why has everyone started using these? do folks not have the ability to put their thoughts into words? some are used as a passive aggressive punctuation and i understand why, but for the most part they're distracting to say the least.

I receive four cents royalty per emoticon used in posts throughout the known universe. I'm planning on taking the dough, buying mid-Ohio and moving it east.

Because smiley faces are friendlier than frowny faces? ;)

Smiling faces sometimes pretend to be your friend

well, i never bought into that, anyway. somebody is always trying to sell something.

there's another forum which has animated emoti, emiti, whatever-icons, and some threads consist of nothing but replies with them. for a group, here, which eschews "text - spelling", it seems odd to resort to these things.

I refuse to use the symbols or emoticons or any of that. If someone ever sent me a message using nothing but the faces, it would never get a response for these reasons, 1. I don't know what they mean, 2. That's not how you communicate in "written" conversations, 3. I don't have the memory left on my brains hard drive to learn what all that garbage means. I've gotten through life not knowing that stuff, I'm pretty sure I'll survive never knowing. I've been called stubborn, grouchy, and a few other choice words, your dam right. Get off my lawn!

Kinda sounds like the UNC staff member reminding all at the college that asking simple questions like 'Do you play golf' was racist and insensitive. Lets not get hyper sensitive over simple things.

Next time someone asks me if I play golf (I don't), I hope I remember to be suitably offended .  :DB););)

I use these on occasion. As the saying goes: "a picture is worth a thousand words". What really bothers me is the amount of spelling mistakes people make:angry:

Oh, you mean like using capital letters where they belong? The use of smiley faces, etc, allow the poster to insert expression into there post that is missing in a post is without them. Thus, preventing, hopefully, a miss interpretation of the poster's intent.
