m408 Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 Hate to post something of a serious nature, but I will. The April 29th get together had two goals for me. First, I wanted to meet face to face some guys, that through their help and encouragement, got me back into model car building. Mission accomplished. Met some great guys, got more "tips and tricks", and in general, had a great time. Second, get some local interest, maybe even to the point of starting a local club. In that effort, a couple of weeks prior to the event, I distributed flyers to at least a half dozen LHSs in the area. The only "non MCM forum" attendee was Randy from RC Hobbies who knew some of the guys already. Randy, in fact, had run copies of the flyer and had given them out to anyone purchasing model car type products at his store. The flyers proclaimed that on that date "some of Northern California's finest model car builders would be meeting. They would be bringing some of their latest works as well as works in progress". Everyone was invited. They could bring their stuff or just come and see good works with the opportunity to talk with the guys who built them. No takers. What's wrong? Intimidated to bring your builds and afraid of adverse comments? Heck, I wasn't. Brought two glue bombs. Even if intimidation was the thing, they could have left their stuff at home, and at least gotten some new ideas or help. I don't know gang. What's wrong with this picture?
Raul_Perez Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 Interesting point, Milt...and until you mentioned it in this post, I had forgotten that you had done all of that work ahead of time to try to get new builders to attend. Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you. Maybe Randy V from RC Hobbies might know, since he was one of several of the LHS' that handed out the fliers...you might ask him. Either way, please don't let the unwillingness of others to participate in Milt's NNL discourage you from doing it again. We all had a great time and will gladly do it again. Regards,

Regards, Oh no Raul, not at all discouraged about the MCM guys turn out, and will for sure do it again. Maybe late July or Augest. It's just that with the turn out that I saw at NNL West, I was sure that a bunch of folks would jump at the chance to spend some one on one time with you guys. I saw virtualy no pre event advertising for NNL West at the LHSs, in fact, I only learned about it on the forum. If the crowd at NNL had learned about it on the forum, they surely would have known about the get together since we had "talked" about it for weeks. I had even told several guys at my local watering hole about it. They had either built models in the past or had kids building them now. They didn't show either. Just can't figure it out.
jbwelda Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 well one problem might have been the sunday mid day part. worked for me but a lot of people have other things planned for sundays: church, mountains, yard work etc so its hard to get away in the middle of the day esp with families. also for me the distance: its a good hundred miles to san jose and i cant really do that that often. and just the flake factor: things sound good up until the time and then something else comes up. i wouldnt worry about it; the turnout was ok if you ask me, at least as good as a typical club meeting for our club in sacto and there was more on the table than usual for us as well. i just think it ebbs and flows and also you would get more (local) takers if it were in the evening after work on the weekday. also from a personal perspective, calling me one of the finest builders or whatever that was is really stretching it. i take it as a compliment but i would never consider myself anything like that. but i guess they wouldnt know who showed up if they didnt themselves!

I think that he was referring to Steve H, but then he ended up at the wrong restaurant...or...maybe that's where everyone that Milt is wondering about ended up! Hmmmmmmmmmm....maybe it was really Steve's NNL that everyone went to! Now I'm thoroughly confused... Steve, help us out here...

Hey Bill, I understand the distance thing. You came from Sacramento. Guys came from Tracy and Hollister, all long distances. Why not drive 15 minutes from around here? Again, I don't know. As for the "finest builders" thing, they say that "beauty is in the eyes of the beholder". I stand by my statement. In my mind, you guys are some of the best. Now the day and time thing. I knew that a bunch of you would have to travel long distances. Sunday afternoon seemed like a good time. Would any of you considered a 7:00 PM Thursday? I know that if I had to travel, I wouldn't. I was more interested in meeting you guys. If the locals wanted to take advantage of this opprotunity, fine. Anyhow Bill, thanks for the input, and again, thanks for the support.
