Semi Trailer Mechanic Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 What's goin' on... Has anyone painted a part black prior to using a metallizer? (Aluminum) Thanks in advance.
Seattle Mike Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 I usually do - it seems to help with the coverage of the metalizer, as well as making it easier to see where you've painted and where you haven't..
FordRodnKustom Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 No, base coat isn't necessary for Testor's metalizers. It is for Alclad chrome though.
CAL Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 I will prime with Tamiya primer if I've worked a part alot, but otherwise I'll just shoot it on bare plastic. So, no. It doesn't really need a base.
Semi Trailer Mechanic Posted March 22, 2008 Author Posted March 22, 2008 What's goin' on... I've always just cleaned the plastic (part) and shot the metallizer on w/ no basecoat. In the past I've heard that gloss black will bring out a more refined shine when using the Alclad that's why I ask. Didn't know if that would work or not. Thanks!
envious8420 Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 i know when i use spaz and alcad on lexan a black backing makes a perfect mirror, i also backed it up with different colors to achive tinted mirror/chrome like flames fading yellow to orange to red. i havent tried on plastic yet to know if it works the same.
