gtx6970 Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 Another long ago started project. I wanted to build this kit when it was re-issued a few years back. I started it,,,getting the interior and chassis done ( the engine isn't accurate anyway so I decided to make it a curbside and glue the hood shut) Figuring I would need to use an a air brush to achieve the exterior fade paint work,,,, I shelved it . But when I stumbled onto an article about the car a few weeks ago. I dug it back out to try an idea I had . The actual car was pearl white in the front, followed by the gold,, then candy tangerine that all fades back to what the article states was almost a deep maroon color. Using a box trimmed to just barely cover the body. I used rattle cans . The whole body was painted gold,,,I placed my box / mask over it covering the body up to about halfway up the hood ,,,then the Front end was painted Tamiya pure white with a light coat of Testors white lightning. Then turned it around then a fog coat of Testors metallic red on the back end. Plan is cover the body up to about mid door in Testors Candy red , then clear the whole thing . I've got my fingers crossed it works .
gtx6970 Posted March 2, 2016 Author Posted March 2, 2016 My ultimate goal is replicate the car as it appeared in the movie. Not as its restored today.
gtx6970 Posted March 2, 2016 Author Posted March 2, 2016 yayyyyy, it worked. Its Testors clear red over everything but the white The gold starts right about the ft edge of the wheel opening and goes across the hood then blends just over the ft edge of the door. These outside pics really bleach out the colors. But it looks killer in person . Its on the shelf for a few days to air out. The I'll install the door decals, and one or maybe 2 more coats of Testors wet look clear . Then its final assembly.
Scale-Master Posted March 6, 2016 Posted March 6, 2016 The decals in the kit I have are for the restored version (sort of..) and don't match at all the graphics of the actual movie car.
dw1603 Posted March 6, 2016 Posted March 6, 2016 Really nice paint job. I went looking for pics of the car and I found the movie on YouTube, oh my goodness, I used to impatiently wait for each new Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello movie ( she was the main attraction, but the cars were a close second!) they didn't squander a lot of the budget on script writers did they? Oh well, it's still worth watching again for the period references (and Annette)
gtx6970 Posted March 7, 2016 Author Posted March 7, 2016 The decals in the kit I have are for the restored version (sort of..) and don't match at all the graphics of the actual movie car. Did the kit ever have the decals to replicate the movie car. ?
Scale-Master Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 I don't believe so. I think there has only been the one layout/style.In addition, only one side is correct with the kit supplied decals. When they painted the restored car they flipped the flame stencil over to do the passenger side and then lettered it. The decals show it as a mirror image so the passenger side decal shape is actually upside down. (I wish I found that detail out before I made new decals for mine...)
vintagercr Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 Looks good, don't you think so Steve? Why yes I do Dan
