is find (or) if you're a good resin caster reproduce the pieces of this kit you'd like to build. As far as the value of this kit is it all depends on who wants it and how badly they want it.

The idea putting a ramp body on the back of it w/ say an old school AMX or Camaro on it is too cool. Built like that I could easily see it as a (red line) hot wheels car back in the day. If ya do build the truck and you have no plans for the trailer let me know.

Thats got to be a rare one for sure! First time I ever saw this one and I have seen all ( thought I did!) the AMT truck kits. Kinda reminds me of a certain Tonka truck I use to play with in the mid '60s. Must of be back in the day when toy & plastic kit companies didn't want to use certain brand names cause of legal problems or ?? and they used something that comes close to looking like several brands depending on how you look at it? Does remind me of a Ford C-600, Dodge L-700 and a GMC truck.

Really cool and thanks for sharing it with us.

If I recall correctly, both versions were released in 1968 or 1969. The box art is very similar to other AMT releases from that time period. AMT's first "real" truck kit, the Pete 359 came out about 2 years after these hit the shelves.

I think it is the "tonka" look that I like,I also am fascinated by the fact that alot of people have never seen this kit, when I got the first one I wasn't sure about the scale but I think the wheels are the only under scaled items .you can just use the wheels from a c-600 or l-700 and it looks right.trucks aren't my specialty but I think this will be a fun project as soon as I nail down exactly what I want to do with it .

I have discovered that these aren't as rare as I thought I now have several in various condition.the moving van is way easier to find than the dirt hauler but with patience they do show up .most I got for around $25.00.if you like them you can find them.
